  • Worlds of Byzantium — Dumbarton Oaks
notions of its character and parameters In 1980 Dumbarton Oaks hosted the now famous East of Byzantium symposium which resulted in an era defining volume of scholarly articles under the same name edited by N Garsoïan T Mathews and R Thomson This gathering of experts in various eastern Christian traditions put Dumbarton Oaks at the forefront of the emergent conversation about Byzantium s eastern neighbors Today the medieval Mediterranean within which Byzantium was situated appears much more complex and fluid than what was envisioned thirty years ago New archaeological historical and literary research has made this fluidity abundantly clear and has opened up new questions about the formation of identity in the empire as the relationship between the metropolis and the provinces fluctuated What was Byzantium Where was it What religions did its people practice and which languages did they speak The 2016 Symposium will examine the very foundations of what we think Byzantium was Greek speaking Orthodox Christian Constantinopolitan and attempt to reset scholars expectations about what counts as Byzantine Nevertheless just as East of Byzantium transformed the expectations of a generation with regard to the value of eastern Christianity for medieval studies we believe that Byzantium itself however it is defined can play a more central role on the world historical stage if Byzantinists are willing to let it be decentered and reconstituted for the next generation This symposium will argue that a polycentric and interconnected Byzantium only strengthens Byzantine Studies as a discipline by making it indispensable to other fields in order fully to understand essential aspects of the medieval Middle East or the medieval West one must also understand Byzantium Add event to calendar vCal iCal Document Actions Print this Share Navigation Studies Programs Fellowships and Grants Byzantine Studies Staff Current and Former Senior Fellows Current

  • Landscape and the Academy — Dumbarton Oaks
universities go global and digital History provides numerous examples of pedagogical landscapes the monastic style cloisters that provided at least one model for academic settings implied ideas about the collective and contemplative life while the academical village at the University of Virginia where students and instructors lived in close proximity to each other and to the library near gardens that produced some of their food provided an early instance of self sufficiency and perhaps even sustainability More recently land grant universities were established to teach applied agriculture But how valid are these pedagogical objectives today Are universities still cultivating self conscious relationships between their landscapes and their academic missions Are these landscapes beyond their applications in curriculum still being used to foster new thinking in landscape design aesthetics environmental ethics or community history Universities might be seen as models of density walkability and sustainability but how effective are they at transmitting these lessons to their students or to the larger public If one were to imagine an ideal campus today what would it look like and what would people learn from it Furthermore thinking globally what are the models for universities outside of Europe and North America As campus forms are exported to the developing world how relevant and usable are they And how are universities dealing with the challenges of preservation as student populations expand uses change surroundings develop and neighboring communities evolve Are there options for preservation beside resistance or capitulation Can universities become models of adaptability Looking beyond specific instances of campus planning and design we seek a larger understanding of the place of university landscapes in their academic and urban communities Speakers Peter Alagona University of California Santa Barbara Hilary Ballon New York University Joseph Claghorn Leibniz Universität Hannover John Davis Harvard University Burak Erdim North
