    where God has sent you to learn grow and minister for His Kingdom Before joining Enon or any faith community evaluate where you are spiritually learn about the church you are considering and ask God to reveal to you if He wants you to join this branch of Zion Your class today will help you learn more about what it means to belong to a Baptist church and also what we at Enon believe that God has given to us as our mission and vision As stated earlier our New Members Process is designed to help you begin the journey from membership to discipleship Your initial classes will provide an overview of salvation and church membership that will help you understand the faith commitment that you have made The remaining classes are design to help you learn to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ There are four ways to be received into membership at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church as a new believer in Christ as a believer who for whatever reason has not had a church home Christian Experience with a letter from one s former church acknowledging a transfer from one congregation to another or under Watch Care which means that you are uniting temporarily with the Enon congregation but intend to eventually return to your home church This often happens with college students or persons temporarily relocated by their employers New believers are expected to submit to baptism by immersion you will learn more about this shortly All believers who are accepted into the congregation are extended the Right Hand of Fellowship The concept of the Right Hand of Fellowship originates in the book of Acts when Paul and Barnabas met the original apostles and were accepted by them as genuine followers of Jesus Christ Paul describes

    human trafficking in Cape Town South Africa Each year hundreds of Enon members self fund missions trips to sites in the United States the Caribbean and Africa The members of Enon generously support Dr Waller s work as an evangelist and artist as well as the First Lady s advocacy for victims of human trafficking They demonstrate wonderfully how God s love can greatly impact a community as one collective effort Progressive Ministry in Changing Times 1950 1974 On Easter Sunday in April 1950 Reverend William B Toland preached his first sermon as Pastor of Enon Under his spiritual guidance and dynamic leadership membership continued to increase several auxiliaries were organized a Moeller organ was installed central air conditioning for the main sanctuary was acquired and a wing to the Church with approximately twenty rooms and a new kitchen were added In 1950 Reverend Rena Thompson became the first female preacher and associate pastor at Enon In 1952 Reverend Toland established the Negro Achievement Program to celebrate the contributions of African Americans to American society and to inspire African American adult and youth achievement In the words of Reverend Toland his goal was that each Negro in true painstaking steps walking in his own field keeps ever plodding until he arrives to a place of distinction and glorifies his God who made him his nation that sustains him and his race of which he is a part In response to the turbulent conditions in the mid 1960s Reverend Toland changed the focus of the Negro Achievement Program in 1966 from one of achievement to one of togetherness of all Americans The program included art exhibits music talent programs and multicultural guests and speakers After the death of Reverend Toland on April 4 1974 Reverend Noah Carter served as Interim Pastor and the Church continued to prosper The Beginning of a Rich Legacy 1876 1912 In 1875 Reverend J D Brooks presided over a Sunday School class in a frame building that was then known as 5 West Coulter Street In August of 1875 the small group of Christians convened a council of representatives from area churches to explore the feasibility of organizing a Baptist church at the site After prayerful consideration on August 26 1876 the council recommended that the group move forward with their plan to become an organized church On September 21 1876 Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church was recognized by the council at a public service and with seven members became the first African American Baptist Church in the Germantown section of Philadelphia and the fifty fifth African American church in Philadelphia Named for the place where people came to be baptized by John the Baptist for more than a century Enon has been guided by its foundational mission of reaching people for the cause of Christ Enon was the fifty fifth African American Church in Philadelphia Its founder Reverend James D Brooks was called as the Church s first Pastor on November 15 1876 The cornerstone for

    studies at Enon and the Hour of Power lunch hour Bible study in Center City Philadelphia Prayer opportunities include two prayer meetings each day at the church locations and a daily early morning prayer line led by Dr Waller and the Prayer Ministry team Dr Waller draws on his love for people to shape God s vision for Enon A Place Where People Encounter God With over 75 ministries that focus on discipleship fellowship missions evangelism and worship Dr Waller s arms stretch wide to touch the needs of people who come to church and those who do not Some of the innovative impactful ministries that Dr Waller has developed at Enon include Sexual Abuse Survivors Domestic Abuse Survivors and Cancer Survivors Enon regularly hosts various health and wellness events which offer AIDS testing and other critical health screening Dr Waller has a passion for the development of youth Enon utilizes a majority of its land surrounding the church as a big backyard for the churches youth ministry to participate in various competitive teams such as cheerleading football basketball baseball track and soccer Additionally among other youth focused ministries Dr Waller provides direction to Enon s Scholarship Ministry which provides scholarships and stipends to dozens of students each year Community Outreach Dr Waller s community outreach extends far beyond the walls of Enon He previously has carried his teaching ministry to the airwaves by providing a daily Inspirational Moment to two Philadelphia radio stations www wdas com and www power99 com He continues to carry the Gospel message through social media Responding to the specific needs of the local community in 1997 Dr Waller led Enon s membership to establish the Enon Coulter Community Development Corporation ECCDC a non profit entity that provides educational and support services to children and families Today under Dr Waller s leadership the ECCDC sponsors a Christian summer sports camp and a Christian bookstore Recently Dr Waller has taken an active role in the Philadelphia School District restructuring As a voice for the children of Philadelphia Enon has hosted town hall meetings and sponsored other efforts to support the education of our children Historically Dr Waller and Enon have put feet to the Gospel by assisting in the renovation of the Germantown High School library and for several years sponsoring the music program of the Martin Luther King High School In his spare time Dr Waller is the assistant wrestling coach for the Martin Luther King High School Dr Waller is involved with numerous service organizations and has been awarded countless honors for his leadership throughout the Philadelphia area Currently he serves as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and Eastern University Among his many honors Dr Waller has received the Young Minister s Award from Upscale Magazine and the Most Influential African American Award from the Philadelphia Tribune International Outreach Enon has partnered with various sister churches on the mission field Currently Dr Waller serves

    in 2005 through research for the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention combatting the issue became a passion as well She immediately began participating in anti human trafficking efforts domestically and internationally Ellyn is an active member of Philadelphia Anti Human Trafficking Coalition and serves as Co Chair of the Religion Subcommittee Internationally she regularly participates in rescue and restoration efforts in Italy and South Africa At Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church Ellyn Jo leads the women s ministry Sisters in Christ which seeks to develop and strengthen the spiritual lives of women through monthly Bible studies quarterly fellowship gatherings annual retreats and various outreach opportunities In 2011 she lead the Enon family in establishing an anti human trafficking ministry She s My Sister which seeks to raise awareness about the issue of human trafficking This ministry which focuses on advocacy awareness and outreach supports a local drop in center participates in street outreach and advocates on behalf of victims of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation In October of 2015 She s My Sister hosted its inaugural Human Trafficking Awareness 5K Walk Run to raise funds for the development of a trauma informed transitional residential program for young women exiting The Life and aging out of the Child Protective Services system Ellyn Jo is a member of the Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church Education Ministry additionally she serves on The City School Board Education Committee Chair Community College of Philadelphia s Foundation Board is an Ambassador of Hope for the Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at Children s Hospital of Philadelphia and Co Chairs the United Negro College Fund s Delaware Valley Women of Faith for Education Afternoon Tea Ellyn Jo is also a member of the Philadelphia Chapter of the Links Incorporated and serves as the organization s National Human Trafficking Subcommittee
