  • Why Become Vegetarian?
and environmental concerns It has been stated that if all the land currently used for animal grazing were put into grain legume and vegetable production there would be no hunger and starvation in the world as there would be ample supply to feed every man woman and child a nutritious diet Other concerns include the rapid destruction of particular environments such as the rainforest in order to support the beef industry mistreatment of factory farmed animals over fishing of rivers and oceans and the destruction of other species in the process for example dolphins that get caught in tuna fishing nets Spiritual convictions A number of spiritual teachings including those of yoga Hinduism Jainism and many Native American and other aboriginal peoples believe that all living beings are expressions of God Therefore all animals are equally precious embodiments of Spirit and should be respected as such The practice of killing animals for food is thus abhorrent to adherents of these religions and to be avoided except as necessary to sustain life for example in environments where there are few plant foods available What Do Vegetarians Eat As the name suggests vegetarians do eat vegetables But that is certainly not all we eat I recall one particularly disappointing experience with what seems to be a common American concept of a vegetarian meal In 1994 while I was visiting friends in Los Angeles we planned to have lunch at a highly regarded restaurant in one of the major downtown hotels We made our reservations specifically requesting a vegetarian entrée I was really looking forward to the experience because the restaurant had a reputation for exceptionally delicious food To my dismay our lunch consisted of ordinary pasta with red sauce and plain boiled vegetables Bland and unappetizing it was essentially a meal from which the meat had been removed but nothing at all interesting had been added A vegetarian diet can actually provide us with much more variety in tastes and textures than the typical meat based fare While the average American home cooked meal generally consists of a piece of meat or fish perhaps a starch such as potatoes rice pasta or bread and a cooked vegetable and or salad a vegetarian repast may be composed of a number of dishes combining legumes grains vegetables nuts fruits and seasonings And not all vegetarians eat alike Because of varying concerns about the quality and means of obtaining non flesh animal products there are differences in diet within vegetarianism The three main approaches are Ovo lacto vegetarianism which includes the products of animals obtainable without slaughter such as milk products eggs and honey Lacto vegetarianism which includes dairy products and honey but avoids eggs as the embryos of potentially living beings Veganism which avoids all products of animal origin including honey and other bee products usually based on a desire to avoid consumption of any food that involves the exploitation of animals In general a balanced vegetarian diet is based on natural foods including

  • How a Jewish Woman Came to Embrace Jesus Christ
wanted to be one of those weak hearted Jews who betrayed their own God Yet here I was at the age of 31 going to A CHURCH My body was trembling slightly as I sat in the back The light was dim No one could see me ONLY GOD After hearing an explanation of the purification ceremony I decided I could take part in it I took the piece of paper wrote down a prayer and went up to the altar and knelt before the minister David Praver But when I opened my mouth to say I seek purification by the grace of God I burst into tears I was shocked and humiliated by my reaction but David was very kind and compassionate I went back to my seat calmed myself and somehow found the courage to stay for the entire service When it was time to leave I stood in the line where the ministers were greeting people When my turn came the first words I blurted were I m sorry but I m Jewish and I don t really know why I m here Asha said very kindly We re Jewish too I certainly didn t expect to hear this I thought I might faint Luckily I remained standing A firm resolution to follow my heart Later having returned for another Ananda event I learned that Asha gave private counseling to people Asha agreed to meet with me privately and we set a day and time to meet For the next days I was in much emotional turmoil Although most of my adult life I had been a self directed person I now felt powerless to resolve the inner battle raging within me When Asha and I met I told her that my heart was aching to know the truth and that I was drawn to the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda Intuitively I felt the truth in them but my mind rebelled I asked her how was it possible for someone like me who was Jewish to be attracted to these teachings She said When you are desperate God will pick you up and show you the way She also said If you can t relate to Jesus put that on the shelf Just take what feels right and leave the rest She recommended that I read Swami Kriyananda s book The Path Asha s advice proved very helpful I started taking classes at the center and doing the meditation practices each day More and more my heart was drawn to Ananda but my inner battle continued It was then that I made a firm resolution to follow the guidance of my heart since my rebellious mind didn t get me very far The hardest step of all Nonetheless it took two and a half more years to break through the fear and anxiety and embrace Yogananda s path I came to realize that the God I believed in was a Jewish God and that my entire self

  • Seclusion of the Heart | Expanding Light
s presence waiting for me in the action itself and flowing through me willingly like a breeze of joy through an open window These inspirations and attitudes I cultivated and prayed for during many hours of chanting and deep meditation each morning and afternoon In these ways I did not feel a fragmented schedule of spirituality and then worldly life instead I embraced the whole day as a continuous flow of God s presence in my heart In return I found a great sense of joy when I sat to meditate once more each night and offered everything back to God This is how I successfully took my seclusion of the heart If you get an opportunity to take seclusion please do it If you want to try this practice make time for it There are many resources available to you start here Above all in your own way and in your own heart always make time for God In whatever expression the divine light manifests in your life honor it and offer your devotion to God there Take more time to meditate pray and be with Him and He will watch over you and bless you always This entry was posted in Superconscious Living Bookmark the permalink Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked Name Email Website Comment Have posts you are interested in sent to you when they are published Help the Expanding Light better serve people About the Author Badri Matlock a certified Ananda Yoga and Meditation Teacher is one of the main teachers in the Ananda Yoga Teacher Training program and co directs community internship programs Posts for Superconscious Living Healing on All Levels Seclusion of the Heart Make Me a Channel of Thy Peace Music for

city united as one ray of peace It was empowering to walk with conscious awareness of being a channel of peace I felt great strength and blessings throughout that day We had an inspiring visit in the old city of Jerusalem and were able to pray and meditate in the sacred places This experience showed me that tuning in to God s peace and radiating it outwardly is one of the most powerful tools to change the consciousness of the world around us That day we contributed rays of peace to the city of Jerusalem Here is one of the peace prayers that was read during our morning meditations Saint Francis Prayer of Peace Lord make me a channel of thy peace Where there is hatred let me sow love Where there is injury pardon Where there is doubt faith Where there is despair hope Where there is darkness light Where there is sadness joy O divine Master grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console To be understood as to understand To be loved as to love For it is in giving that we receive It is in pardoning that we are pardoned It is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life This entry was posted in Superconscious Living Bookmark the permalink Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked Name Email Website Comment Have posts you are interested in sent to you when they are published Help the Expanding Light better serve people About the Author Diksha McCord Minister Counselor Hatha and Raja Yoga Teacher and Director of the Ananda Meditation Teacher Training Posts for Superconscious Living Healing on All Levels Seclusion of the Heart Make Me a Channel of
