    year around December during which these warm waters events tended to occur The term El Niño refers to the large scale ocean atmosphere climate interaction linked to a periodic warming in sea surface temperatures across the central and east central Equatorial Pacific Typical El Niño effects are likely to develop over North America during the upcoming winter season Those include warmer than average temperatures over western and central Canada and over the western and northern United States Wetter than average conditions are likely over portions of the U S Gulf Coast and Florida while drier than average conditions can be expected in the Ohio Valley and the Pacific Northwest The presence of El Niño can significantly influence weather patterns ocean conditions and marine fisheries across large portions of the globe for an extended period of time Source National Ocean Service Sandbag Supplies East Valley Water District is making sandbag supplies available to local residents Empty sanbags and fill material are available to District customers beginning December 16 2015 As a reminder customers will need to bring their own shovels and tools Items will be accessible 24 hours a day seven days a week at two District locations District Headquarters 31111

    and other public officials Grant Strategy East Valley Water District has been very successful at securing and completing grant funded projects Staff expects to build on experience and adopt a Grant Strategy that incorporates federal state and regional funding opportunities These opportunities may include competitive grants federal appropriations formula based funding and per capita allocations to reduce rate payer expenses Looking forward EVWD has also focused on the following key strategic initiatives Provide a safe and reliable water supply Create an environment conducive to more efficient and effective public service build headquarters Enhance district resource efforts improve human and physical resources Develop a district brand and improve community involvement local and regional opportunities Recommended Grant Strategy East Valley Water District will continue to pursue federal and state funding to establish new programs or enhance existing programs that promote water supply reliability and reduce cost pressures in the water and wastewater collection systems for the benefit of EVWD rate payers After reviewing the demographics and resources of EVWD in combination with understanding the district s needs several grant opportunities from federal state and private grant making agencies were identified It is important to keep in mind that many of these programs
