of the hall whilst the ACO perform It s incredibly moving particularly the images of the soldiers taken in photo studios to be sent home for their families The youth of some of these young men is truly horrifying Special mention should also go to the deviser Nigel Jamieson who has perfectly realised Neil Armfield s vision for the performance The juxtaposition of the classical pieces with Turkish traditional arrangements and Carl Vine s modern pieces including the use of actors to voice both the Turkish and Australian soldiers feelings works wonderfully It s moving without being mawkish And the voice of Taryn Fiebig is wonderous By the time we get to the final piece of the night Vaughan William s Lark Ascending the concert hall is the stillest i ve ever experienced Through the entire performance there is not a single cough nor rustling of a restless audience member Everyone is enthralled The true genius of the production is realised in this piece for you hear it as if it s new The silence as the lights go down and the sound of Richard Tognetti s violin fades feels like an eternity before the applause erupted The concert has travelled to all the capital cities and has just one concert left in Sydney Friday lunchtime Concerts are at Angel Place s City Recital Hall a bonus for those of us who often escort the aged or infirm to such events as all seats are accessible via a lift As someone who doesn t normally bother with the more expensive seating for classical concerts and despite the acoustics at the City Recital Hall being excellent even if you sit in row Z I would recommend going for a more expensive seat on one of the lower levels in order to

  • Roy Jackson Retrospective | 89.7 Eastside FM
mentor eventually establishing him in a studio on the South Coast near Thirroull south of Sydney where Jackson began his life long love of the Australian bush Roy Jackson Alongaline Jackson s long term studio was in Wedderburn near Campbelltown where he lived from 1975 until his death in 2013 He lived amidst his beloved bush amongst other artists who painted the landscape including John Peart and Elisabeth Cummings His dialogue with the landscape was a constant in his life and he took his sketchbooks with him in all his many travels and was constantly drawing and painting the landscapes he saw and recording his impressions throughout his life These sketchbooks form an integral and fascinating part of the retrospective exhibition at the SH Ervin Gallery and provide a unique insight into his process Jackson s work was not derived from his sketchbooks as templates however but was spontaneously created by an improvisational process of mark making closely related to the process by which jazz musicians make music by building lines as they progress and each moment and movement inspires the next one Jackson s influences were many including Greek and Roman philosophers and music The poetry of TS Eliot and Aboriginal art were also influences and inspirations throughout his working life His artistic influences included Ian Fairweather and Tony Tuckson as well as French artist Jean Dubuffet and Dutch American Willem de Kooning Jackson s work could include abstracted writing combined with textures pulsations and rhythms Colleague and friend John Peart described Jackson s art as an ebb and flow of abstraction and representation thriving in symbiosis Jackson s final masterpieces created in the last year of his life are on display at the SH Ervin Gallery They are the Clinamen series envisaged as a series of 6 large

  • Local Orchestras Thrive | 89.7 Eastside FM
is fortunate to have the Woollahra Philharmonic Orchestra and the Eastern Sydney Chamber Orchestra Choir These two orchestras perform in some rather exquisite churches which only adds to the performance However from experience I would suggest taking a cushion even with the cushions churches provide the pews can get a bit uncomfortable after a while The rest of Sydney is also well serviced however the only two groups I ve had the pleasure of seeing perform are the Balmain Sinfonia and the Mosman Orchestra The Balmain Sinfonia have a remarkably dedicated conductor in Gary Stavrou They perform at Macquarie University whilst the Mosman Orchestra perform at the Mosman Art Gallery The Eastern Sydney Chamber Orchestra Choir are performing this weekend doing a Mendelssohn special which should be delightful Alternatively if you re north of the bridge the Mosman Orchestra will be celebrating their 40th anniversary The following weekend the Woollahra Philharmonic will be performing Borodin Mozart and Schubert whilst for those in the west the Balmain Sinfonia will be performing a concert focusing on French composers The Woollahra Philharmonic Orchestra performing Pavane last year Not only do you get a wonderful performance somewhere close to home refreshments are normally provided for a gold coin donation If none of the below concerts fit into your timetable and you work in the city get out and about There are a number of lunchtime concerts performed in churches around the CBD as well as at the Conservatorium and City Recital Hall One final advantage of many of these groups is that you ll find parking and access to be easier than many of the venues in the city Eastern Sydney Chamber Orchestra Choir perform four times a year at St Mary s Anglican Chuch Birrell St opp Waverley College Map Sunday 22nd of

  • GREEN – GREENER – ST PATRICK’S DAY | 89.7 Eastside FM
was not even from Ireland his parents were Roman citizens living in England What brought him to Ireland was more a misfortune than purpose when at the age of 16 he was kidnapped by Irish people selling him as a slave The following years he worked as a shepherd until he could finally escape at the age of 22 From then on he spent his life living in a monastery growing closer to God St Patrick s Day is well known hyped all over the world nevertheless there are still a few things we tend to mix up a little That St Patrick s Day is not only about drinking and being dressed in green is not the only misunderstanding Furthermore the real colour of St Patrick is actually blue not green as commonly believed St Patrick was initially drawn wearing blue vests considering early artworks The colour green was associated with Ireland later presumably because of its massive green countryside On top of that the shamrock doesn t stand for faith love and hope but for the trinity of the Father the Son and the holy spirit St Patrick used the shamrock to symbolize that all of these thee elements are separated yet one and the same Next Tuesday we can certainly expect lots of shamrocks decorating the city but that s not all Sydney has to offer St Patrick s Day will see Australia s most passionate Irish representing the Celtic culture Expect wandering through the streets of the city centre a nice place to go is famous Irish pub P J O Brien s that serves traditional Irish breakfast and lunch bringing it to the maximum with Irish Dance performances Be inspired by upcoming St Patrick s Day next Tuesday an occasion full of fun tradition and
