    most famously enjoyed in Italy The information below on Slow Food and Slow Cities is taken from the website SlowFood com During the first meeting of Slow Cities held in Orvieto in October 1999 the Mayor of Greve in Chianti Signor Paolo Saturnini was elected co ordinator of the movement The current Slow Cities President is Stefano Cimicchi Mayor of Orvieto Charter of Association The development of local communities is based among other things on their ability to share and acknowledge specific qualities to create an identity of their own that is visible outside and profoundly felt inside The phenomenon of globalization offers among other things a great opportunity for exchange and diffusion but it does tend to level out differences and conceal the peculiar characteristics of single realities In short it proposes median models which belong to no one and inevitably generate mediocrity Nonetheless a burgeoning new demand exists for alternative solutions which tend to pursue and disseminate excellence seen not necessarily as an elite phenomenon but rather as a cultural hence universal fact of life Hence the success of those who have pursued specificness and told the world all about it Slow Food which has set out to build its success and international growth on the quality of life on taste first and foremost and the Cities which have distinguished themselves in this activity have decided to establish an international network of Slow Cities From now on such cities will conduct common experiences based on a shared code of tangible verifiable conduct embracing everything from good eating to the quality of hospitality services facilities and the urban fabric itself In the field of food and wine in particular they will make use of the specific competencies of Slow Food Slow Cities will sign a series of pledges and their compliance therewith will be verified periodically and homogeneously in all cities which adhere to the initiative in all countries and in all continents Slow Cities are cities which 1 implement an environmental policy designed to maintain and develop the characteristics of their surrounding area and urban fabric placing the onus on recovery and reuse techniques 2 implement an infrastructure policy which is functional for the improvement not the occupation of the land 3 promote the use of technologies to improve the quality of the environment and the urban fabric 4 encourage the production and use of foodstuffs produced using natural eco compatible techniques excluding transgenic products and setting up where necessary presidia to safeguard and develop typical products currently in difficulty in close collaboration with the Slow Food Ark project and wine and food Presidia 5 safeguard autocthonous production rooted in culture and tradition which contributes to the typification of an area maintaining its modes and mores and promoting preferential occasions and spaces for direct contacts between consumers and quality producers and purveyors 6 promote the quality of hospitality as a real bond with the local community and its specific features removing the physical and cultural obstacles which may

    make a presentation of their work that looks at the impact on our future urban spaces as a result of planning for sustainability It will include Space quality analysis Daylighting and shade modelling Salt bath modelling techniques Update August 2003 Melbourne City Council s new administration building known as CH2 short for Council House 2 will be a world leading example of sustainable design and operation Details of the building and the assessment of the Green Building Council are included in the media release below available as a word download by clicking on the underlined title CH2 LAUNCHED PUBLICLY COUNCIL ON TRACK FOR NEW STANDARD IN GREEN DESIGN From the revolutionary air cooling in the basement to vertical gardens and wind turbines on the roof the City of Melbourne s new building on Little Collins St is setting out to break new ground in sustainable office development Melbourne Lord Mayor John So said the building known as Council House 2 or CH2 was being designed with environmental considerations embedded into every part of it Accordingly plans for the building had recently been awarded a six star rating world leader status by the Green Building Council which announced its new rating system on July 30 see www gbcaus org With CH2 we are striving for the Green Building Council s highest honour a six star rating that would put Melbourne know how and design on the international stage while creating a building that will return financial and environmental rewards for many long years to come the Lord Mayor said CH2 will add enormous vibrancy to this significant section of Little Collins St with new shops cafes and pedestrian connections and as it does so it will strive to set a new standard in how buildings can deliver financial social and environmental rewards This will be a win win situation for everyone involved we are taking a responsible long term approach to developing a building the council needs to have while setting an example of what must be achieved if we are to be a truly sustainable and thriving city The Lord Mayor said elements proposed for inclusion in the design of CH2 included A light coloured southern façade where cool fresh air would be drawn in and down through the building The northern façade would be a dark colour to absorb hot stale air from the building and allow it to rise up and out of the wind driven turbines on the roof Cladding the western façade in wooden louvres made from recycled timber that would move with the sun to reduce glare and heat gain The northern façade would comprise open air balconies with electronically controlled blinds to reduce glare and heat gain Vines would grow along the full height of the building to create a green microclimate Gardens would also be established on each floor and on the roof The ratio of walls to windows would be 50 50 to minimise heat loss gain through the glass Windows would

    Southbank Despite repeated requests for State Government co operation to confirm the Northbank proposal the State Government provided no reply The area that is now the skatepark at Alexandra Gardens was chosen as a temporary location pending the expected decision of the Sate Government to endorse the Melbourne City Council Northbank proposal Despite State Government delays the day that I as Chair announced the temporary sighting of the Alexandra Gardens skatepark the State Government issued statements suggesting a skatepark should be sighted in Northbank The Alexandra Gardens skatepark has subsequently renamed Riverslide Skatepark The Melbourne City Council website describes it in this way Riverslide Skatepark in Alexandra Gardens was designed with skaters for skaters It has a real street skating focus so you can test your stuff on the ramps and funboxes There are areas for beginners intermediate and more advanced skaters There is also lots of shade and heaps of room for spectators or those taking a breather plus a café for refreshments You can also get first aid on site in the skate office Where is it The new spot in Alexandra Gardens is down from Flinders Street station on the river near the boatsheds you might have been to these Gardens for Moomba Where can I skate on the way to the park Council has spoken to skaters traffic experts and other park users to work out the best skate access routes to the skate park Once the best routes have been decided we ll make sure more details are available on this web site and around town In this section you can find information on History of the Skatepark Other Skate Parks Skatesafe Program and preferred skating routes in the City What Do You Think A Riverslide Skate park location map and how to get there from Flinders Street station is available from this hotlink The following media release of December 15 2000 details more about the skatepark Temporary Skate Park for the City Media Release The City of Melbourne will convert a disused depot in Alexandra Gardens as the site for a temporary Skate Park replacing the present one on the Queen Victoria Hospital Site The temporary Skate Park is expected to open in time for the Easter school holidays It is expected to operate for between two and three years while the City of Melbourne develops a permanent City Skate Park The project is expected to cost 460 000 including the costs of relocating the depot renovating existing buildings and constructing the skating facility Designers Aspect Melbourne Pty Ltd are working with some of the skaters who use the present City Skate Park to design and construct the new facility Chair of the City of Melbourne Environment Community and Cultural Development Committee Cr David Risstrom said the provision of a skate facility in the city was important for young people Many young people have been concerned about the future of skating in the city because of the redevelopment of the Queen Victoria Hospital site
