  • What Does the Ecology Center Offer Youth? | Ecology Center
    BASIL stands for the Bay Area Seed Interchange Library It was created in part as an alternative to the use of genetically modified seeds by diversifying Bay Area gardens with various open pollinated seeds Located in the Ecology Center seeds are free to borrow but you are asked to replace them with seeds harvested after you grow your crop If you don t have a green thumb but want to stay involved you could also help keep the seed library organized ecologycenter org basil Help Desk Want to start your own drought tolerant garden or get involved in a local project Need information for an upcoming research project Bring us any and all of your environmental questions We won t write your paper for you but we ll give you plenty of sources to draw from ecologycenter org information Library Did you know the Ecology Center has its very own library Take a gander at our collection of books and videos you might be surprised with what you find We have documentaries how to guides reference and more A membership is required to borrow items for up to two weeks but a membership can easily be earned with five volunteer hours see volunteer for more info ecologycenter org library Farmers Markets There is no better place to cultivate a love for healthy eating than at a farmers market The Ecology Center sponsors three year round Berkeley Farmers Markets that run on Tuesday Thursday and Saturday Food is sold directly from local farms often by the farmers themselves and every once in awhile you ll find a cooking demo while strolling through the market Through YEA you can work shifts at the farmers markets some vendors and farmers will also hire seasonally to help run their booths Additionally if you re an aspiring musician you can liven up the market by signing up to busk Times and locations can be found in the link below http ecologycenter org fm Farm Fresh Choice In addition to the lovely Ecology Center farmers markets we also provide local neighborhoods with fresh produce at wholesale prices directly from farmers You can find us every Tuesday from 3 30 6 30 P M at the Frances Albrier Community Center at San Pablo Park 2800 Park St Berkeley If you like what you see and want to contribute fill out the volunteer form to help us out ecologycenter org ffc EcoHouse Located in North Berkeley the EcoHouse is a demonstration home and garden that offers tours classes and workshops that are great for all levels of environmentalists Learn about greywater systems an assortment of plants rooftop gardens and more Volunteer days are also provided to help maintain our edible and native garden plants ecologycenter org ecohouse Store Shop locally for eco friendly household goods and gifts We provide everything from cookbooks to body products to plastic free lunch supplies to holiday cards Members receive a discount ecologycenter org store Jobs Binder Up on the top shelf of

    inspiration to others who are attempting to take on the deep pocketed beverage industry to improve their children s health says Xavier Morales of Latinos United for a Healthy California Berkeley won by winning over hearts neighbor to neighbor house by house street by street Berkeley vs Big Soda is a great primer for anyone interested in working to protect their children s health With Berkeley vs Big Soda the Ecology Center aims to show that soda taxes are a reasonable and achievable approach to the problem We also hope to energize communities on the verge of launching their own campaigns and support others in the public health field who are grappling with how to stem the diabetes epidemic Diabetes and other diet related illnesses are destroying our kids health and sugary drinks are driving this trend says Ecology Center Executive Director Martin Bourque With this film we want to show that communities can fight back and win even against a corporate Goliath In November 2014 Berkeley became the first US city to pass a law taxing soda and other sugary drinks In the first year Berkeley s soda tax has generated over 1 5 million for community nutrition and health efforts including school gardening programs The Ecology Center has reached out to local state and national partners in the public health and political advocacy realm to circulate Berkeley vs Big Soda widely sharing it via social network channels blogs websites and email lists Already the buzz is growing with organizations from British Columbia to Texas promoting the movie Just on Facebook the film has reached over 8 5K views in its first 24 hours The film made by nationally recognized filmmaker Helen De Michiel is hosted on www BerkeleyVsBigSoda com Once the active website for the Yes on D

    will acclimate to specific areas over time By growing them out we weave the stories of our lives and seeds into an unending chain of community tradition and history If we can create a local abundance of fertile and non engineered seed we can participate in the International Solidarity Seed Project by donating our surplus to communities around the world that have difficulty accessing viable open pollinated seed How does the seed library work Local gardeners and farmers can check out seeds with the agreement that they attempt to grow them out and return some seeds of the next generation at the end of the season View the following video to learn how the library works Why save seeds In the last three decades the majority of the world s family owned seed companies have been bought out by multinationals such as the Monsanto and Novartis corporations These companies are not interested in creating sustainable food systems and communities They are busy replacing carefully bred strains of vegetables and flowers with their own hybrids and patented varieties Hybrids don t produce viable seed and the seed from patented varieties cannot legally be collected and used Instead the seeds must be bought fresh each year forcing gardeners and farmers to purchase from corporate seed sources annually Genetic engineering enables life science corporations to control plant traits by programming the seeds Monsanto s infamous implementation of trait control technology is often referred to as the Terminator seed Terminator seeds yield plants that produce no viable seed of ther own Trait controlled plants that breed with traditional varieties may pass on engineered traits to the offspring If non evolved plant varieties are permitted to squeeze out natural and or carefully cultivated varieties seed saving may nearly disappear Our nourishment or hunger might then

    on legal and accounting concerns As a fiscally sponsored project a group can use the Ecology Center s 501 c 3 nonprofit status for fundraising purposes In addition the Ecology Center provides insurance and a wide range of administrative services that allow a fledgling project to focus on their programmatic goals while meeting their legal requirements Projects often seek fiscal sponsorship as a means to raise the profile of their work through affiliation with an established organization with a solid reputation Administrative Services the Ecology Center Offers The Ecology Center charges an administrative fee to its fiscally sponsored projects of 10 15 In return the Ecology Center provides financial management including accounts payable accounts receivable bookkeeping monthly financial reporting sales tax filings annual financial audit and IRS 990 filing We maintain our 501 c 3 status with the IRS and the State of California and fulfill HR functions such as payroll services administration of group medical and dental plans accrual and tracking of sick and vacation time and management of 401K annual W4 1099 preparation EDD wage garnishment workers comp insurance personnel policies COBRA and EEO The Ecology Center provides insurance for all our fiscally sponsored projects including general liability property liability automotive if necessary directors and officers insurance ERISA and employee dishonesty insurance Lastly the Ecology Center promotes the work of our fiscally sponsored projects in a variety of ways and provides meeting space when needed The Fiscal Sponsorship Relationship Fiscally sponsored projects are able to receive charitable donations and grants available only to tax exempt organizations The Ecology Center is legally and financially responsible for all the Ecology Center s fiscally sponsored projects and activities The Ecology Center s fiscally sponsored projects are nonprofits and have 501 c 3 tax exempt status All Ecology Center projects abide by strict federal regulations governing nonprofits such as limits on lobbying and political activities and compliance with the Ecology Center s personnel policies The Ecology Center Board of Directors is responsible for all legal taxation and regulatory issues for projects Projects often also have their own advisory boards which are designated caretakers of their project s mission responsible for strategic planning program oversight fundraising outreach and assistance to and review of the project director Projects are responsible for their own fundraising the management of their work plan and the hiring firing and supervision of their own staff The project owns the copyrights intellectual property and trademarks that derive from their work Eligibility Requirements for Fiscal Sponsorship The most fundamental eligibility requirement is that the mission and activities of your project are in alignment with the Ecology Center s mission which is to promote environmentally and socially responsible practices through programs that educate demonstrate and provide direct services Applicants must have an operations and fundraising plan The ideal candidate will have raised a minimum of 25 000 although we do make exceptions The Ecology Center does not provide fiscal sponsorship to individuals for profit entities and projects with international activities but no
