  • partners willingness to jump in and do their part resulting in mutually beneficial relationships that we hope will endure for years to come The Earth Conservation Corps led the staff of Forest City Enterprises on a community day to install wetland plants at bald eagle flats our wetland classroom on the banks of Diamond Teague Park On September 15 2006 the staff of BB T bank and Earth Conservation Corps planted 900 wetland plants and 20 Bald Cypress trees in the river s riparian buffer zone and removed eight bags of trash six tires and other debris from the river Executives from the Timberland Company also joined us on the river for a day of service and proved the meaning of our motto that conservation begins with the boots on your feet Thanks to a grant from the Summit Foundation the Anacostia RIVERKEEPER spearheaded the 2006 Capital River Relief an intensive month of river clean ups throughout the month of April Co hosted by Earth Conservation Corps and Living Lands Waters a national river restoration organization the three week project galvanized more than 400 volunteers in environmental service to remove trash and debris On Earth Day alone April 22 Earth

  • products reach nearly 500 000 viewers through public television outlets and distribution through school and community groups Youth Media Arts Corps members then take the skills they learn into area high schools including Eastern High School Anacostia High School and Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools to teach media techniques to their peers The five week modules of four hours a week incorporate DCPS 11th grade standards for language arts social studies and technology Important expansions of Youth Media Arts initiatives include Corps member led intensive high school workshops to create new public service announcements PSAs on environmental and social justice issues for local and national broadcast The program is led by director Daryl Wallace The drive of youth leaders in the Earth Conservation Corps to rescue their community is undeniable Yet the dual challenges of poverty and violence that plague Corps members daily lives are truly daunting A stunning snapshot of inner city life in America today is the fact that 23 Corps members have been murdered since 1992 These untimely deaths received scant media attention but Corps members through our core Youth Media Arts Program picked up video cameras to ensure that these important stories were documented and not
