  • Happy birthday, Sargent!
met the Subercaseaux in Venice and there Sargent and Ramón himself an amateur painter shared a studio in the storied Palazzo Rezzonico Over the course of a couple of months the two worked steadily and earnestly soaking up all of the inspiration Venice had to offer Both artists painted the city s unique canals and native citizens but perhaps the most interesting work to come out of their time there is Ramón Subercaseaux in a Gondola a brilliant portrait not only of the Chilean diplomat but also of the city of Venice itself Subercaseaux appears dignified and intent as he glances just slightly upward to Sargent his subject whom he paints using the travel watercolor set he holds in his hand Floating lazily along a canal the sights sounds and even smells of Venice sparkle around them further enhanced by Sargent s uncanny ability to capture the essence of a place in paint The water in the canal appears almost liquid to the touch as convincing as the stucco surface of the buildings on the painting s periphery and the light filtering through the canvas canopy on the gondola Rarely in Sargent s oeuvre are the tables turned on him where he is simultaneously both artist and subject making this work incredibly special Though Subercaseaux s watercolor portrait of Sargent was once known to exist its whereabouts are currently unknown Rest assured however that I am ever on the hunt to find it and if I do I hope to reunite the two works of art for their own tête à tête Details not to be missed The quick yet skillful sketch of the gondoliers in the background The speck of white paint on Subercaseaux s hand making his wedding ring I don t know why but I ve always

  • The Hooker Collection is ready for its close up.
continued to collect adding a more popular dimension to her collection In 2003 Art Antiques Magazine named her one of the top 100 collectors in the country Now it is time to put the spotlight on the Hooker Collection As we did with the Stout Collection we are publishing a catalogue of the Hooker collection The Charlotte Stout Hooker Gift of English and Continental Ceramics The catalogue celebrates Mrs Hooker s achievements as a collector and provides the public with a record of the works in collection The release of the catalogue will coincide with an exhibition of the Hooker Collection Everyday English The Charlotte Stout Hooker Gift of English and Continental Ceramics this summer In the meantime the authors and book designers have been hard at work preparing a book that is both beautiful and interesting to anyone who reads it But before any of that work even began we had to photograph every single work in the collection Ceramic by its very nature is not an easy subject to photograph It does not love the camera The shiny glaze coating the majority of ceramic pieces causes unwanted reflections The pattern and decoration on flat wares like saucers must be visible It took a lot of plastic stands and even more museum wax to make the saucer in these photographs look as it if were magically standing on end Yet they still need to look real tangible Teacups and saucers are functional objects after all This required artful arranging and a very patient photographer Here is a little behind the scenes look from the photo shoot Be on the lookout for these images in The Charlotte Stout Hooker Gift of English and Continental Ceramics catalogue this summer Photo styling a cup and saucer the resulting image Bristol Double Ogee

  • January Family Studio Recap: Magnets
fridge You ll need Paper Scissors or precut shapes Markers crayons colored pencils Magnetic tape Start by cutting your own shapes or use precut ones in the shapes you like You can put anything you want on your magnet I saw some really creative things One person used a rectangular shape to make a fish tank Another folded a trapezoid to look like a paper airplane You could make reminders of your new year resolutions to see all year as well There s no limit to how creative you can be Keep in mind that it s better to decorate just one side If you go with a 3D design make sure you have a flat edge on the back for your magnetic tape Once you re finished decorating cut a small section of magnetic tape to stick to the back of your art work If your piece is big you may need to use a few pieces Because the tape is rolled it has a slight curve to it so smaller pieces lay more flat You can get magnetic tape at any craft store as well as most hardware stores How will you get creative with this project Perhaps a magnetic calendar or parts of a face to move around You could even cut out trees and bushes to arrange into scenes The possibilities are endless If you made this craft with us or at home we would love to see it Share your photos with us on Facebook Twitter or Instagram with discoverthedixon and familystudio Family Studio is a free drop in art program for all ages It happens the first Saturday of every month from 10 30am 12 30pm Come create with us Florence Brem Children s Program Coordinator Posted by Chantal Drake at 4 04 PM
