  • PIRG Energy Service Corps - Stanford students teach 400 local youth about energy, the environment
the lights on and to power their homes We know that an important way to tackle these problems is to improve energy efficiency Given that buildings currently consume nearly 40 of the nation s total energy making our buildings more efficient is a large part of that CALPIRG Energy Service Corps engages people around the simple things that they can do to reduce air pollution by saving energy in their own home Stanford Professor Jon Krosnick s research on public attitudes towards climate change has shown that when people believe that something can be done to effectively mitigate climate change they are more likely to ascribe national seriousness to climate change and have greater support for national policy action on the issue One of the program s key activities is to work with K 12 students so they can learn about energy conservation early in their lives and take the lessons home to their families The lessons are based on curriculum developed by the U S Department of Energy and are tailored to the age group and class size A pre and post quiz is given to assess the lesson s impact It s incredible to know that more than half of the class of students improve from the pre to post test knowing that students are learning how to become more energy efficient at a young age is something I take pride in says Justin Sao a freshman and Energy Service Corps intern Stanford s chapter of CALPIRG Energy Service Corps has the goal of teaching 2 400 local K 12 students about energy conservation this year Additionally CALPIRG Energy Service Corps brings education right to residents doorsteps by conducting home energy surveys The Stanford chapter s goal is to complete 500 surveys this year interns and volunteers have
