our soul The possibility to express oneself creatively gives a sense of freedom from our daily burdens It helps us to reflect positively and strive for better solutions If we think about our main goal in life I guess everyone will agree with me that to feel FREE would sum it up A lot of people think that if they work in a more scientific organisational or technical field they should not even try to be artistic Wrong This is just a cover up We are not using all the artistic or emotional brain power we have in us We are only used to the structures needed for our work and so as we get older we seem to think there is nothing artistic in us Wrong again Just try to do something on a regular basis like with sports and you will be surprised just how artistic you can be One of the messages everyone should understand is what artists did at the beginning of their career They began to express themselves through whatever means they felt drawn to Some felt the desire to play an instrument others to paint and others yet to write poetry and then books They were also overloaded by the daily routine of school and homework but they persevered Most of us succumbed to the call of the economic world got a proper job and kept up with the Jones or even overtook them But we at European House of Arts think that everybody can make use of their hidden talents to reach that inner freedom you probably just haven t noticed them yet What you will find is that art can free your mind and soul What can I get out of this as an artist Well first of all it is a platform for established artists to motivate other artists to aspire to By chipping in to European House of Arts festivals the more successful artists can show what they are artistically capable of and at the same time be a catalyst for many new creative thoughts cropping up in the minds of other people at the festival To try to better the master is a natural human instinct whether the master is a philosopher author sculptor or painter Positive competition inspires people and spurs on those who feel the need to answer the call this can be a younger artist or even one of the team who is not an artist or visitors who feel urged to try something out It is most gratifying for professional artists to know that the fruits of their work has more than just a decorative value on the wall of a living room or simply dead in a catalogue somewhere Art lives and this life can be shared European House of Arts is a growing network and there are so many opportunities for artists to get involved in art happenings all over Europe The integrative character of the network means direct contact with people of

catalyst for many new creative thoughts cropping up in the minds of other people at the festival To try to better the master is a natural human instinct whether the master is a philosopher author sculptor or painter Positive competition inspires people and spurs on those who feel the need to answer the call this can be a younger artist or even one of the team who is not an artist or visitors who feel urged to try something out It is most gratifying for professional artists to know that the fruits of their work has more than just a decorative value on the wall of a living room or simply dead in a catalogue somewhere Art lives and this life can be shared European House of Arts is a growing network and there are so many opportunities for artists to get involved in art happenings all over Europe The integrative character of the network means direct contact with people of other ethnic origin and the idea of transforming alien cultures into one s own perception of art is always a thankful blessing I remember once a glass blower from a small provincial town in Germany who met a Parisian artist at one of the art festivals of European House of Arts and the next thing was the offer for them to do a joint installation in Barcelona Well in the art world anything can happen Dreams can come true as we all know And this is just one example of the fruitfulness of an open network of the movement European House of Arts Sometimes we have only petrol money accommodation and food for the artists but no one is out of pocket in the end We do however get the occasional big fish and can then afford to pay

multi cultural society is only just being discovered Most Europeans still see themselves as being only member of a certain nation Dutch Irish or whatever What I see in addition is a network of ethnic groups whose boundaries can only be drawn on a completely different type of map We believe in our nationalities because we are born in our countries we did not choose them When we leave our country we go abroad to the foreigners What about East and West Germany now united as a country but still divided by unseen factors deriving from different ideological social and economic backgrounds What about the Silesians You enter the area of Goerlitz in Germany and you are already in Silesia which most people consider only to be in Poland Or the Sorbs a Slavic group amongst the Germans There are hundreds of examples like this from all over Europe and my belief is not to disrupt the national boundaries that help to make an identity easier for the majority but to enjoy further the diversity of our ethnic origins Europe is a delicate network of different tongues with a vast variety of customs and traditions The great powers of the 19th century no longer dictate the national boundaries of Bosnia Romania Poland and many other great peoples but it is a trap to remain in the restrictive belief of national pride If we can build on our national identity by embracing our newly won European identity then we can learn to respect and include our cultural diversity and by doing so develop our desire to build an environment fit for all ethnic groups side by side I love talking to all kinds of people wherever they are from in this World My movement is nevertheless called European House of Arts
