  • With New DRBC Director Announced, Rep. Holt & Environmental Allies Call for Permanent Fracking Moratorium for the Delaware River Watershed | Environment New Jersey
support for the DRBC which despite his urging has continued to uphold the moratorium on gas drilling in the watershed The moratorium on gas drilling in the Delaware River watershed has been in place since May 2010 although plans were made in November 2011 to put out regulations to open the watershed to gas drilling but due to strong public pressure the area remains free from drilling and the moratorium in place We are glad that the moratorium is still in place protecting the drinking water for the 15 million people who depend on the Delaware River Basin We are concerned that political pressure from Governors Corbett and Christie could open up the Delaware Watershed to fracking threatening our open space and our drinking water With the change in leadership at the Commission the public should be concerned that billions of gallons of toxic waste could threaten the River that belongs to all of us not the gas companies The moratorium must be made permanent said Jeff Tittel Director NJ Sierra Club With the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling that mandates all members of Pennsylvania government from the local level to the regional to the state level have an obligation to consider and protect the rights of present and future generations to pure water clean air and a healthy environment it is clear that permanent protection for the Delaware River watershed is the only way the DRBC and its Pennsylvania Commissioner can honor this obligation said Maya van Rossum the Delaware Riverkeeper We hope Mr Tambini will recognize that as a public servant working to protect water resources in Pennsylvania that he too is subject to this obligation in his new role as the head of the DRBC and make permanent the prohibition on shale gas development in our Delaware River watershed Today s event also included Environment New Jersey Research and Policy Center s release of Shalefield Stories a report compiled by the grassroots group Friends of the Harmed that outlines the stories of families impacted by fracking across the country The report can be found online at http www environmentnewjersey org reports nje shalefield stories Residents next door in Pennsylvania recounted their stories of illness water contamination and damage to their livelihoods due to dirty drilling operations which the organizations said that Shalefield Stories was the latest evidence for keeping fracking out of the Delaware River watershed Given the staff transition and with every day new revelations as to how bad fracking is for water the DRBC should fulfill its mission to protect the Delaware a critical drinking water supply and make permanent the temporary moratorium on fracking in the watershed said David Pringle NJ Campaign Director Clean Water Action People recalling their experiences with fracking damage in Shalefield Stories include Judy Armstrong Stiles of Bradford County Pa who spoke of the barium and arsenic that was found in her drinking water and then in her blood after Chesapeake began drilling on her land June Chappel of Washington County

  • New Jersey’s Ban on Dangerous Gas Drilling Expires | Environment New Jersey
2013 Trenton NJ Today as New Jersey s one year moratorium on the dangerous shale gas drilling technique known as fracking expires Environment New Jersey pressed for further action to protect the state s waterways and environment from this controversial and damaging practice to extract fossil fuels From toxic contamination of drinking water to the destruction of the beautiful places we love we ve seen what shale gas drilling has in store for our environment and our communities To date we ve been lucky that New Jersey hasn t been the guinea pig for these activities like Pennsylvania next door But we need to take heed of the hard lessons learned by other states and keep shale gas drilling out of New Jersey said Environment New Jersey s clean water associate Megan Fitzpatrick New Jersey need look no further than neighboring Pennsylvania to see how shale gas drilling and the controversial practice known as fracking has opened up a Pandora s Box that has led to a swath of environmental destruction and public health threats The gas industry in Pennsylvania has committed 2 700 violations of cornerstone environmental laws in recent months Their pollution of rivers streams and groundwater has led to drinking water advisories for hundreds of thousands of residents near Pittsburgh And in the most egregious cases drilling companies have been slapped with multi million dollar fines There have been explosions fires semi truck safety violations by the thousands and air pollution The list goes on and on They say that those who forget history are doomed to repeat it With New Jersey left vulnerable again to this dirty and dangerous drilling practice it looks like the Garden State is going to learn the hard way unless our leaders in Trenton take action said Fitzpatrick Environment New Jersey

  • On the Eve of Governor’s Decision on Fracking Waste Ban, Environment New Jersey Report Documents the Cost of Fracking | Environment New Jersey
gas drilling practice known as fracking Environment New Jersey Research Policy Center today released a report documenting a wide range of dollars and cents costs imposed by dirty drilling As documented in The Cost of Fracking fracking creates millions of dollars of health costs related to everything from air pollution to ruined roads to contaminated property Fracking s environmental damage is bad enough but it turns out that this dirty drilling imposes heavy dollar and cents costs as well said Doug O Malley interim director with Environment New Jersey This is all the more reason we must keep New Jersey free from the impacts of fracking and its waste While the report documents a wide range of costs imposed by fracking Environment New Jersey is particularly concerned about the impact of fracking waste on New Jersey s waterways We have known for quite some time that fracking poses a very real threat to our health and wellbeing in New Jersey but this report underscores the very real threat fracking poses to our wallets said Senator Bob Gordon D Bergen and Passaic Counties Natural gas is often lauded as a cheap accessible source of energy But we cannot ignore the harmful environmental and financial consequences associated with using hydraulic fracturing The costs and lasting effects of contaminated drinking water and soil destruction of natural resources and degradation of public infrastructure are all too often left to governments and taxpayers to bear This state cannot afford to clean up yet another industrial energy boom that has turned into an environmental and public health debacle Fracking operations contaminate drinking water sources in many ways from spills to leaking waste pits to methane from drilling itself In Dimock Pennsylvania fracking operations contaminated the drinking water wells of several households for roughly three years perhaps
