    to Nicaragua on behalf of Comunidad Connect s Cultural Connections program JON THOMPSON Co Founder Board Chair Born and raised in Atlanta GA Jon graduated from Centre College in Danville KY in 1997 with a B A in History He first visited Nicaragua in 1998 and returned every year thereafter In 2002 Jon obtained his Masters of Social Work with a concentration in Community Development from Georgia State University Jon and his Nicaraguan wife moved to live in San Juan del Sur full time in 2005 where Jon met Roman Yavich and founded Comunidad Connect in 2006 After working as volunteer Executive Director for 5 years Jon moved on to serve as Board President ROMAN YAVICH Co Founde r Executive Director After completing studies in business and economics at the Univ of Colorado in 2006 Roman received the Fulbright Grant to research the impact of tourism on the community economy and environment in Nicaragua He spent a year in San Juan del Sur and together with Jon Thompson founded Comunidad Connect After another year in Nicaragua during which the organization became firmly planted in the community Roman has remained active on the Board of Directors and currently serves as the treasurer He is originally from Ukraine and holds a Masters in Public Administration from Syracuse University and a Masters in Environmental Science from SUNY ESF SOCIEDAD CIVIL COMUNIDAD CONNECT STAFF DR ALFREDO ALANIZ Los Robles Clinic Physician Doctor Alaníz received a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the UNAM in Leon in 1996 The following year he began working with the Health Ministry as the Sub director of the Primary Hospital in Wiwili Jinotega For the next five years he worked with the NGO Wisconsin helping the non profit to provide health for women and children in rural communities In 2003 he accepted a position in Managua with the non profit HOPE where he remained until 2009 working as a supervisor and manager In 2010 Dr Alaníz changed his focus to nutrition accepting a position with CARE Nicaragua as a specialist in evaluation and monitoring He has also worked with Global Brigades and the Catholic Church of Nicaragua and directed the primary hospital in WIwili Ocotal In 2014 Dr Alaníz joined the Comunidad Connect team as the physician of Los Robles clinic During the weekends Dr Alaníz teaches in several universities in Jinotega His courses include nursing psychology and pharmacy NERYS BLANDON Community Outreach and Education Coordinator Nerys is a resident of Los Robles the community of 2 000 subsistence coffee farmers in the mountains of northern Nicaragua Her mother was the founding member of the local health volunteers who have been the heart and soul of Comunidad Connect s work in Los Robles over the last 4 years Nerys has followed her mother s lead and has been instrumental in the implementation of Nica Agua which now provides clean drinking water to 90 of Los Robles Today Nerys is currently the Community Outreach Coordinator for NCHC in charge of

    licensing is a major step for the initiative which combines rural healthcare and outreach with international public health research With this official recognition by the municipality of Jinotega NCHC is able to continue to work closely with the National Ministry of Health to receive a permanent operations license granting it access to more significant resources and training opportunities The collaboration between Comunidad Connect and the Ministry of Health will further the ability of NCHC to improve access to healthcare and education in Los Robles and surrounding communities Since the clinic s opening at the beginning of 2015 Comunidad Connect staff including Dariel Potoy Program Manager Dr Alfredo Alaniz Physician and Nerys Blandon Community Outreach and Education Coordinator have met repeatedly with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health to secure the proper licensing and certification During this probationary period the clinic provided a high level of patient care to over 1500 patients Additionally Comunidad Connect has provided more than 150 hours of high quality preventative health education in Los Robles and has facilitated several dozen public health projects with the support of local and foreign volunteers We are constantly increasing the formality of our operation with the Nicaraguan Health Ministry SILAIS regional health authority and the municipal government of Jinotega said Comunidad Connect founder and NCHC Program Director Jon Thompson Nicaragua Community Health Connection NCHC is a joint effort led by Comunidad Connect and Social Enterprise at Goizueta that cultivates resources to counteract poverty and provide healthcare in isolated communities by investing in social capital and local leadership NCHC is a collaborative network supported by a growing list of nonprofits and academic institutions including HOI the National University of Nicaragua University of Calgary Georgia State University Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College University of Oregon and Kennesaw State University To learn more visit http
