    total material value chain from raw material to recycling but also geopolitical political economic environmental and legal aspects providing continuing education highlighting the complexity and importance of the topic for various industrial sectors and the scientific disciplines partnering with organizations that are active in similar fields to offer complementary and extended knowledge and experience What it is Rare and critical elements including rare earth elements REE are not only rare and critical because of their low availability in the earth crust which in some cases is far below 10 but also because they are difficult to exploit Their availability is concentrated on a few regions in the world These days more than 95 of REE are extracted in China In the last 20 years the value of rare and critical elements increased because they became essential for a sustainable functioning of modern society Access to and affordability of such elements was identified as critical raw materials by the European Commission These are the REEs Antimony Beryllium Chromium Cobalt Gallium Germanium Indium Magnesium Molybdenum Niobium Silicon Metal and Tungsten all of them crucial for the global economy The European industry is highly dependent on imports of rare and critical elements which are of high strategic importance Market distortions lead to a high volatility in prices and availability Also these materials are often extracted and processed under socially and economically poor conditions In the case of high tech materials this dependence can even be considered critical in view of their economic value and high supply risks It becomes crucial for the economic growth Sectors such as energy communication technologies automotive aerospace construction or machinery and equipment sectors depend on free access to such metals Although Europe and the United States have many ore deposits for rare and critical elements China is controlling the market Today s costs of exploration and extraction technologies may limit further mining if no essential breakthroughs in the next years will facilitate the extraction of less common elements from process deposits On the other end of the value chain urban mining allows Europe and other countries with less resources to increase their amount of rare and critical elements through re use and recycling of final products New methods are and will be established to obtain high quality materials from such processes A third option to improve the balance between the extended use of rare and critical elements and their availability is to either reduce the amount of these elements by using other materials and or other technologies or by substituting the elements in the materials without loosing the functions they provide This is a very challenging task and the aim of new materials research In any case it is necessary to discuss and highlight the topic of rare and critical elements along the whole value chain and to find opportunities to minimize the risk that a shortage of such elements may have on the economy and the well being of people in the whole world How it began
