    the vocation and how to qualify to take the test Collection System Maintenance This vocation deals with sewer maintenance and repair Laboratory Analyst This vocation deals with testing water in the laboratory Environmental Compliance Inspector This vocation deals with inspection of industrial wastewater treatment facilities and monitoring of wastewater that empties into the sewer system This is also known as Source Control Industrial Pretreatment Inspection IPP and Industrial Waste Inspection Mechanical Technologist This vocation deals with the maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment plants Mechanical Technology deals with the maintenance and repair of mechanical systems in the plant such as pumps and motors Electrical instrumentation Technologist Electrical Instrumentation Technology deals with the maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment plant electrical and instrumentation systems Industrial Waste Treatment Plant Operator This vocation deals with the operation of wastewater treatment plants in private industrial facilities Biosolids Land Application Management This vocation deals with the processing of inert biological materials sludge that result from the wastewater treatment process 2 Decide which grade level is best for you Grade levels go from entry level Grade 1 to the management level Grade 4 Grade levels 2 3 and 4 require a combination of experience and or education in the vocation to qualify for the test Since Grade 1 is an entry level test there are no qualifications and anybody can take the test However Grade 1 is designed for a person with about 1 year of experience in the vocation If you do not have one year of experience you will probably need to study before taking the test The chart below summarizes the basic experience GRADE 1 Qualifying Combination EDUCATION CERTIFICATIONS EXPERIENCE NONE REQUIRED TO TAKE TEST NONE REQUIRED TO TAKE TEST GRADE 2 Qualifying Combination EDUCATION CERTIFICATIONS EXPERIENCE A NONE 4 full time years in vocation B Hold Grade 1 certificate in vocation for 1 year 2 full time years in vocation C Associate s or higher degree in a related field 2 full time years in vocation D Bachelor s or higher degree in a related field 1 full time year in vocation GRADE 3 Qualifying Combination EDUCATION CERTIFICATIONS EXPERIENCE A NONE 6 full time years in vocation B Hold Grade 2 certificate in vocation for 2 years 4 full time years in vocation C Associate s or higher degree in a related field 4 full time years in vocation D Bachelor s or higher degree in a related field 3 full time year in vocation GRADE 4 Qualifying Combination EDUCATION CERTIFICATIONS EXPERIENCE A NONE 8 full time years in vocation with 1 year supervising others B Hold Grade 3 certificate in vocation for 2 years 6 full time years in vocation with 1 year supervising others C Associate s or higher degree in a related field 6 full time years in vocation with 1 year supervising others D Bachelor s or higher degree in a related field 5 full time years in vocation with 1 year supervising others Once you decide the

    you to lose all test fees You will also be required to pay an additional fee to reschedule within the testing window Call the CWEA office if you must reschedule transfer your existing test appointment in a different testing window You must cancel your existing test appoinment Test Transferring outside your testing window Rescheduling an existing test appointment in a different testing window is called transferring Only two transfers are allowed for each candidate per year You do not need to pay a fee to transfer to the next testing window If you transfer your test appointment a second time or if you transfer your appointment to a testing window other than the next one you will pay an additional test delivery fee You will lose your application fee if you do not notify CWEA to transfer your test application within 5 business days after your testing window ends Retest Instructions Candidates who need to take their tests again must submit an application and the appropriate fees All candidates must skip at least one testing window before retesting To be eligible to use the Retest Application candidates must schedule the new test within the same year as the original test If you will retest more than a year after your original test date you will need to fill out the regular test application Submit the appropriate form to CWEA along with the appropriate testing fees and wait to receive your approval letter You will then be able to schedule your test Test Cancellations Instructions To cancel your test application or appointment you must notify CWEA in writing with a signed letter you may email or mail a phone call will not be sufficient Your written request must be received at the CWEA office before your test window begins if you wish to avoid losing all the fees you have paid If you have a scheduled test appointment with Pearson VUE you must contact them directly to cancel your appointment in addition to notifying the CWEA office Refunds with an administrative fee deducted will be mailed within four weeks There are no exceptions to this policy DO NOT LOSE YOUR FEES The following will cause you to lose your test fees Failing to appear at your scheduled test appointment Arriving at the testing site without a current government issued photo ID Arriving at the testing site 15 minutes after your scheduled test appointment If you missed your test appointment arrived 15 minutes or more late or did not have proper identification you will need to pay an administrative fee This fee is required if you would like a new test appointment authorization code Item Appeals Candidates can appeal specific test questions by using the function Flag to Enter a Comment during the test in the Comment Review screen You are allowed to add comments about any question as long as you have time remaining CWEA staff and subject matter experts will review the comments Test Result Notification Immediately after your test

    I Join Benefits of membership Who are we Value of membership Frequently asked questions Join NOW Contact Staff Board Links Bookstore CWEA Certification study guide Wastewater treatment plant operator study guide Other CWEA books Books referenced in CWEA study guides Links to other wastewater book sources Member Leader Resources Board of Directors Committees Local Sections Event Calendar Leader Resources Awards Scholarship Orientation to CWEA Home Certification How to become certified Preparing for the test Study sessions CWEA Local Section Sponsored Study Sessions What to Expect and How to Use them CWEA offers various study guides for certification exams the study session being one of them Study sessions are provided by CWEA to anyone taking a certification exam though registration to take the next exam is not necessary in order to attend These sessions are offered throughout the state one in Northern and one in Southern California The purpose of these sessions is to give those registered to take a CWEA certifcation test and those who are interested in taking an exam in the future an opportunity to ask questions about the subject matter in their discipline It also provides an opportunity for test takers to share information and study with other test takers The study session is designed to be a helpful way for anyone taking a test to determine additional topics to study and to learn how to continue studying A moderator facilitates and is available to answer questions The Path to Certifcation is a quick guide on the steps you should take first before committing to your path to professional development To enhance your experience the day of the study session do a self assessment of your strengths and weaknesses by using this test preparation tool Jot down the KSAs you need work on and ask the moderator how you can best learn more about the KSA Knowledge Skills and Abilities KSA Gap Tool The KSA gap tool is designed to help the test candidate determine which KSA s they need to learn more about in order to be certain that they qualify to sit for the test and be successful in earning the certification Each KSA gap tool below includes the KSA statements for all grade levels Collection System Maintenance Environmental Compliance Inspector Electrical Instrumentation Technologist Laboratory Analyst Mechanical Technologist Plant Maintenance Technologist Experienced Moderators Moderators for the sessions are chosen by the TCP Technical Certification Program Chair of the local section in which the session is being held Those who are chosen are usually selected based upon certification experience holding a grade 3 or 4 certificate in the discipline but a gift for teaching is the main consideration according to Richard Delgadillo Southern Regional Liaison to TCP Previous moderators like Heather Duckett Larry Whitney and Steve Taylor have offered a wealth of information usually an entire library of sources in the study sessions they have facilitated for CWEA Candidate Handbooks and Study Guides Candidate Handbooks are a great resource to determine which certifcation vocation or grade
