    in maternal fetal medicine This is a comprehensive fellowship program in which trainees will be exposed to the breadth and depth of this subspecialty as the program at Columbia University has specialists in all aspects of maternal fetal medicine including maternal complications of pregnancy obstetric complications fetal diagnosis and therapy genetics and clinical basic science and translational research With three fellows per year the MFM program at Columbia University is one of the largest in the country The program is three years in duration and consists of 18 months of clinical work 15 months of research and 3 months of elective time The clinical rotations vary and in the first year include an inpatient rotation comprised of labor and delivery and the antepartum service ultrasound prenatal diagnosis and outpatient high risk clinics The second year includes six months of clinical work with rotations in genetics advanced clinical during which time the fellow leads the Accreta Team and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit The other six months are research months In the third year there are three months of non prescribed elective time Many fellows use this time to complete their research but some have chosen to expand their training in areas such as fetal echocardiogram or procedures Fellows have a breadth of opportunities that can be focused to individual interests including genetics infectious disease critical care biostatistics and epidemiology and fetal echocardiogram Our fetal therapy program continues to expand and fellows have exposure to advanced procedures such as radiofrequency ablation or laser coagulation for complication monochorionic diamniotic twin gestations Additionally our fellows are all trained in amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling Finally combined training programs in MFM Genetics or MFM Critical Care are possible if desired In order to assist with fellow research our department has a team of biostatistician epidemiologists that assist with study design and analysis Our weekly divisional research meetings enable fellows to get guidance from internationally renowned researchers on a regular basis Fellows are able to perform clinical translational or basic science research and publish their work in top tier journals within our field With the world class Columbia Mailman School of Public Health some of our fellows have chosen do additional coursework in the areas of epidemiology or biostatistics Finally we are located in one of the largest most diverse cities in the world which offers fellows in a training a wide range of cultural activities and experiences Upon completion of fellowship our graduates have superb clinical and research skills and are prepared for a variety of career options I hope you will explore our online information and contact me with any questions Warm regards Cynthia Gyamfi Bannerman MD MSc Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at CUMC Director Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Quick Links Make an Appointment To make an appointment call 1 855 75 OBGYN Coming soon schedule your appointment online Find a Doctor By Doctor Name or By Specialty Select Specialty Cancer Care Family
