    residents come to Depaul House they meet with their Program Counselors and set goals they want to accomplish William Giles came to Depaul House on May 11th and his goal was to get a job and then get his own place William had lost his job and came to Depaul from Somerset Shelter He explained that he doesn t like to think of himself as homeless Coming to Depaul has been great The staff have helped tremendously they have kept me up and encouraged me to keep going when I was really down They helped me to put together my resume and I must have sent out about seventy I spent the last two months trying to get a job I was job searching on the computer and saw an opening at Drexelbrook Catering I sent in my resume and about four weeks later they called me in for an interview I got the job It is part time with a lot of hours and a chance for advancement I would like to stay at Depaul for a little while longer so I can save up money and find an affordable place to live Depaul seems like a home to

    had a lot to do with a drug problem and not being able to save money He realized he was not progressing and went to the Whosoever Gospel Mission where he stayed for about seven months One of the counselors there suggested that the program at Depaul might be a good fit As Charles said Now that I am here I haven t looked back beyond my stay at Whosever I ve been at Depaul since May 2010 and I have my own room and a door that locks There is some structure here but I basically have freedom to do what I want I like the staff here I get along with the residents and the counselors listen and try to do what you ask them to do My biggest problem is money because I like to spend it but I take to heart the suggestions about budgeting and I pay my fees and savings on time There are other resources here that you can take advantage of and that support has been there when I needed it Charles is the caretaker at the Mann Music Theatre where he works eight months out of the year and he frequently

  • The Gallery at Depaul USA
    Gallery hosts two exhibits each year featuring local and emerging artists and or exploring such concepts as home community homelessness inclusion and exclusion We believe the arts are an effective way of getting people to support Depaul USA and its mission to serve individuals facing homelessness The Gallery also makes Depaul House a true third place a space where residents and the larger community can meet engage and mutually enrich each other s lives What We Seek Depaul USA offers colleges and universities the opportunity to program The Gallery for a year This involves developing the themes for the two exhibits curating the art writing exhibit catalogs and planning the two opening night receptions Depaul USA will provide the requisite administrative and financial support for the exhibits How This Works Programming The Gallery makes a challenging and enriching internship for students studying art non profit administration sociology community development or other disciplines Students would use theoretical and applied skills to develop the concepts for the shows identify and secure the art curate the exhibits and produce catalogs and opening night receptions Students would collaborate with a wide range of people including the Depaul USA management team homeless men artists and

    of the late Cardinal Basil Hume who brought together the Daughters of Charity the Society of St Vincent de Paul and the Passage in Victoria to set up a new charity to respond to the needs of the growing numbers of vulnerable young people sleeping rough on the streets of London In 1998 Depaul UK began working on a national level and in 2002 Depaul Ireland opened in Dublin as a result of an invitation from the Irish government From those founding roots Depaul International was formed in 2004 with the aim of tacking homelessness on a global level with a particular focus on Central and Eastern Europe Depaul International acts as the parent company for all of the Depaul subsidiaries and holds responsibility for the overall management and control of the group as well as working to expand the Depaul group into new countries Depaul International now has subsidiary groups working with homeless and disadvantaged people in the UK Ireland Slovakia Ukraine and the USA with France in development Depaul Slovensko opened in Bratislava Slovakia in 2006 providing a nightshelter and infirmary for rough sleepers Depaul Ukraine opened in Kharkiv Ukraine in 2007 providing a street outreach service and medical support for young people sleeping rough in the city Both these subsidiaries have developed their services since with Depaul Ukraine now working in Odessa too Depaul International has been committed to raising the money required to support Depaul Slovensko and Depaul Ukraine for the first five years of their operations We are also helping to develop these charities through mentoring arrangements with our senior managers in the UK and Ireland The aim is that after five years Depaul Slovensko and Depaul Ukraine should be fully independent members of the group structure with their own development and fundraising capacity In
