    and includes a number of sports fields and halls swimming pools and other sport facilities It also accommodates Jordan s largest sports stadium the Amman International Stadium which covers an area of 8000 sq m The complex in addition includes conference halls and spaces for public events the most important of which is the Culture Palace which is located in its northeastern part A forest which covers one third its total area is located in its central part Walking and jogging tracks have been installed in it The addition of new buildings to the site over the years unfortunately has destroyed some of its forested areas Access to the sports facilities in the complex is membership based but a number of its spaces in the central forest area are open to the public Due to the low number of open public spaces in Amman and although most of the spaces in the complex are designed to accommodate sports related activities a high number of visitors use the complex for picnicking which creates a major threat to the natural area as a result of vandalism and littering Additional information on al Hussein Youth City may be found at http bit ly 1WMF5gm We would like to thank Husni Ayesh who is a fifth year architecture student at the German Jordanian University for providing us with the name of the architectural office that designed this complex مدينة الحسين للشباب المدينة الرياضية تقع مدينة الحسين للشباب المعروفة أيضا بالمدينة الرياضي ة في الجزء الشمالي الشرقي من عم ان على إمتداد شارع الملكة رانيا وكان العمل عليها قد بدأ في عام 1964 لتكون أول مدينة رياضية في الأردن وبالإضافة إلى الأحداث الرياضية فقد استضافت عددا من الأحداث الثقافي ة والسياسي ة الهامة تغط ي مدينة الحسين للشباب مساحة قدرها حوالي 90 هكتارا وتشتمل على

    Amman Publications Resources Amman s Urban and Green Lungs The Amman Citadel The Amman Citadel The Amman Citadel is one of the city s most significant historical sites The L shaped site covers an area of 11 6 hectares It is located on a hill that overlooks Amman s downtown area along King Ali bin al Hussein Street It is a very rich archaeological site that includes monuments such as the second century Temple of Hercules and the eighth century Umayyad Palace The site also includes an archaeological museum that was established during the 1950s Since the Amman Citadel is located within Amman s older and denser districts it significantly stands out as the only large scale open space in the area Besides being an important tourist attraction the open space also is a place for leisure and relaxation In addition it currently hosts public and private events and festivals as well as musical concerts These activities however have come under criticism as they can inflict harm on the site s historical remains and are a source of disturbance for local residents because of the high levels of noise and traffic they generate Additional information on the Amman Citadel may be found at http bit ly 1k1mSNY http bit ly 1WMEpHG http bit ly 1hqh6DL http bit ly 1VEtHk3 جبل القلعة يعتبر جبل القلعة من أهم المواقع التاريخية في مدينة عم ان ويغطي الموقع الذي يأخذ شكل L مساحة 11 6 هكتارا ويقع على سفح تلة تطل على منطقة وسط المدينة تمتد على طول شارع الملك على بن الحسين وهو موقع أثري غني يحتوي على معالم مهمة تتضمن معبد هرقل الذي يعود إلى القرن الثاني الميلادي والقصر الأموي الذي يعود إلى القرن الثامن الميلادي كما يحتوي الموقع على متحف أثري أنشأ في الخمسينات من القرن الماضي وبما أن جبل القلعة

    King Abdullah II Street It was established in 2005 as Amman s largest public park It covers an area of 62 hectares and includes recreational spaces playgrounds cultural exhibitions sports facilities and green spaces The King Hussein Mosque the Royal Automobile Museum and the Children s Museum are also located in the park The park features green spaces that cover almost 28 hectares but a considerable part of park area consists of built up and hardscaped areas that include terraces pathways and piazzas The park is located within an increasingly built up area of the city that houses commercial office medical and residential uses The park is also a venue for public activities including cultural festivals and sports events A number of the park s spaces and elements have been vandalized Also due to lack of maintenance and upkeep which unfortunately is the case with many of Amman s public spaces the park suffers from neglect and littering Additional information on the King Hussein Park may be found at http bit ly 1VDhn9h http bit ly 1jNGhlp http bit ly 1OXFhI0 متنزه الملك حسين يقع متنزه الملك حسين في منطقة دابوق في عم ان بمحاذاة شارع الملك عبد الله الثاني

  • The Royal Court Compound » CSBE
    Royal Court Compound also known as the Raghdan Royal Palaces was established in the early 1920s The site which was originally a military camp is located in the older part of Amman on top of a 170 hectare hill overlooking the city s downtown area The site is also close to the Hijaz Railway Station and Amman s Marka Airport It is bordered by al Urdun Jordan Street from the west and by al Istiqlal Independence Street from the north The compound contains a number of royal palaces as well as the Royal Cemetery Although it was originally established as a residential complex for Jordan s Royal Family it has evolved to also accommodate royal offices and to host ceremonial events Although the compound is not open to the public it nonetheless has rich historical cultural and environmental significances The site housed many of Jordan s important political economic and cultural events King Abdullah I also regularly opened Raghdan Palace for public mourning upon the death of important Jordanian figures In addition it hosted cultural gatherings for Arab writers and poets Moreover the compound which contains a considerable amount of native vegetation and forests as well as designed open green spaces is significant as a natural space and stands out as a green lung among the surrounding dense urban area Additional information on the Royal Court Compound may be found at http bit ly 1PqNNyI قصور رغدان الملكية بني قصر رغدان في أوائل العشرينات من القرن الماضي ويقع موقع القصر الذي كان في الأصل معسكرا للجيش على سفح تلة تطل على منطقة وسط المدينة ويغطي مساحة 170 هكتارا في واحدة من أكثر مناطق عم ان قدما والموقع قريب أيضا من مطار ماركا وسكة حديد الحجاز ويحده شارع الأردن من الغرب وشارع الإستقلال من الشمال يحتوي الموقع على عدد من القصور

    located in al Jubayha area in the northern part of Amman along Queen Rania Street It was established in 1962 and is Jordan s oldest university The university campus which now covers an area of 120 hectares has grown since its establishment and has spread to accommodate new buildings and facilities The area surrounding the campus has also undergone intense development to now house a large number of residential commercial academic and medical buildings The university campus stands out among the surrounding urban area as a green lung since it includes a considerable amount of greenery and accommodates a large number of plant species A natural forest covers about 6 of the total area of the campus Moreover another area that takes up approximately 6 of the campus consists of gardens and green areas The continuous expansion of the university however is eating up an increasing amount of the site s open and green areas Additional information on the University of Jordan campus may be found at http bit ly 1LjaRZX http bit ly 1Ol9ZuP http bit ly 1VDgTzY حرم الجامعة الأردنية تحتل الجامعة الأردنية مساحة 120 هكتارا في منطقة الجبيهة شمال عم ان بمحاذاة شارع الملكة رانيا والجامعة الأردنية
