  • Member Documents Member Directories Member Education Characteristic Dimensions St Elizabeth in Chicago Appalachian District Canada District Caribbean District Midwest District St Anselm Chicago St Elizabeth Chicago St Joseph the Worker Wheeling Ill St Patrick Fort Wayne Ind New Jersey District Southern District of St Arnold St Elizabeth Chicago Founded in 1881 St Elizabeth is Chicago s second oldest Catholic Church and the city s oldest African American Catholic parish The parish school also named St Elizabeth has provided God centered education for more than 120 years Divine Word Missionaries have served the parish since 1924 In 1924 two parishes St Elizabeth and St Monica merged The history of St Elizabeth was enriched by both communities The Archdiocese of Chicago initially established St Elizabeth to serve Irish immigrants who lived on Chicago s Southside Eight years later Father Augustus Tolton the first recognized African American priest organized St Monica also on the city s Southside Father Tolton was born a slave in Missouri and grew up in Quincy Ill Denied permission to enter a seminary in the United States he persevered and studied at the Sacred College of Propaganda in Rome where he was ordained in 1886 When Father Tolton died of sunstroke in 1897 the pastor of St Elizabeth accepted pastoral duties for the parish In 1924 St Monica and St Elizabeth became one and Cardinal George Mundelein asked the Divine Word Missionaries to assume responsibly for the consolidated church Like the parish St Elizabeth School has a distinguished history Opened in 1885 the elementary school grew quickly By 1890 it expanded to include secondary education Within 20 years enrollment increased from 250 students to more than 700 In the early 1920s Mother Katharine Drexel who was canonized in 2000 sent Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament to teach the African
