    images of fantastic animals However it is not clear if the people buried at this site were Scythians or Sauromatians But further archaeological investigations at the site will reveal more details that wil help solve disputed issues concerning the ethnicity of the peoples who inhabited the Don region in 5th and 4th centuries B C The work is carried out by archaeologists from of Rostov State University headed by Professor V Ye Maksimenko and in collaboration with the Don Expedition led Professor V I Guliayev of the Institute of Archaeology Russian Academy of Science EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM AND VOLUNTEER OPORTUNITIES The educational program includes assisting in the excavations of the kurgans There will be lectures on the ancient history of Don region And most exciting will be three days of excursions that will enclude visits to the excavations of the antique city Tanais located in the Don River delta to the Rostov na Donu Historical Museum and to Starocherkassk an old capital of Don Cossacks Visits to areas of natural beauty will enhance the archaeological experiences All of this is included in the session price SESSIONS Session 1 July 14 July 28 2001 Session 2 August 1 August 15 2001 Tax

  • Chastiye General Description
    of about thirty kurgans burial mounds located between the Seversky Donets River a tributary of the Don River and the Bystraya River This will be the third year of excavations at Chastiye Kurgany During the 2000 season excavations of the first mound revealed a burial of a rare type dated to the 5th 4th centuries B C Among the artifacts from this burial were a bronze cauldron a brazier various arrowheads and pottery Horse harness accoutrements in typical Scythian Animal Style included cast bronze heads and other images of fantastic animals However it is not clear if the people buried at this site were Scythians or Sauromatians During the 2001 season excavations continued under the direction of the Don Complex Archaeological Expedition consisting of two groups international students and volunteers headed by V Klyutchnikov editor of Donskaya Arkheologia journal and a Rostov state university students led by Prof V Maksimenko Six kurgans 2 3 4 8 and 9 see Map were excavated and thus provided informatin resolving more than a questions including the fact that this area had been used as a cemetery well over 1500 years One mound was dated to the Scythian period 4th century BC three were

    small grove of trees surrounded by fields one of which is covered with about 30 burrial mounds Volunteers will excavated one of the smaller kurgans so that it can be completed within two weeks The temperature in July and in the beginning of August is usually 25 35 C in the daytime However as the climate is continental the nights can be chilly enough for a sweat shirt It rarely rains during the summer in the steppes although this depends on the year Application Form DAILY ACTIVITIES RISE AND SHINE at 6 a m Breakfast Excavations from 7 a m till 1 p m Dinner is at 2 p m Then off to the river for a swim go on an excursion to the beautiful places of nature or to the nearest Cossack village Don t forget there are three full day of excursions besides these short explorations In the evening supper build the campfire and sing Singing around the campfire to the accompaniment of a guitar is very popular in Russia Visits by folk musicians and singers are also planned Then off to bed for a well deserved night s sleep EXCAVATING EQUIPMENT Equipment All heavy excavating equipment will

    of travel air train It is best to send this info via email as soon as possible to jkimball csen org If a participant arrives late in Rostov on Don telephone 516707 another number may be provided later These people will order a taxi and give the driver instructions on how to get to Chastiye Kurgans The participant will be responsible for taxi fare HEALTH INFORMATION For information on vaccinations and other health precautions travelers may call the toll free numbers of the international travelers hotline of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 1 877 FYI TRIP 1 877 394 8747 may use the CDC autofax service at 1 888 CDC FAXX 1 888 232 3299 or may access the CDC home page on the Internet http www cdc gov REGISTRATION Each foreigner in Russia must register in the city where he is invited not later than in three days after arrival in Russia All participants will register at the Rostov State University They will be taken there on the day of their arrival WHAT TO BRING It may be very hot and sunny in the daytime The burial mounds are located in an open field so we recommend hats and shirts with long sleeves for working It is rather dusty and after rain muddy at the site We recommend closed shoes as well as sandals Nights can be quite cool so bring a sweater sweatshirts and a jacket The camp has no electricity so you will need a flashlight There is a cold shower in the camp and we ll go to the bathhouse once a week but we shall also go to the river by bus every day not obligatory so bring a swimsuit Bring a sleeping and an air mattress as cots are not provided but
