  • Origins of our Vincentian Values
Paul a major social reformer in 17th century France Known as the Saint of Charity he revolutionized outreach to poor and disenfranchised people He had immense confidence in the goodness of God and the value of each person and dreamed not only of expressing this love in action but also of acting in a way that encouraged every person to love with his or her whole heart Vincent recruited a large group of co workers inspired them with his love for poor people and built bridges between rich people and those living in poverty Vincentian values which were at the core of Depaul s foundation continue to be at the heart of Depaul International They include a commitment to reach out to the poorest of the poor to focus on action rather than words to do what we say we will do and to be innovative in our approach They are based on gospel values of reverence respect compassion love mercy and effective service of the neighbour which flow from the teachings of Jesus especially as they regard the least the poorest and the marginalized These gospel values receive expression in contemporary peace and justice teachings and are the foundation of Vincentian values Depaul International s experience reveals these values to be widely shared Board members and staff for whom there is no religious requirement bring with them the same or similar values from their own religious traditions or political and humanist convictions The consequent resonance with Vincentian values has enriched Depaul International and grounded the tangible unity within the charity Depaul prides itself on being a values based organization People testify to the tangible difference values make and the way values consciously and explicitly embraced unite the staff volunteers and people we work with in a common life experience
