    currently Holland No blood donation ban in Holland currently Ireland No blood donation ban in Ireland currently Italy No blood donation ban in Italy currently Germany No blood donation ban in Germany currently There is an old recommendation from the Robert Koch Institut comparable to the CDC in the US that German people with ME should not donate blood but it is only a recommendation and it is from the 1990s EMEA Germany wrote to the health minister Philip Rösler greenhorn and demanded a blood ban He did not react or reply The person in the health ministry who is responsible for the blood banks Dr Johanna Strobel was contacted and sent lots of information So far she has not reacted and has not answered Malta Malta has implemented a ban on people with ME donating blood Norway No blood donation ban in Norway currently Although EMEA Norway member Norwegian ME Association has been actively involved in discussions with the government and health institute and has been discussing in the media Click here to see Norwegian Helsedirektorat response to EMEA call for European blood donation ban for people with ME The government authorities responsible for this state that one must not give blood if one is ill and that this includes ME patients as well However the reality is that ME patients are allowed to give blood possibly due to continuing ignorance of some healthcare personnel who believe ME patients only have psychiatric problems and or they are allowed to give blood if they are feeling more or less ok at the time Despite this not proving they are well and free of infections The Norwegian health authorities often refer to other European health authorities which usually means UK when it comes to ME It is to be seen whether

    Dr Bell has recently been performing studies on XMRV and will have results in time for the lectures For more information about Dr Bell s work click here For more information on the David Bell Lecture Tour and to stay informed of lecture dates at a venue in your country please contact EMEA click here Dr David Bell MD has vast experience of ME CFS He graduated from Harvard College in 1967 with an AB degree in English literature followed by Boston University with an MD degree in 1971 Post doctoral training in paediatrics was completed in 1976 with subspecialty training in Paediatric Behaviour and Developmental Disorders In 1978 he began work at the University of Rochester but soon began a private practice in the town of Lyndonville New York In 1985 nearly 220 persons became ill with an illness subsequently called chronic fatigue syndrome in the communities surrounding Lyndonville New York This illness cluster began a study of the illness which continues today Dr Bell is the author or co author of numerous scientific papers on CFS and in 2003 was named Chairman of the Advisory Committee for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome of the Department of Health and Human Services

  • European ME Alliance - European ME Alliance Call for Europe-Wide Ban on Blood Donation from People Diagnosed With ME/CFS April 2010
    and the conference The EMEA letter is as follows Dear Minister The European ME Alliance EMEA is a grouping of European organisations that are involved in supporting patients suffering from myalgic encephalomyelitis ME CFS and campaigning for biomedical research to provide treatments and cures for ME CFS The alliance consists of members from Belgium Denmark Germany Ireland Norway Spain Sweden Switzerland and the UK As you know recent research published in Science magazine by the Whittemore Peterson Institute the National Cancer Institute and the Cleveland Clinic has shown the possibility of a link between ME CFS and a gammaretrovirus xenotropic murine leukemia virus related virus XMRV D ue to the possible risk of contamination of blood supplies the Canadian Blood Service recently prohibited blood donations from people who have ME CFS or have had ME CFS The Australian Red Cross Blood Service has also indefinitely deferred donors who have been diagnosed with ME CFS New Zealand is considering following this lead EMEA believe such a prohibition is not only wise but is a necessary and urgent action to take until more research can be performed Otherwise there is a great risk to the safety of blood supplies and to the health of citizens within Europe EMEA therefore request that you initiate an immediate prohibition of blood donations from people who have been diagnosed with ME CFS in Europe and allocate funding for further biomedical research into ME CFS EMEA also ask you to reconsider the invitation made by EMEA to meet with us and other European health ministers Chief Medical Officers on 23rd May in London and to attend the 5 th Invest in ME International ME CFS Conference 2010 in Westminster London on 24 th May in order to meet with the leading experts on ME CFS and to

  • European ME Alliance - XMRV virus found in Dutch ME/CFS patients
    found the retrovirus XMRV in many patients with ME CFS The study was published in the leading scientific journal Science after a Research period of 2 5 years Researchers at UMC St Radboud had doubts and decided to repeat the Science research with frozen blood samples from Dutch patients from 1991 1992 The study took place very rapidly under the leadership of Nijmegen experimental virologist Dr Frank Kuppeveld and internist Professor Dr Jos van der Meer But they found nothing Neither in the blood of 32 patients nor in that of the 43 controls the retrovirus was found the UMC St Radboud was quoted in a press release issued at the end of last February Now it is obvious certain things are concealed This week a letter has been made public by Annette Whittemore who directs the WPI In this letter she describes that the WPI at the request of Frank Van Kuppeveld has tested some blood samples from the Dutch cohort study prior to the completion of the Nijmegen study The WPI found traces of XMRV in these samples Whittemore says she possesses email correspondence that shows Van Kuppeveld was aware of the WPI research results before the Dutch
