    Jordan Training Technology Group He also was the Chief of Party of the USAID funded Jordan Economic Development Program Additionally Mr Al Qasem is a board member of several NGOs and is currently the Chairman of the Center for the Study of the Built Environment CSBE The course was carried out in association with ABCD and Darat al Funun the Khalid Shoman Foundation Also a diary was written for the course and placed on the CSBE website The third course that CSBE organized is Introduction to Landscape Architecture Concepts and Applications It was taught by landscape architect and CSBE Associate Director Lara Zureikat The course also was organized in association with the A E Business Council View information on CSBE s courses and workshops Diwan al Mimar The CSBE architectural forum Diwan al Mimar is a discussion group that aims at exploring the issues and challenges affecting the built environment in Jordan the Arab world and beyond in an in depth and constructive manner The Diwan addresses topics including architecture urban planning construction technologies landscape architecture and conservation of heritage sites As a discussion forum the Diwan aims at exploring and developing issues rather than presenting finished products CSBE continued in 2012 the 2011 2012 Diwan season which is devoted to the topic of urban management in Jordan The Diwan invited one speaker at the end of 2011 Omar Maani the former mayor of the Greater Amman Municipality During 2012 the Diwan invited three speakers Walid Al Masri the former mayor of the Greater Irbid Municipality Mohammad Balqar the former Commissioner for Land Infrastructure and Services at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority ASEZA and Omar Razzaz the former director of the Social Security Corporation The Diwan held additional sessions to assess and summarize the contents of the four previous sessions In addition the Diwan held a screening of the documentary film urbanized which deals with contemporary urban developments affecting cities around the world This season of the Diwan will continue during 2013 For 2013 a public survey about urban management will be developed as well as a summary paper about the four sessions with the guest speakers The results of the survey the summary paper as well as the reports on each of the sessions with guest speakers will be made available to the public through the CSBE website One public event or more also will be organized to present the findings of this season of the Diwan to the general public Support for this season of the Diwan has been provided by National Paints the Arab Technical Group ATG Daiken and the members of the Diwan The Diwan sessions have been hosted at Yaghmour Architects and at Darat al Funun the Khalid Shoman Foundation View information on Diwan al Mimar CSBE Facebook page CSBE initiated in 2011 a Facebook page that aims at documenting and disseminating CSBE s activities and publications but also aims at bringing attention to information available online that addresses the built environment with an

    2011 The course was led by three prominent Jordanian architects Bilal Hammad Sahel Al Hiyari and Hani Imam Hussaini All have made creative and important contributions to developing detailing solutions that have built upon and expanded the skills and technical competencies found in Jordan s construction industry The course was organized in partnership with the Jordanian Architecture Engineering A E Business Council a non profit membership association whose members consists of a number of Jordan s leading architectural and engineering firms CSBE is in the process of planning a number of additional courses on subjects relating to architecture urbanism and landscape architecture for 2012 View information on the Architectural Detailing Course Diwan al Mimar The CSBE architectural forum Diwan al Mimar is a discussion group that aims at exploring the issues and challenges affecting the built environment in Jordan the Arab world and beyond in an in depth and constructive manner The Diwan addresses topics including architecture urban planning construction technologies landscape architecture and conservation of heritage sites As a discussion forum the Diwan aims at exploring and developing issues rather than presenting finished products Diwan al Mimar was established in 2000 and continued until 2008 No Diwan activities were carried out during 2009 and 2010 but the Diwan was reactivated in 2011 For the 2011 2012 season the Diwan is following a different approach for organizing its meetings It will primarily devote the season to a single subject that of urban management in Jordan The Diwan members will produce a position paper on the subject by the end of the season All efforts will be made to develop an intensive dialogue with the public and with relevant decision makers regarding the content of this paper Support for this season of Diwan al Mimar has been provided by National Paints the Arab Technical Group ATG Daiken and members of Diwan al Mimar The Diwan al Mimar sessions have been hosted at Yaghmour Architects and by Darat al Funun the Khalid Shoman Foundation View information on Diwan al Mimar CSBE Facebook page CSBE initiated in 2011 a Facebook page that aims at documenting and disseminating CSBE s activities and publications but also aims at bringing attention to articles and films that are available online and that deal with the built environment with an emphasis on issues relating to public transportation pedestrian access and energy efficiency The Facebook page is intended to strengthen CSBE s online presence View the CSBE Facebook page Public spaces project CSBE hosted three architecture student interns from the Jordan University of Science and Technology JUST in the summer of 2011 The interns Saja Hazaimeh Ruba Abu Al Haija a and Dana Elfar studied three public spaces in Amman Wakalat Street Cultural Avenue and Rainbow Street under the supervision of CSBE staff The intensive study addressed issues relating to design maintenance and upkeep and social interaction The interns have made a number of presentations on the project and CSBE will be writing a detailed report on their work

    for Science and Technology JUST CSBE also held a half day training seminar on water wise landscaping at the Greater Amman Municipality Thirty employees from the Gardens Department participated In addition CSBE assisted a private nursery in the design of a model water wise plant display at its Amman showroom Moreover CSBE launched the Abu Alanda Apartments Competition for the design of a water and energy efficient low cost apartment building The competition was organized in collaboration with the Jordan Engineers association JEA and the Housing and Urban Development Corporation HUDC A jury consisting of four Jordanian architects and a faculty member from the University of Arizona assessed the competition entries and selected three winners The winning entries and the jury report are available on the CSBE web site The Omrania CSBE Student Award for Excellence in Architectural Design In 2008 CSBE initiated an award for Jordanian architectural graduation projects in conjunction with the regional architectural and engineering firm Omrania and Associates In 2009 the Award s reach was expanded to include graduation projects from universities throughout the Arab world For the 2010 cycle 82 entries were received from nine Arab countries An independent three member jury assessed the submitted projects and selected the winning entries The Aga Khan Award for Architecture kindly supported the participation of one of the jury members The jury awarded five equal prizes of 2 000 USD each to entries from Jordan Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates An Award ceremony for the 2010 cycle was held at the Art Centre in Manama Bahrain The ceremony was accompanied by an exhibition of the winning entries for this and the past cycles as well as a selection of projects submitted for the current cycle Similar exhibitions have been planned for 2011 at the Jordan University of Science and Technology in Irbid the American University of Beirut the Academie Lebanaise des Beaux Arts and the American University of Sharjah The Award aims at holding an event celebrating the accomplishments of the winning students at their universities Detailed information on the three cycles of the Award is available on the CSBE web site Graywater Book CSBE was supported by the Canadian International Development and Research Centre IDRC to publish a book based on a workshop that CSBE and IDRC organized in Aqaba in 2007 on graywater use During 2009 the papers were received and edited and additional book chapters were developed The final manuscript was accepted by the United Kingdom based publishers Practical Action Publishing and was published in 2010 The book is co edited by CSBE director Stephen McIlwaine and Mark Redwood of IDRC A digital copy of the book may be accessed through the CSBE web site Jabal Qala a Park Design Project CSBE was invited by the community based social activism group Hamzet Wasel to assist with developing a children s park in the Jabal Qala a neighborhood This involved a series of workshops and charrettes with the neighborhood children in order to come up

    In this context CSBE developed a Best Management Practice BMP guide in both Arabic and English on water efficiency for public parks In conjunction with experts from the University of Arizona in Tucson CSBE developed a course module on water conserving landscapes for an architecture course at the German Jordanian University and also for an agricultural engineering course at the University of Jordan Finally under this contract initial preparations were made for an architectural design competition for an affordable water and energy efficient apartment building in Amman which will be implemented in 2010 Energy Conserving Buildings CSBE continued to provide information dissemination assistance for the energy efficient demonstration house constructed in Aqaba as part of the European Union funded MED ENEC program The house was completed in 2009 and an opening ceremony was held in June under the patronage of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority ASEZA CSBE produced the educational display material for the opening ceremony and for general distribution Leveraging off this project CSBE also developed and designed a brochure on approaches to realizing higher levels of energy sustainability in buildings A print version of the brochure has been distributed widely and a digital version is available on the CSBE website in English and in Arabic This contract came to an end in 2009 but the house is now open for viewing in Aqaba as a demonstration house Graywater Book CSBE was supported by the Canadian International Development and Research Centre IDRC to publish a book based on a workshop that CSBE and IDRC organized in Aqaba in 2007 on graywater reuse During 2009 the papers were received and edited and other chapters of the book were developed The final manuscript was accepted by the United Kingdom based publishers Practical Action Publishing and is due to be printed and published early in 2010 The book is co edited by CSBE director Stephen McIlwaine and Mark Redwood of IDRC This project closed at the end of 2009 The Omrania CSBE Student Award for Excellence in Architectural Design In 2008 CSBE initiated an award for Jordanian architectural graduation projects in conjunction with the regional architectural and engineering firm Omrania and Associates In 2009 the Award s reach was expanded to include graduation projects from universities throughout the Arab world Sixty six entries were received from ten countries An independent three member jury assessed the submitted projects and selected the winning entries which were announced at the Award ceremony and exhibition held at the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts in October 2009 The Aga Khan Award for Architecture kindly supported the participation of one of the jury members The jury awarded three prizes to entries from Jordan Kuwait and Lebanon and two honorable mentions to entries from the United Arab Emirates and Jordan The Award has received considerable coverage in a variety of online and print publications Extensive documentation of the Award is available on the CSBE web site Children s Museum Botanic Garden During 2009 CSBE completed designs for

    assistance in connection with the energy efficient demonstration house being constructed in Aqaba as part of the European Union funded MED ENEC program CSBE had been involved in the conception design and construction of the house During 2008 CSBE focused on producing educational and awareness raising material for the house and on presenting the building concept to a wider audience through workshops and conferences We produced a brochure to introduce the project and its technologies published several articles in local newspapers and magazines and hosted a one day tour of the project for interested parties Construction on the house was begun in 2007 with support from the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority ASEZA and it is scheduled for completion in 2009 Graywater Book CSBE organized in Aqaba in 2007 a regional experts meeting on graywater reuse in association with the Canadian International Development and Research Centre IDRC In 2008 we began to follow up with the presenters at the meeting to develop their papers into chapters suitable for publication in a book Significant follow up and editing on the draft chapters was carried out and the book is due to be published in early 2010 by the British publisher Practical Action Publishing Children s Museum Botanic Garden CSBE was commissioned to prepare designs for an educational botanic garden at the Children s Museum in the King Hussein Park in Amman A concept design was submitted to the museum for approval Courses for the Jordanian A E Building Council CSBE developed and implemented two training courses for the Jordanian A E Building Council The first was on sustainable design led by Hans Rosenlund of the Department of Architecture and Built Design at Lund University of Sweden and the second was on proposal writing led by Natheer Abu Obeid of the Department of Architecture at the Jordan University of Science and Technology Because of high demand the latter course was given twice Diwan al Mimar The Diwan al Mimar series the architectural forum that CSBE initiated in 2000 continued in 2008 with presentations by Khaled Burgan of the Greater Amman Municipality and Ihab Ammarin of the Ministry of Tourism on tourism planning in Amman the renown Jordanian novelist Samiha Khrais on Amman through the eyes of a novelist Jonathan Lane of Boston based ICON Architecture on heritage resources and John Van Nostrand of Toronto based Planning Alliance on the Greater Amman Master Plan Public Lecture Series CSBE held two public lectures in 2008 The first was by Lebanese architect and artist Nadim Karam who presented a number of his urban public art works The second was by Egyptian architect and conservator Tariq al Murri of the Historic Cairo Conservation Project who gave a presentation on the conservation of historic monuments in Cairo Public Spaces Research Project CSBE continued its project of mapping how public spaces in Amman are used and presented its findings to the Mayor of Amman During 2008 our Associate Director Lara Zureikat was awarded a six month research fellowship

    and holding design charettes with the community The purpose was to provide the Mayor with advice on some positive intervention in the area and to identify how both GAM and local communities can work better together This work was completed in 2007 and a report as well as some design ideas were submitted The project was contracted under the Greater Amman Master Plan agreement with the consulting firm Bearing Point Energy Conserving Buildings European Union MED ENEC CSBE in cooperation with Tareq Emteireh of Sweden s Lund University was awarded a grant by the European Union funded MED ENEC program to monitor and disseminate information about an energy efficient demonstration house under construction in Aqaba CSBE s role involves producing educational and awareness raising material and presenting the building concept in various workshops and conferences Construction got underway during 2007 and is scheduled for completion in 2009 Graywater Experts Meeting Canadian International Development and Research Centre CSBE was approached by the Canadian International Development and Research Centre IDRC to organize a regional Experts Meeting on graywater use Preparations were completed during 2006 and the meeting was held in Aqaba in February 2007 under the patronage of the Ministry of Water and Irrigation It was opened by the Ministry s Secretary General Khaldoun Khashman and featured a number of Jordanian organizations as well as a keynote speech by Munther Haddadin former Minister of Water and Irrigation The conference was a success with around 35 experts attending and presenting IDRC also commissioned CSBE to compile and edit the proceedings and to publish them in a book devoted to the topic Museum With No Frontiers MWNF During 2007 CSBE continued with the commission from the Brussels based Museum With No Frontiers to prepare and upload articles and data elements relating to Islamic art and architecture in the Mediterranean region to their Discover Islamic Art online exhibition see www discoverislamicart org Diwan al Mimar The Diwan al Mimar series the architectural forum that CSBE initiated in 2000 in collaboration with Darat al Funun continued in 2007 with presentations by John Van Nostrand managing partner of the Toronto based firm Planning Alliance who spoke about progress on the Amman Master Plan especially relating to the plan s High Density Mixed Use areas Khaled Shamout United States based transportation specialist on issues in the management of transportation congestion and public transit in urban areas Wael Samhouri Syrian architect and educator on his work and Christa Reicher head of the Department of Urban Design and Land Use Planning in the Faculty of Spatial Planning at the University of Dortmund on German experience in rehabilitating public spaces Co publishing a Monograph of Essays on the Diwan al Mimar Presentations and CSBE Public Lectures The new CSBE publication Exploring the Built Environment was finalized printed and published during 2007 in association with Darat al Funun The Khalid Shoman Foundation A launch ceremony was held in November at Darat al Funun at which Robert Saliba professor of architecture at the

    Canadian International Development and Research Centre IDRC CSBE in association with IDRC will be publishing a book that includes the papers presented at the meeting Museum With No Frontiers MWNF CSBE was commissioned by the Brussels based Museum With No Frontiers to prepare and upload a number of articles and data elements relating to Islamic art and architecture in the Mediterranean region to their Discover Islamic Art online exhibition see www discoverislamicart org Aga Khan Award for Architecture Publication on Architectural Journalism and Criticism The Aga Khan Award for Architecture commissioned CSBE to edit the proceedings of the international seminar on architectural criticism and journalism it had organized in Kuwait in December 2005 The monograph on the proceedings was published at the end of 2006 see Mohammad al Asad with Majd Musa Architectural Criticism and Journalism Global Perspectives Turin Umberto Allemandi 2006 Study for Identifying and Developing Priority Industrial Areas in Jordan CSBE completed a study commissioned by EJADA Euro Jordanian Action for the Development of the Enterprise for the Jordan Agency for Enterprise and Investment Development JAED The outcome of this study was a detailed and comprehensive industrial map of Jordan which will support the design of investment strategies for the industrial sector in the country Guidelines for Children s Parks and Play Environments The Greater Amman Municipality commissioned Lara Zureikat the manager of the CSBE Water Conserving Landscapes project to develop guidelines for the development of children s parks and play areas in Amman Lara carried out the study in association with CSBE staff members The guidelines address issues including safety as well as fostering the child s physical social intellectual and emotional growth Diwan al Mimar The Diwan al Mimar series the architectural forum that CSBE had initiated in 2000 continued in 2006 with presentations by Nasser Rabbat the Aga Khan Professor of Islamic Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States Omar Maani Mayor of the Greater Amman Municipality Walid al Masri Mayor of the Greater Irbid Municipality Samer Akkach Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Adelaide in Australia and Lara Zureikat landscape architect and Director of the CSBE Water Conserving Landscapes Project Co publishing a Monograph of Essays on the Diwan al Mimar Presentations and CSBE Public Lectures CSBE is cooperating with Darat al Funun The Khalid Shoman Foundation on publishing a monograph that will feature the twelve essays that CSBE has published on its web site documenting Diwan al Mimar sessions and the public lectures that CSBE had co sponsored CSBE will cover all editing costs for the monograph through its own resources and Darat al Funun will cover the design and printing costs Work on the monograph was initiated in 2006 and it is expected to come out during the summer of 2007 This will be CSBE s third monograph publication The first was the 2004 Arabic language Water Conserving Gardens A User s Manual and the second was the 2005 English language Sahel Al Hiyari Architecture Exploring

    Special Economic Zone Authority ASEZA CSBE carried out a study for ASEZA in association with the Jordanian consulting firm EcoConsult that dealt with developing zoning solutions addressing the spread of unlicensed shops and violations of setback regulations in certain areas of Aqaba The study aimed at assessing existing conditions and developing solutions in a manner that takes into consideration the interests of the various involved stakeholders The project involved carrying out research regarding different zoning approaches designing and implementing surveys of the areas in question meeting with inhabitants of the area and developing possible zoning solutions E publications In addition to the publications on the web site mentioned above documentation of Architectural Laboratory II article on saline soils article on the National Gallery Park and the CSBE 2004 news CSBE published on its web site two essays The first is entitled Legislation and Built Environment in the Arab Muslim City and deals with a presentation that was made to Diwan al Mimar by Saleh al Hathloul the Saudi Arabian educator and critic in the field of architecture and urban planning who also had served as Deputy Minister for Town Planning at the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs The second essay is entitled Half a Century in the Study of Islamic Art and deals with a presentation that was made to Diwan al Mimar by Oleg Grabar Professor Emeritus at Harvard University and the Institute for Advanced Study Princeton whom many consider the most influential historian of Islamic art and architecture of our day The publication of both essays was partially supported by the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development In addition CSBE has re published all articles of Urban Crossroads These articles are part of a regular column that CSBE director Mohammad al Asad has been writing for the English Daily The Jordan Times since the Spring of 2004 The column addresses issues relating to the urban built environment with an emphasis on Amman as well as other urban centers in Jordan The column aims at exploring the various physical cultural social economic and political dynamics that shape our cities and how these various dynamics may be harnessed to improve the quality of urban life Since The Jordan Times does not maintain an archive for its web publication the articles have been placed on the CSBE web site Over 55 Urban Crossroads articles are available on the CSBE web site Publication of Sahel Al Hiyari Architecture CSBE published during 2005 the English language monograph Sahel Al Hiyari Architecture The monograph which deals with the work of the award winning Jordanian architect Sahel Al Hiyari is authored by Mohammad al Asad and Sahel Al Hiyari with an introduction by Portuguese Pritzker Prize winning architect Alvaro Siza Urban Agriculture CSBE cooperated on a project on urban agriculture that is being implemented by the Environment and Sustainable Development Unit at the American University of Beirut through funding from the Cities Feeding People Initiative of the Canadian International Development Research Center IDRC The project included organizing courses and workshops that aim at raising the capacities of both public institutions and community organizations at developing urban agriculture projects Urban agriculture has the potential of providing sources of food and income for urban communities and also can contribute to greening the city and to constructing a sense of community among participants CSBE provided logistical support for organizing workshops relating to the subject of Urban Agriculture that took place in Amman during 2005 CSBE Urban Unit Considering the various challenges that face urban development in Jordan CSBE has decided to develop a consortium that brings together a group of high quality Jordanian experts in urban planning to address projects in this field The unit builds on previous activity regarding urbanism that CSBE has carried out as with the studies implemented for ASEZA The detailed report on the expert meeting on housing needs in Iraq that was organized by the United Nations Human Settlements Program was the first activity of the CSBE Urban Unit Partnership with the Aqaba Development Corporation ADC CSBE and ADC have initiated a partnership according to which CSBE would provide support for ADC s urban planning activities CSBE already has started work on a labor market housing needs projection study for ADC CSBE also is helping organize the process of identifying and commissioning a planning firm to design a labor housing village in Aqaba as well as following up on the design process Top Plans for 2006 Exploring the Edge Exploring the Edge aims at presenting examples of contemporary design projects relating to the built environment in Jordan that are both innovative and committed to design excellence Each project featured in Exploring the Edge is provided with documentary information and an analytical framework relating to it Exploring the Edge aims at bringing attention to innovative high quality built work being designed in Jordan and at contributing to the development of a critical discourse on the built environment in the country CSBE has chosen a project for the third issue of Exploring the Edge However construction of the project was delayed and it was not completed until late 2005 CSBE plans to publish the upcoming issue of Exploring the Edge in 2006 Support for Exploring the Edge is provided by a grant from the Graham
