  • ICFA Services — Dumbarton Oaks
    in form date name affiliation and collection s used ICFA Reading Room Rules All archival collections can only be consulted in the ICFA Reading Room Make sure your hands are clean before handling the collections Only an ICFA staff member is allowed to retrieve materials from the stacks Researchers are not allowed to browse the shelves Do not bend fold lean on mark or otherwise damage any of the archival materials in any way Items should remain flat on the table at all times Wear gloves and always handle photographic materials by their edges do not touch the image surface If items are in Mylar sleeves or folders do not remove them from their containers Keep all items in the order in which they were received do not rearrange items Use an out card to mark an item s place when removing it from a folder or box Researchers may photograph materials for study purposes only free of charge Users may also elect to use ICFA s reproduction services Whether for study or publication purposes processing and or reproduction fees may apply When archival items are in need of preservation please alert an ICFA staff immediately Do not attempt to repair any of the items Notify an ICFA staff if you need to leave the ICFA Reading Room or when you are done with the materials Materials should not be left unattended Your requested item s may be held for your use on a subsequent day s It is the responsibility of the researcher to obtain copyright clearance to publish or otherwise reproduce or distribute archival materials Whenever possible ICFA will provide the contact information of copyright holders For Study Purposes Self Service Reproductions Self service reproduction or photography is allowed for onsite researchers and for study purposes only free of charge ICFA reserves the right to approve self service photography depending on the condition of the materials A digital camera and a copy stand provided by ICFA are available upon request Researchers may also use their own digital cameras for the same purpose ICFA staff may request that researchers provide copies of the digital photographs they take of archival materials All images provided for study purposes may not be published redistributed reproduced modified or otherwise used for personal or corporate gain without prior written consent from Dumbarton Oaks or the copyright holder Services provided by ICFA When requesting images for study purposes please submit an Online Image Request Form Provide a detailed description of the image you are requesting including any negative or accession number s if known and the publication information If the image is found in a publication please supply the citation information including the figure and plate numbers in order to facilitate your request For study purposes there is no processing and or reproduction fees for requests up to 25 items images or pages However turnaround time for orders will depend on staff availability and the existing queue of digitization requests For larger orders more than

  • The Bliss Album of Garden Photographs — Dumbarton Oaks
    photograph as well as occasional dating and identification annotations The Bliss Album of Garden Photographs is presumed to be a set of garden images assembled by Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss It may be their personal album or possibly the album that was sent to Mildred Bliss s mother Anna Barnes Bliss in California It is known from correspondence that the Blisses had garden photograph albums sent to various people For example on February 22 1935 Beatrix Farrand wrote her aunt Edith Wharton Mildred s attachment to Dumbarton Oaks is really almost like an attachment to her own child and her pleasure was in consequence great when she knew you had liked the album of Oaks pictures which she had sent you In the Bliss album the photograph numbers establish groupings of images from various parts of the garden and possibly may indicate a preferred progression for visiting the various garden areas Seventeen photographs are missing from the Bliss Album of Garden Photographs numbers 107 151 152 161 177 187 221 280 284 293 299 and 303 and it is not known whether these have been lost after the album was unbound or were not included in the original album Exhibit Sections South Lawn Main House and Orangery 101 116 Beech Terrace 117 122 Green Garden 123 128 Swimming Pool 129 139 Tennis Court 140 144 Star Garden 145 147 North Vista 148 155 Copse 156 160 Bowling Green 162 164 Urn Terrace 165 174 Rose Garden 175 186 Fountain Terrace 188 193 Arbor Terrace 194 198 Goat Trail and Orchard 199 201 East Lawn and Terrior Column 202 209 Lovers Lane Pool 210 215 Mélisande s Allée 216 217 Herbaceous Border and Mr and Mrs Yew 218 229 Flower and Kitchen Gardens and Grape Arbor 230 233 Box Walk

  • Bliss–Tyler Correspondence — Dumbarton Oaks
    also concerned various important people including Bernard Berenson and Edith Wharton and world events including the first and second world wars The majority of the extant correspondence was given by Mildred Barnes Bliss to William Tyler Royall Tyler s son In the mid 1970s William Tyler who was then Director of Dumbarton Oaks and Walter Whitehill began work on a publication of this correspondence For unknown reasons this project was not completed and all existing materials for the publication were an unrestricted gift of William Tyler to the Harvard University Archives HUGFP 38 6 boxes 1 5 in 1977 and 1979 In 2008 Robert S Nelson Robert Lehman Professor at Yale University and at that time a Senior Fellow at Dumbarton Oaks and James N Carder Archivist and House Collection Manager at Dumbarton Oaks returned to this correspondence project They completed a digital transcription of all known letters which they are in the process of publishing with commentary and annotations The transcribed and annotated correspondence can be found here Document Actions Print this Share Navigation Library Archives Library Rare Book Collection Garden Archives Image Collections and Fieldwork Archives Dumbarton Oaks Archives Architectural Plans and Drawings The Bliss Album of Garden

    doaks org Preferred Citation French Company Correspondence and Related Documents Dumbarton Oaks Archives Courtesy of Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection Washington D C HISTORICAL NOTE An art dealership based in New York City P W French Company Inc commonly known as French Company bought and sold decorative arts as well as paintings and sculpture For over half a century after Mitchell Samuels 1880 1959 co founded the firm in 1907 in New York French Company was considered one of the largest art dealerships in the world Under Mitchell Samuels directorship French Company worked with many wealthy American collectors eager to develop collections in decorative art objects and paintings of European provenance Among the firm s clients were J Paul Getty William Randolph Hearst J P Morgan the Vanderbilts and the Rockefellers During this period the firm also served as agents and decorators for the Huntingtons Fricks Mellons and Astors The French Company building on East 57th Street housed more than fifty showrooms eight fireproof vaults and a ten thousand volume art reference library Spencer Samuels Mitchell s son took over as president of French Company in the 1950s During his presidency Spencer Samuels collected sales records from major worldwide art auctions dating to as far back as the 1700s in order to provide complete documentation for the artworks the firm sold After his father s death Spencer sold the firm to City Investing in 1959 and went to work for Duveen Brothers In 1968 City Investing sold the firm to Martin Zimet Much of the stock of decorative arts objects that remained at French Company was sold at auction in 1968 The firm continued under the same name after the 1950s but with a changing inventory and clientele The above taken from the finding aid for French Company records 1910 1998 Bulk 1950 1960 Getty Research Institute Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss were clients of French Company from at least 1920 After the transfer of Dumbarton Oaks to Harvard University in 1940 household furnishings and some art were consigned to French Company for sale SCOPE AND CONTENT The French and Company Correspondence and Related Documents collection contains correspondence inventories appraisals and some photographs pertaining to the acquisition and sale of decorative art objects by Mildred and Robert Woods Bliss and by Dumbarton Oaks These objects include several important tapestries and antique furniture The collection also reflects the financial difficulties and eventual reorganization of French and Company and the subsequent liquidation of objects held on consignment for Dumbarton Oaks List of abbreviations ABB Anna Barnes Bliss mother of Mildred Barnes Bliss DO Dumbarton Oaks EHB Elizabeth H Bland Registrar and Assistant for the Collection 1946 58 Assistant Curator for the Byzantine Collection 1964 65 Dumbarton Oaks ER Ellis Russell Robert Woods Bliss s secretary in New York HP Hiram H Parke co founder of the auction house Parke Bernet Galleries JT John S Thacher first director of Dumbarton Oaks 1940 1969 MBB Mildred Barnes Bliss MS Mitchell Samuels Co founder
