  • Public Voting Ends in World Bank Apps for Development Competition | Development Gateway
    to create IT platforms that use World Bank data to address pressing development questions particularly those related to the Millennium Development Goals MDGs AidData with support from Esri built the Development Loop for submission to the contest It uses sub national data from the World Bank and African Development Bank overlaid with local development indicators and project success stories from GlobalGiving to produce a visual story of aid need and feedback Development Loop ranked among the top 10 contenders in the popular vote Between now and March 15 th nine judges from the World Bank Nokia Brookings Google and other ICT and development organizations will assess the quality implementation and potential impact on the Millennium Development Goals of each submitted application Winners will be announced in April 2011 Development Gateway believes in the power of mapping technology as a tool to enhance aid coordination and planning as well as government transparency and accountability With applications like Development Loop governments can ensure that aid is allocated to areas of highest need and local watchdog organizations can monitor government progress in achieving national development goals In the coming months AidData will work to enhance the capabilities of the Development Loop platform and

  • AMP Knowledge Sharing Workshop, Nairobi 2010 | Development Gateway
    a focus on how to use the AMP system to country delegations telling their stories and presenting the results they ve achieved using AMP Countries discussed everything from the structure and successes of their aid management departments to progress achieved tracking off budget aid and ways that AMP assisted in the production of official aid reports One of the most exciting things demonstrated was the public view of AMP piloted by Kosovo Following that presentation other countries immediately expressed interest in making their AMPs public so that citizens can see the aid activities being implemented in their country This year s workshop also featured outside speakers for the first time including representatives from the International Aid Transparency Initiative IATI and Ushahidi a non profit information visualization and mapping organization Researchers from Brigham Young University who work with Development Gateway on the AidData initiative also demonstrated the work they have done to map aid activities at the sub national level For me the highlight of this year s workshop was the video presented by the delegation from the Democratic Republic of the Congo They spent a lot of time creating a short film about their aid management unit including interviews of

    foster aid transparency and effectiveness by gathering standardizing and interpreting project level information on development activities Development Loop is designed to address the need for increased transparency accountability and assessment of the complex flow of development funds across the globe It incorporates data on projects funded by the World Bank and African Development Bank overlaid with regional development statistics and project success stories reported by GlobalGiving to produce a visual story of aid need and impact Future versions will employ crowdsourcing tools allowing development professionals and community beneficiaries of aid to create or update project data from anywhere in the world via free web and mobile applications In doing so AidData hopes to generate a feedback loop between aid donors and recipients Development Loop goes far beyond depicting where and how funds are being spent says Stephen Davenport Senior Director for Business Development at Development Gateway an AidData partner It shows how technology tools have the potential to transform the way aid is delivered and monitored by giving citizens a voice in the process Development Loop has a simple mapping interface that allows users to zoom in and out switch between basemaps from providers like Bing and OpenStreetMap view relevant information such as transportation infrastructure health facilities and development indicators and access brief descriptions of development projects with the click of a button The Apps for Development competition prototype was built using Esri s ArcGIS API for Microsoft Silverlight WPF and ArcGIS Server technology Development Loop utilizes World Development Indicators made available through the World Bank Open Data initiative World Bank and African Development Bank activity data used in the prototype was geocoded through the Mapping for Results project a partnership between AidData and the World Bank Development organizations interested in collaborating to integrate project information into Development Loop may
