    elegant neighborhoods Over the years the park had suffered from poor maintenance and neglect and consequently greatly deteriorated but had not lost its elegance and charm figures 1 2 3 4 In early 2002 The Center for the Study of the Built Environment CSBE proposed a project for the rehabilitation and development of the park CSBE consequently embarked on securing commitments for supporting the project from donors and also on coordinating with the Greater Amman Municipality the owner of the park to obtain their approval and support for the project CSBE was able to initiate construction work on the park in the Spring of 2004 and the work was completed about a year later in May 2005 figure 5 The rehabilitated park which continues to be open to the pubic includes outdoor sculpture displays children s play areas a performance exhibition space a café restaurant and model educational gardens demonstrating water conservation landscape practices CSBE carried out the rehabilitation of the park as part of its Water Conserving Landscapes project and in association with the National Gallery of Fine Arts of the Royal Society of Fine Arts The Water Conserving Landscapes project was supported by the Water Efficiency and Public Information for Action WEPIA program which was carried in association with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation and supported by The United States Agency for International Development USAID Considerable support for the construction work on the park also was provided by the Greater Amman Municipality and the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation The rehabilitated park now is an integral part of the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts and the park in fact was renamed as the National Gallery Park to emphasize this integral connection The new park consequently will include installations for outdoor sculptures to be commissioned and implemented over the next few years The park also provides a physical and visual connection between the original building of the National Gallery which is located across the street to the north of the park and the new extension of the National Gallery which includes the rehabilitation of an existing building from the 1950s and is located across the street to the south of the park figures 6 7 A renovation of the original building and the rehabilitation of the extension building were completed at the same time as the rehabilitation of the park The complete complex was officially inaugurated in May 2005 under the patronage of Their Majesties King Abdullah and Queen Rania The park also is intended as a model water conserving park that informs the public about water conserving landscape practices The park consequently includes a 160 cubic meter reservoir that has the capacity to harvest rainwater and that is connected to an efficient drip irrigation system The park features water conserving plants that need minimal irrigation and in many cases limited maintenance as well as gravel covered areas that require no irrigation figures 8 9 10 A special turf grass Bermuda grass also has been used

    use efficiency Traditional architecture would be attractive as a part time retreat for all levels of society or as homes for low income locals At present fossil non renewable groundwater resources are being depleted to an alarming extent Renewable groundwater tables of inland aquifers that depend on rainfall are drastically falling in level and increasing in salinity due to non sustainable irrigation methods and the infiltration of seawater Municipal waste traditionally has been dumped in landfill sites and at best subjected to only little treatment These sites are endangering the groundwater as a result of the various pollutants they contain that are seeping into the groundwater Areas used for farming landscaping or afforestation are showing alarming levels of soil salinity A good number of the millions of trees planted during the last decade are dying off or being damaged as a result of drought or salinity stress Dust storms and land erosion are becoming increasingly numerous where there is increase in soil salinity Problems with salinity Although soil salinity poses a threat to plant life there are methods of coping with it Many indigenous plants in this area including the date palm have a certain tolerance to soil salinity Some desert plants have developed protective mechanisms through modifying their growth habits or through biochemical adaptation This phenomenon may be studied in relation to many plants in the semi desert zone and in the Subkha an unfertile stony area that divides the coastal flats from the semi desert plateau Rising salinity levels in soils however are seriously affecting even date palm production in the region Efforts initiated by ICBA the International Centre for Biosaline Agriculture to select and develop date palms with a higher ability at tolerating salinity levels are prone to failure if salinity in irrigation water causes salinity levels in the soil to rise and no other soil amendment methods are implemented Soil salinity usually has either a naturally developed primary source or a secondary one Soil salinity is naturally developed near coastal flats or in arid zones when the water table of saline groundwater rises up to two to three meters from the soil surface and capillarity transports salt to the topsoil Secondary soil salinity is mostly due to inefficient irrigation methods Use of saline water for irrigation discrepancy between root uptake and evapotranspiration poor design of irrigation system or poor subsoil drainage can result in over concentration of salts Salinity in soils may be categorized in the following manner Extremely saline sites Over 16 dS m deciSiemens per meter or 9 600 ppm mgl parts per million per milligram The salinity level may rise up to that of seawater 30 000 ppm mgl Some of the groundwater in the north of the UAE has reached salinity levels of 25 dS m or half of that of seawater Plants adjusted to this level are halophytes like mangrove plants desert saltbushes like haloxyon or trees including various types of Tamarix Acacia and Prosopis Mesquite Very saline sites 8 16

    where the soil would store it for later use Also paved areas can serve various utilitarian and recreational purposes that include sitting playing or even parking vehicles 2 General Considerations for the Creation of Paved Areas It is important when creating a paved area in a garden to choose paving materials that are appropriate for outdoor use Select materials that resist glare and slippage and that do not show the accumulation of dust or dirt easily Also use materials that tolerate the various elements since outdoor areas are regularly subjected to potentially destructive forces including climatic changes and heavy uses Generally it is preferable to use locally available and tested paving materials These usually are less expensive and extra supplies can be found relatively easily when the need arises for maintenance or expansion work Also the availability of an experienced work force usually is more readily available for local materials Other issues that need to be considered include the composition of the bedding that supports the paving surface Ideally the bedding should be placed on top of an undisturbed layer of soil If such a layer is not available the soil would require compacting A compacted layer of aggregate then would be placed on top of the soil A layer of concrete might be needed over the aggregate and this concrete layer might require reinforcement The exact composition of the bedding depends on factors such as the type of soil originally located on the site and the type of use intended for the paved area Obviously an area intended for parking will need to be sturdier than one used primarily for seating 3 Paving Materials A wide variety of paving materials can be used within a garden context These include the following Concrete Pre cast concrete tiles Concrete provides a
