    an endeavor to fight the deadly infectious disease tuberculosis Radio Benziger rather took an innovative path of disseminating the information with the help of dramas discussions and interviews and was rewarded for its out of box idea by the Kollam District TB Centre in Kerala on World TB day on March 24 Focusing on the issue the Community Radio Station based in the southern part of India produced a set of 10 radio programmes over a period of two and half months to make people aware of the TB treatment and its precautions along with the help from district health officials We tried to make the radio programmes as simple as possible but at the same time our focus was to spread awareness within the community Most of the affected people are migrants from the northern part of India and barely know Malayalam said Ferdinand Peter Station Director Radio Benziger Peter added that after the broadcast of their health programme there had been 1 5 percent decrease in the number of cases in Kollam district More than 2 000 people are diagnosed from this disease in our area and are being treated in different TB centres in Kollam We felt that it is our responsibility to make people aware and we succeeded in out attempt Through its programmes Radio Benziger discussed several aspects of TB including information about the disease precaution treatment duration DOTs centres and methods to identify the bacteria that spread the disease Programme producer Dr M Venu Kumar said Before planning for the programme we did a small research and we came to know that most of the affected people are migrants So we incorporated the views of doctors and experts wrote songs and dramas and with the help of local artists and produced the programmes We

    concerned stakeholders Scheduled Castes SCs and Scheduled Tribes STs are two of the most vulnerable communities in India in terms of discrimination and violence Some of the worst forms of violence that they face have been officially recognized as atrocities under the SC ST PoA Act There are 22 forms of atrocities covered under the Act out of which there are some most gruesome forms such as murder rape mass attack arson etc attracting higher penalties in order to deter the occurrence of such crimes The ATM system has been built with an objective of providing a tool in the hands of the Dalits and Adivasi to report atrocity and avail timely justice ATM is also extremely useful for Dalit human rights activists and organisations to create and maintain a repository of cases track records and facilitate information exchange for timely action says V A Ramesh Nathan General Secretary National Dalit Movement for Justice NDMJ At present more than 100 atrocity cases have been reported from different parts of the country The users of concerned states have sent Email and SMS notifications to the officials in their region regarding the cases of atrocities against dalits As per the National Crime Records Bureau 2001 12 the extent of atrocities committed against SC s ST s is enormous Nearly 3 70 234 crimes have been committed against SCs STs 15 917 women have reportedly been raped 7 900 murdered 49 514 brutally attacked and severely injured and 1 59 692 other forms of atrocities have been committed Only 32 of crimes have been registered under SC ST PoA Act and the conviction rate under SCs and STs PoA Act is meagre 24 8 ATM contains functionality that is common across all human rights organisations and particularly to National Coalition partners working on
