    IL Chicago IL The Dax Program Every year DePaul University students face housing instability and or homelessness Depaul USA aims to partner with the university and the community to form the network needed to meet the needs of those young people Providing a young person a stable supportive housing solution not only keeps him her off the streets it keeps him her moving on a path towards a degree and a fulfilling future The Dax Host home Program model provides an alternative to the shelter system for youth facing homelessness Our volunteer hosts open their homes to DePaul University students aged 18 to 24 for an academic term 10 weeks Both the students and hosts undergo a screening and training process facilitated and supported by Depaul USA Students accepted into the program have the desire and ability for self improvement and a case manager works extensively with the student Our goal is to create the home environment necessary for the student to continue his her education and work towards self sufficiency Click for Program Information Contact Information This program beginning in 2015 is always looking for more volunteers to host students Please contact us at info depaulusa org or call

    sufficiency In New Orleans Depaul USA provides access to the St Vincent DePaul Free Pharmacy and the Vision Center Additionally our Support Specialist works with clients to assess refer and transport clients to necessary services available throughout the community Beginning in 2014 Depaul USA began the rapid re housing program moving individuals who have faced years of homelessness into apartments These 15 units scattered throughout the city give individuals the ability to settle into a stable lifestyle and rebuild lives of greater dignity How Our Van Makes a Difference in New Orleans During 2013 430 individuals were supported with a transportation and case management program The van made 152 trips travelling more than 2 400 miles Of these individuals 168 were transported to various agencies for services 235 received medications 56 had eye exams and or received glasses and 42 participated in housing appointments The History of the Project Hurricane Katrina destroyed many of the services that assisted the homeless while simultaneously increasing the homeless population After Katrina the Rebuild Center at St Joseph Parish brought together the collaborative efforts of the Harry Thomson Center operated by the Jesuits and the Presentation Sisters Lantern Light project At the Rebuild Center

    homeless at entry 100 suffer from a major mental illness 90 have co occurring mental illness with a substance related disorder 60 suffer from a chronic health disorder 20 have a developmental disability 60 are between ages of 35 54 62 African American 32 Caucasian 6 other 14 military veterans 100 of women experienced domestic violence The chronically homeless includes individuals who are persistently homeless and may not be able to get out of homelessness without serious ongoing help These individuals comprise a small fraction of the homeless however over 50 of resources are devoted to meeting the needs of this group Program Outcomes More than 90 who entered program with zero income now receive a steady one Approximately 95 of clients become and remain connected with health care providers Approximately 90 have decreased encounters with the criminal justice system and 100 have decreased inappropriate use of hospital emergency rooms How Do the Programs W ork Clients are typically housed within two weeks of establishing eligibility Landlords and tenants maintain a close relationship to ensure a successful placement for both Residents choose which unit and neighborhood suits them best the units are scattered throughout the city to allow a person to feel he or she is a regular member of the community Apartments are fully set up so they become home right away Scattered site housing people are more likely to integrate within their community when they live in regular housing as a neighbor in their community Programs can place persons with zero income Turnover is low and occupancy is kept at 100 Crisis intervention services are available 24 hours a day seven days a week Transportation support increases clients potential to achieve their goals and address their needs The Projects PLUS and MORE program teams network and coordinate care

    Lord and gave him an opportunity to address and talk about problems and the good things He explained About a month ago some of the guys at Whosoever said that Depaul would be a good place for me where I could save money and then a spot opened up I ve been working full time at a lumber yard for almost three months and now that I live at Depaul after a full day of work I can relax talk with the guys and study the Bible This is a beautiful facility and I really like the people that work here When asked about his goals Russ said My short term goal is to get my driver s license back I also want to go back to school to the Philadelphia Community College and get a degree in Medical Imaging and Diagnostics I have a degree in computer programming but now I want to work with people My counselor has been really helpful she helped me work out a strategy to go back to school and how to budget I have been saving money Long term I want to get my own place after I ve saved about 4 000
