  • Our Anti-Trafficking Work | Covenant House PA
    15 year old girl a ninth grader ran away from home and was looking for a place to stay She had nowhere else to go and the trafficker a 46 year old man offered her a ride to his house For the next month he threatened to kill her and her family if she didn t sell her body on the street over and over and over again night after night He made her sleep on a crate in the corner of her room until she finally and fortunately escaped Human traffickers target runaway and homeless youth who are particularly vulnerable because they are disconnected from the protection of family and the safety of home In a study of runaway and homeless youth conducted by Covenant House in New York of the youth who had been involved in commercial sexual activity almost half 48 said that they found themselves in that position because they did not have a place to stay In the summer of 2014 six years after that 15 year old young woman endured unimaginable trauma another 15 year old girl also a ninth grader also ran away from home She found herself on the street walking through the night for two days straight because she had nowhere to go An older man approached her on the morning of the second day looked her up and down and said You need to go to Covenant House He gave her directions she came to us and we offered her a safe place to stay That s how we combat trafficking at Covenant House Pennsylvania we prevent it in the first place by providing runaway and homeless youth with a place to stay that s safe from the pimps and predators of the street And we also educate advocate and

  • Street Outreach | Covenant House PA
    of street outreach is building trust and increasing awareness The outreach team spends 4 to 5 days each week travelling by van on foot or public transit throughout Philadelphia engaging any and all young people they encounter The main goal of each contact is to establish a relationship identify any needs the individual may have and empower them to refer someone else who needs help If a youth shares something they need help with the team will help them access the services they need whether it is at Covenant House or another agency Because the aim of street outreach is to meet clients where they are the outreach van is always stocked with food drinks hygiene products blankets or sleeping bags clothing and underwear and hats and gloves in order to meet any immediate need a youth might have In addition to being First Aid and CPR certified the outreach team is very knowledgeable about other service providers throughout the region that can assist our youth and even those beyond our age range Prevention and Community Education Our Street Outreach team routinely presents to schools community groups and other organizations to raise awareness about youth homelessness and the services that Covenant House can offer All too often youth who attend these presentations approach our street outreach team afterward and ask for materials or indicate that they have a friend who is homeless These presentations are an effective way to spread the word about our services and to connect with youth who need our help Philadelphia Anti Trafficking Coalition The outreach team represents Covenant House as the chair of the Philadelphia Anti Trafficking Coalition The coalition is an affiliation of social service government and law enforcement agencies dedicated to combating the issue of human trafficking in the Philadelphia area PATC was

    Support Sleep Out Grassroots Fundraising Home Team Associate Board Night of Broadway Stars Employment Volunteer and Intern Health Services CHOP Connections Clinic 215 302 7516 As you can imagine life on the street can be very physically harmful to young people and because our youth move around so much it is difficult for them to access medical care To meet this need we operate an on site clinic in collaboration with The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia CHOP Our clinic which is led by Dr Kenneth R Ginsburg MD MSEd a nationally recognized expert in serving adolescents practices social adolescent medicine medicine with special attention to prevention and the recognition that social context and stressors impact both physical and emotional health While the clinic serves all of the physical health needs of patients including examination treatment and referral and ongoing management of immediate and chronic medical conditions the clinic also adds another dimension to healthcare focusing on stress and trauma as the underlying force that drives most behaviors that risk good health Dr Ginsburg developed the teen centered method which helps youth to generate prioritize and explain their own proposed solutions to social problems and at risk behaviors Our clinic
