    Questions about Lead in Drinking Water Columbus Water Works Response to the Water Crisis in Flint Michigan What s Your Water Really Worth Archives April 2016 March 2016 February 2016 January 2016 December 2015 November 2015 October 2015 September 2015 August 2015 July 2015 May 2015 April 2015 March 2015 January 2015 December 2014 November 2014 October 2014 September 2014 August 2014 June 2014 April 2014 January 2014 December 2013 November 2013 October 2013 September 2013 August 2013 June 2013 Subscribe RSS 2 0 Feed The Pipeline Monday January 13 2014 Powder Activated Carbon Usage Over the past few years Columbus water source Lake Oliver has contained a higher amount of algae com ponents MIB and Geosmin this is a fancy way of saying that there are natural compounds giving the drinking water a funny smell and taste Even though it is completely safe to drink these compounds we don t want our water to smell or taste funny So to get rid of the funny taste and smell Columbus Water Works CWW uses a powdered activated carbon PAC as needed The PAC absorbs the offensive compounds which are then removed by filtration One way to control costs of using the powdered activated carbon is to prevent the reason it s needed Therefore CWW purchased covers for each of the sedimentation basins reducing the growth of algae the source of the strange taste and odor In addition to purchasing covers CWW also bought new lab equipment to perform MIB and Geosmin tests in house By doing these tests at our own laboratory we are able to monitor the taste and odor causing compounds on a real time basis and administer carbon as needed Before testing at our own facility CWW would send the tests off and wait several days for

    August 2014 June 2014 April 2014 January 2014 December 2013 November 2013 October 2013 September 2013 August 2013 June 2013 Subscribe RSS 2 0 Feed The Pipeline Monday December 09 2013 Improved Backwash Filter System Water Filtration is the process of passing water through material such as a bed of sand coal or other granular substance to remove impurities from the water before we drink it These impurities consist of suspended particles fine silts and clays biological material bacteria and plankton among others in the water being treated The filtration process occurs after processes that remove most of the larger materials out of the raw water The filter media used in the filtration process must be changed approximately every 25 years Once a filter becomes dirty it has to be taken out of service and backwashed To clean the filter water is passed quickly upward through the filter opposite the normal direction called back flushing or backwashing to remove embedded particles Prior to this step compressed air may be blown up through the bottom of the filter to break up the compacted filter media to aid the backwashing process this is known as air scouring This contaminated water can be disposed of or it can be recycled by mixing with the raw water entering the plant The filtration process equipment to include filter media under drain system and filter valves need to be properly maintained and replaced when the equipment life cycle is reached Just this year Columbus Water Works completed a major renovation to the North Columbus Water Resources Facility NCWRF replacing the plants aged water filtration system components The project replaced the filter media with new media replaced the under drain system with a new under drain system with the use of an air scour backwash system and

    this Holiday Season During the holiday season many families will gather together for meals and celebration After the turkey or chicken is cooked what does your family do with the grease Some families seal it in a plastic container and throw it out with the garbage some save it for future use and others may pour it down the kitchen drain or toilet Did you know that even if cooking grease is poured down the drain as a liquid and tap water is run to wash it down it can still clog the sewer line Fats Oils and Grease FOG are major culprits in clogging up the sewer lines because they slowly harden and will make it difficult for the sewage to flow to the treatment plants The toughest part is that these clogs do not only affect the person pouring grease down the drains it can clog the lines for an entire neighborhood As these clogs grow the wastewater has nowhere to go and can back up into your home or overflow from manholes and end up in our streams and rivers When this happens it can be damaging to the environment At the Columbus Water Works CWW we value family celebrations and holiday traditions Fry your turkeys a nd chickens and enjoy your holidays CWW would like to help you dispose of your cooking grease without putting it down the drains so we are hosting another Grease Recycling Pick up event where you can bring your cooking grease and we will handle the rest All you have to do is collect your old cooking grease in any container and bring it to one of our Grease Recycling events The next event is January 11 2014 from 10am to 2pm Click here for details It is also important to
