    Declare Independence From Gasoline With E85 July 3 2013 Roughly 300 000 Minnesotans have a unique freedom to celebrate this Independence Day the freedom of choice at the fuel pump As owners of flex fuel vehicles they can choose between traditional gasoline or cleaner burning E85 a made in America fuel that reduces tailpipe emissions and usually costs less than regular unleaded Flex fuel vehicles can also use mid level ethanol blend fuels such as E30 and E50 sold at more than 75 retail locations in Minnesota with blender pumps Minnesota motorists bought nearly 2 million gallons of E85 in May the last month with complete sales records of the fuel Minnesota has more E85 stations than any other state so finding a place to fill a flex fuel vehicle is relatively easy here said Robert Moffitt a spokesperson for the American Lung Association in Minnesota Vehicle emissions are the single largest source of air pollution in Minnesota so having access to a cleaner burning option like E85 is a very important step toward cleaner air more renewable fuels and greater energy independence To see a complete listing of all of the E85 and blender pumps in the state as

    Frick a recent graduate of Eagan High School is the first place winner of the 2013 Clean Air Choice Biodiesel Essay Scholarship Frick will receive a 1 000 scholarship as she continues her education at Concordia University Wisconsin in Mequon Wisconsin Frick was captain of both the girls cross country and the girls track team which took second place in the state finals and also sang in two choir ensembles at Eagan High School In her winning essay Frick recalls the difficulties she and her teammates experienced running near busy roadways with vehicle exhaust fumes thick in the air After a farmer friend informed her of the many uses of soybeans including biodiesel Frick wrote that she became a strong advocate of the home grown fuel Knowing how biodiesel fuel actually helps keep the truck s engine cleaner makes me wonder why all truck drivers are not using this cleaner fuel Frick says in her essay What additional information is needed before they make the switch to help keep the air I breathe a bit cleaner The 2nd place winner is Molly Lax a recent graduate of St Mary s High School in Sleepy Eye who will receive a 500

    of short term pollution in 235 metro areas nationwide That s a slight improvement over last year when the metro area was ranked 36th most polluted In a separate analysis of annual particle pollution in 220 metro areas the Twin Cities ranked 116th most polluted improving from 104th and Rochester Minn was ranked 140th most polluted slightly worse than last year s 142nd ranking No other Minnesota cities made the most polluted list The State of the Air Report looks at three years 2009 2011 of air quality data that was collected by the state and verified by the U S Environmental Protection Agency As in past years Minnesota s scores in the report are generally good but mixed Ramsey County s grade for short term particle pollution improved to a D up from an F grade in last year s report However Anoka and Washington counties which earned A grades last year for ozone pollution saw their grades slip to a B in the 2013 report Other grades for Minnesota counties remained unchanged from last year s report The message these reports are telling us is air pollution is a serious concern and that we need to continue efforts to reduce it said Robert Moffitt a spokesperson for the American Lung Association in Minnesota In the Twin Cities and statewide there has been real progress in reducing emissions new wind and solar power projects adding mass transit capabilities to the Twin Cities increased use of alternative fuels and advance vehicle technologies like E85 biodiesel and electric vehicles decreased use of coal for energy production and increased controls on emissions sources In many ways we are on the right path to cleaner air but there is still much more to be done and we must continue to implement changes in

    the availability of biodiesel in the region Previously biodiesel was only offered for seasonal blending Biodiesel in its pure form is regularly blended at temperatures above freezing so it was not offered for blending during winter months Through this joint effort the Sioux Falls biodiesel blending facility at Harms Oil will now incorporate a heated tank to allow for year round blending of the renewable fuel Biodiesel is a clean burning fuel produced from vegetable oils like soybean oil that blends easily with traditional petroleum diesel During winter months biodiesel blends have been difficult to find for diesel fleets and fuel retailers in South Dakota and southwest Minnesota due to the absence of heated product storage tanks Installation of this biodiesel loading infrastructure will significantly improve the availability of biodiesel in the region year round as well as efficiently serve an increasing demand for renewable fuels This facility will offer year round service that hasn t been available from a fuel distributor before plus they will be capable of servicing an underserved region of the country said Jim Willers a Beaver Creek Minnesota soybean farmer and chair of the Minnesota Biodiesel Council As a soybean producer I m excited that biodiesel will be more readily available to people who want it Biodiesel is America s first advanced biofuel and I m excited to have this domestic renewable fuel available year round in South Dakota This a great accomplishment for soybean farmers in the region as well as an excellent opportunity for biodiesel customers said Bob Metz soybean farmer from West Browns Valley S D Metz serves on the South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council and the National Biodiesel Board Harms Oil is pleased to be a part of this important addition to our region s fuel supply infrastructure making

    Return Home Middle River Teen Wins Statewide Essay Contest On Biodiesel September 4 2012 Morgan Dahl a 2012 graduate of Greenbush Middle River High School has been named as the 1st place finisher of the Reuben Youngerberg Memorial Biodiesel Essay Scholarship an annual scholarship open to all high school seniors in Minnesota Dahl the daughter of Donavon and Laura Dahl of Middle River Minnesota will receive a 1 600 check from the American Lung Association in Minnesota which recognizes biodiesel as a clean air choice fuel Dahl plans to attend the University of North Dakota and seek a degree in Early Childhood Education with a focus on Special Education I would like to thank the American Lung Association in Minnesota for giving me the opportunity to receive this scholarship and for selecting my essay as the first place winner Dahl said The scholarship will definitely help pay for my college expenses It truly means a lot to me The Minnesota Soybean Research and Promotion Council sponsors the Reuben Youngerberg Memorial Biodiesel Essay Scholarship with additional contributions from the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association MEG Corp National Biodiesel Board and the Renewable Energy Group The 2nd place winner is Laura Winters a
