    6 9 and 10 8 30 am 4 30 pm 500 Broad St Providence RI Community Room a few doors down from our office CMCRI s Mediation Training is a highly interactive 40 hour course that provides participants with the fundamentals of the facilitative mediation process Over the course of five classes we ll cover Conflict Theory and Styles Role of the Mediator Role of Confidentiality and Neutrality Building Trust and Setting the Stage Active Listening Identification of Positions and Interests Reframing and Summarizing Techniques Setting an Agenda Dealing with Impasse Agreement Writing Ethics and Standards of Practice Mediation with Represented Parties Unauthorized Practice of Law The training is focused on practical skill building with many group exercises and role plays and will be presented by CMCRI s Tonya Harris and Erin Wright our Executive Director and Program Director respectively who have experience teaching mediation skills to community members colleges universities and high school students While this course is open to anyone it fulfills the Rhode Island statute training requirement for mediators This course is also approved as CLE CEU credit for Rhode Island attorneys and social workers It is designed to qualify for 40 RI MCLE credits Attorneys seeking

    to enable a full exploration of issues in dispute and to reach a complete and satisfactory resolution Confidentiality is governed by law in Rhode Island General Laws 9 19 44 as follows Mediator confidentiality in mediation proceedings a All memoranda and other work product including files reports interviews case summaries and notes prepared by a mediator shall be confidential and not subject to disclosure in any subsequent judicial or administrative proceeding involving any of the parties to any mediation in which the materials are generated nor shall a mediator be compelled to disclose in any subsequent judicial or administrative proceeding any communication made to him or her in the course of or relating to the subject matter of any mediation by a participant in the mediation process For the purposes of this section mediation shall mean a process in which an impartial third party who is a qualified mediator who lacks authority to impose a solution helps participants reach their own agreement for resolving a dispute whether or not a judicial action has been filed and a mediator shall mean an impartial person who enters into a written agreement with the parties to assist them in resolving their dispute and
