  • of Mission and Culture at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago for a fourth term as the international coordinator of Anthropos Institute AI Founded in 1931 AI cultivates collaboration in the fields of anthropology ethnology linguistics and religious studies The AI center that is located in Sankt Augustin Germany handles the publication of Anthropos International Review of Anthropology and Linguistics a peer reviewed journal that contains research articles reports commentaries and reviews in all areas of cultural anthropology and the scientific study of religion In its 110th year Anthropos is published in five languages In addition to Anthropos the AI center in Germany publishes two monograph series Studia and Collectanea Instituti Anthropos maintains a library of more than 102 000 volumes and holds the international AI archives There are also nine other centers in India Japan Papua New Guinea Indonesia Ghana and Brazil where one or more AI members work Father Schroeder Father Philip Gibbs SVD in Papua New Guinea and Father Michael Sebastian Maria SVD in India make up the AI International Council Over time the work of Anthropos Institute tended to be only academic with less relevance for regular SVD mission activity Father Schroeder said Since 2000 the Generalate worldwide headquarters of the Society of the Divine Word has been intentionally promoting a shift from a sort of ivory tower of experts to an international network of currently 40 SVD AI members with backgrounds in the social and religious sciences working around the world The newly introduced structure of an international coordinator and council of Anthropos Institute is striving to bridge the gap among the AI members working around the world and between AI and the down to earth SVD mission work In the early years St Arnold Janssen founder of the Society of the Divine Word supported anthropologist Wilhelm Schmidt and other SVD in their study of the cultures societies and languages normally in places where the SVD were working Father Schroeder said Anthropos Institute was later founded to maintain this scientific study as one aspect of the Society s missionary work Respected anthropologist Wilhelm Schmidt SVD who developed the anthropological theory of culture circles and was tapped by Pope Pius XI to set up the Vatican s Ethnological Museum became AI s first director As such he worked with founding members Divine Word Fathers Martin Gusinde Wilhelm Koppers and Paul Schebesta ethnographers and authorities in their fields of study Father Gusinde studied peoples of Argentina Chile Colombia Japan Papua New Guinea the Philippines the United States and Venezuela He is credited with saving the memory of the cultural history of the now extinct Yamana people of Tierra del Fuego Father Koppers is known for advocating a historical comparative approach to understanding cultural phenomenon His studies of hunting and food gathering tribes led to theories on the origin and development of society Father Schebesta who specialized in Egyptology and ethnology studied the Ituri pygmies of the Congo and was the first to richly describe pygmy cultures of Africa

  • priesthood has been 25 years in the making They still send old fashioned Christmas cards I value those things You can see the effort It takes effort and sacrifice to show your love and concern I m always excited to look in my mailbox In return he makes a point to wish each of his Facebook friends a happy birthday and carries the encouragement of others into his continuing ministries Earlier this year Paul returned from his Cross Cultural Training Program CTP a requirement to complete preparation to become a Divine Word Missionary He spent his in the outback of Australia He spent a year living in Alice Springs a small city of 25 000 in the remote desert predominantly inhabited by aboriginal people Paul worked at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart the only Catholic parish in Alice Springs The parish drew residents of many cultures Africans Filipinos Indians Pacific Islanders and White Australians His experience among such a diverse community will help him as a deacon This year Paul will work at St Thomas the Apostle parish in Chicago s Hyde Park neighborhood home of the University of Chicago He is believed to be the first Divine Word Missionary to fulfill his diaconate at St Thomas the Apostle They say it takes a village to raise a child and that faith begins at home In the case of 33 year old Thien Duc Nguyen s hometown it took faith and family to birth a village When I look back at my life when I grew up why I joined the SVD I see a lot of grace said Thien who entered the Society of the Divine Word in 2000 When Communists took control of North Vietnam in 1954 they gave Catholics an ultimatum shed your religion or leave So Thien s great great uncle a diocesan priest led villagers from the north to the south and into the Highlands of Vietnam There they cut through jungle built homes kept a watchful eye for tigers and named the village Vinh Hoa Today the population of Vinh Hoa is approximately 5 000 Thien said that about 200 people born in his village have become priests brothers and nuns That number includes about 20 Divine Word Missionaries and in Thien s family alone there are 30 members of religious orders Thien who professed religious vows in Vietnam came to the United States in 2009 to study English and theology Thien was chosen to participate in a special Divine Word Program through which provinces in six countries exchange students Thien wanted to learn the English language so he asked his superiors to consider sending him to Australia the Philippines or the United States After spending time at Divine Word College in Epworth Iowa Thien began his post graduate work at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago For his CTP he stayed in the Chicago Province and worked in economically disenfranchised parishes in West Virginia Thien will serve as a deacon at St Henry

  • first assignment in Mozambique a country in southern Africa that he knows well He spent three years there during his Cross Cultural Training Program CTP a preparation for his years as a missionary priest Divine Word Missionaries first set foot in Mozambique in 1911 Since then they have been responding to the needs of the communities in which they serve and seeking to spread the Gospel message to new believers Father Giang will join 16 confreres who are working in seven locations throughout the country Their efforts provide educational opportunities pastoral care medical clinics and Bible studies In a state of war for nearly three decades 11 years of fighting for independence and 17 years of civil war conflict left the country in dire straits with a crumbling national infrastructure a corrupt political system and a depleted number of professional people For 50 years Mozambique has ranked among the world s most impoverished nations The main sources of income are fishing mining agriculture and natural gas Despite the recent past Mozambicans have hope in the future thanks to newly discovered natural resources New reserves of natural gas and oil have led to highly anticipated economic growth and improvements in the infrastructure in the cities Even before going to Mozambique for CTP Father Giang approached Africa with fascination and curiosity He s accustomed to adapting to new environments Born in Vietnam the 8 year old Giang left Vietnam with his siblings and mother Phuong Chau They moved to San Jose Calif to join their father Phap Nguyen who had emigrated earlier The young Giang quickly became familiar with his new surroundings He actively became involved in the Vietnamese Eucharistic Youth Movement which he called a very important part of my life and in high school he was a Junior Air Force ROTC cadet That experience taught me the importance of leadership and service to others which spilled into my missionary calling he said In 2001 the young Gian g graduated from Oak Grove High School and in 2006 earned a bachelor s degree from Divine Word College in Epworth Iowa Although transitioning into a new culture is nothing new to him he said his time in Mozambique was eye opening I realized I am different my skin color straight hair being from the United States he said I was like a child entering a new culture a new country learning the language It was humbling to go through that experience again Of Mozambique Father Giang said My curiosity led me there I wanted to see the other faces of God The first day I asked myself Am I dreaming or is it real Just as Mozambique is experiencing rebirth Father Giang has goals for the future too I wish to live life with a sense of gratitude to try to see the world differently through a different lens so that I can see God in the people I meet Hopefully my mirror my lens will help them see God whom we
