not have to wait until you re 18 to register to give the gift of life Ohioans can register as a donor when they receive their Temporary Instruction Permit at age 15½ though a guardian may revoke or amend a registration at the time of death Religions support donation Most religions including Catholicism Protestantism Islam and the four major branches of Judaism support organ donation as a selfless gift of charity If you have any question about your faith and how it relates to your status as a donor consult a member of your clergy Doctors Save lives It s a myth that doctors will not work as hard to save your life if they know you are a registered donor If a doctor were to do less in any circumstance he or she would likely lose their medical license The truth is when a person is taken to a hospital doctors will do everything in their power to help the patient and those doctors are not concerned about registry status and have nothing to do with the donation process Giving the gift of life is free A donor s family will not be charged for any medical costs associated with donation All costs are incurred by the organ tissue recovery agency Medical conditions should not concern you Pre existing medical conditions should not keep you from registering as a donor You might not be able to donate all eight organs but any donation could help to save and enhance the lives of others With medical technology constantly advancing it s important to let the doctors decide what organs and tissues can be used There is no discrimination Organs are matched through the United Network of Organ Sharing based on body size blood type medical urgency and geographic location as

the couple Rob needed to be taken to the hospital immediately Shocked and scared Rhonda drove Rob to the hospital where they learned he had dangerously high blood sugar levels and he was diagnosed with diabetes Diabetes ran in his family but he was a big active guy who never suspected he was sick says Rhonda Rhonda supported Rob as he made all the changes doctors told him to including changing his diet losing weight and taking preventative medications The disease appeared to be manageable and the couple began a family with daughter Maiya and talked of having more children Unfortunately the disease was relentless Rob was forced to begin dialysis for his increasing kidney trouble and eventually he entered end stage renal failure and was placed on the waiting list for a kidney transplant Doctors warned Rhonda and Rob that the wait for a kidney transplant could be long up to five years While waiting for a transplant doctors increased Rob s dialysis treatments to three days a week It s wonderful that dialysis exists to help support kidney function until people can get transplants but it is no way to live says Rhonda Once an involved loving father he became a passive parent too sick or too tired to enjoy school programs and activities with his daughter Our hopes for a larger family were put on hold Tell your story Has your life been touched by organ eye or tissue donation either as a donor family transplant candidate family or as a recipient Tell us your story Despite his deteriorating health Rob s hope for a transplant never faltered Even in his final days he told Rhonda he was sure his health would turn around and a kidney would become available Sadly in February 2012 Rob passed away
