  • Nutrition Questions from the CRI Novice Boys » Community Rowing, Inc.
carbohydrates throughout the day to load up our muscle glycogen If a teen athlete feels like they must have a sugar product I would recommend that food be consumed 30 minutes or less before a practice and only if that session is to last longer than 2 hours 2 How much protein do I really need This depends on your size weight composition goals and other factors Generally rowers train as endurance athletes and therefore need somewhere between 1 2 1 6 g kg of body weight for protein For a 170 kid this would be 90 120 g of protein Can you eat a big protein meal and then be set for the day No Protein should be spread out in 20 30g meals or snacks throughout the day So this athlete should plan for at least 3 meals with 30 g of protein or 5 smaller snacks with at least 20 g of protein each day 3 Are protein bars good This is one of my favorite questions I think I get asked this daily For those of you with a few minutes of time I d like to refer you to this fabulous New York Times video on the subject of protein bars http www nytimes com video dining 100000002674209 whats in it protein bars html My rule of thumb is protein bars are for difficult situations not daily meal planning You can get protein from foods that are packable nuts seeds chickpeas lentils beans eggs and edamame without the added sugar and high calorie load This will in turn help create a more balanced snack and overall diet Kelsea Gusk is the Registered Dietitian at Community Rowing Inc She is working to develop nutrition educational tools for all the athletes and programs at CRI She can

rowers typically have the exercise portion of the formula under control the food portion is just as important to success Here are three ideas of steps you can take this month to improve your nutrition know how 1 Find three new quick easy dinner meals that you love Make these dinners so routine that you can cook them without directions and pick up the ingredients you need without a list This prepares you for summer sessions when you row until dark and desperately need to get to bed in order to wake up at 5 am and do it again If you practice dinner prep now it will be as routine as the pick drill My favorite go to dinner One pot vegetable quinoa Cook Quinoa as directed 10 minutes before it s complete add a frozen bag of vegetables Shred cheese on top Eat 2 Make water a habit When the weather warms up it is easy to forget to add in extra water The result is a massive headache that stalls an afternoon practice If you take the time in March to improve your water habits this can be avoided Some ideas make a water schedule for three weeks on your desk at work bring a fancy water bottle with you to school or bookend meals and snacks with a glass of water to increase intake 3 Stock up on essential pantry items What if you could just buy fresh fruits and vegetables all summer and skip long shopping trips You can if you prepare now Buy in bulk all the whole grains that you love Grab extra cans of beans Pack the freezer with frozen vegetables Assess your spice rack and oil collection A full pantry is many meals waiting to happen saving much desired warm weather
