  • The Connection Between Yoga and Meditation | Expanding Light
or sit gracefully with ease and control When we begin to slow our breath and begin to sync it with our movement we become calm Then we become closer to single minded purpose By slowing down we begin to accomplish more and we keep our attention in the present moment This also helps to strengthen our body as well as awareness to prepare for meditation Meditation and yoga are interrelated They are both part of the Eight Limbs of Patanjali s Yoga Sutras They go hand and hand They work together to unite our small self with our higher soul self One cannot be present without the other We need to be aware of the body in order to forget about it in order to go inward in meditation Where the breath flows the mind goes In yoga and in meditation we can raise our consciousness Yoga helps us to bring the body to a point of stillness by clearing away the restless energy we carry around and prepares us to become fully immersed in deep concentration meditation Yoga like chanting can help open our hearts and allow the energy to flow upward to the higher chakras and higher consciousness Be ever restful in your heart A quiet spirit will help you instantly to resolve problems that might otherwise require days weeks or even months of fretful pondering Swami Kriyananda You can learn to meditate at The Expanding Light by booking a stay with us taking personal retreat or taking Learn How to Meditate If you are a meditator come join us for Meditation Teacher Training in the summer or fall of 2016 This entry was posted in Yoga Bookmark the permalink Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked Name Email

  • Yoga and Epilepsy | Expanding Light
had epilepsy thanked me for the new earrings and hurried away Recently I was asked about what precautions should be taken by someone who has epilepsy when they are doing yoga I remembered that incident from long ago The first thing to do is to be sure to inform your yoga teacher of your condition Be prepared to help educate your teacher about how the disease manifests for you and what to do if you have a seizure during class Here is a good website you can refer to http www webmd com epilepsy tc helping a person during an epileptic seizure topic overview Know what triggers your seizures so you can control for those factors In the above ear piercing incident the woman s seizure could have been triggered by several factors including the stress of anticipated pain or experienced pain from the piercing the lack of privacy the fluorescent or flashing lights in the department store low blood sugar right before lunch time not enough sleep the night before or the time of menstrual cycle I wish I had had more time with her so I could have recommended Ananda Yoga Yoga practice has many benefits for those with epilepsy The exercise component of yoga is very helpful and is rarely a trigger for seizures but make sure you don t over exert The biggest risk is falling out of a pose when having an unexpected seizure Therefore you should avoid the full expression of poses that could cause injury if you fell out of them such as a head stand or a shoulder stand You can still enjoy a very satisfying and beneficial practice if you use modifications for these kinds of poses Epilepsy is a disease of the nervous system and yoga is known to have a calming and balancing effect on the brain and nerves Ananda Yoga includes the Energization Exercises which Paramhansa Yogananda says recharges nerve cells and teaches us how to control subtle energy Be sure to include calming breath work and meditation as part of your yoga session as we do in every Ananda Yoga class You will find the increased inner awareness from your yoga practice will give you more attunement with body and mind All that translates into a sense of empowerment and hope in the face of disease and uncertainty This entry was posted in Yoga Yoga Teacher Training Bookmark the permalink Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked Name Email Website Comment Have posts you are interested in sent to you when they are published Help the Expanding Light better serve people About the Author Maitri Jones is a Level 2 Ananda Yoga teacher Ananda lightbearer and member of the Ananda Yoga Teacher Training faculty She also leads the Ananda Yoga Teacher Training Assistantship and the How to Achieve Glowing Health and Vitality courses at The Expanding Light Posts for Yoga The Connection Between Yoga and Meditation Autumn Restorative

any tension in the throat With each exhalation feel your throat heart and belly open and relax Hold for 3 7 minutes Silently affirm I offer every thought as a bridge to divine grace To exit bring your awareness back to your body If you ve used an eye pillow gently remove it bend your knees and gently roll to your right side and slowly press yourself up into a comfortable seated position Cautions Eye Ear Sinus issues you may want to avoid having your head below your heart Use a bed pillow to support your head Do not turn your head during this pose Spinal Injuries Stay in comfort zone and avoid pose if any discomfort occurs Pregnant after 1 st trimester Avoid holding a supine position for long periods and make sure the lower back is supported If you feel the need to sneeze in this pose it is much safer to roll to one side since your chest and ribs are vulnerable to any sudden jerking movement This entry was posted in Yoga Teacher Training Yoga Therapist Training Bookmark the permalink Comments Vishuddha Chakra says October 31 2015 at 8 16 am Great Post and Nice Article I like it Thanks for Sharing Reply Melody Hansen says November 1 2015 at 4 17 am You re so welcome Thank you for reading it and posting a comment Blessings on your practices Reply Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked Name Email Website Comment Have posts you are interested in sent to you when they are published Help the Expanding Light better serve people Yoga Teacher Support Center Articles Inspiration for Your Teaching Teaching Students with Unique Needs Yoga Therapy All Articles Q A Ask a Question Past Q

  • My Healing Experience with Ananda Yoga Therapy | Expanding Light
positive effect as I was suddenly able to breathe deeply from my abdomen I felt taller I felt centered in a place of inner peace and courage that was new to me Since I felt that past hurts lodged in my heart were the source of the neck and shoulder pain Maitri recommended that I address that stiffness in the center of my heart An affirmation came quickly to me I release all heart strings tied to past and future dissolving them in Omnipresent Love It has been a month since my first yoga therapy session The relatively simple exercises seem to have unraveled thought forms that I call worry hurry and hide My natural posture has relaxed into place supported by bones and gradually softening muscles It is much easier to breathe relax and release tension consciously allowing my mind and body to respond to life with greater lightness and freedom This entry was posted in Yoga Yoga Therapist Training Bookmark the permalink Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked Name Email Website Comment Have posts you are interested in sent to you when they are published Help the Expanding Light better serve people Posts for Yoga The Connection Between Yoga and Meditation Autumn Restorative Yoga Pose Yoga and Epilepsy A Restorative Yoga Pose for the Summer My Healing Experience with Ananda Yoga Therapy Returning to Yoga after a Back Injury Motherhood and Meditation Prenatal Yoga A Visualization for Expectant Mothers Positive Attitude for Birth The Right Way to End Deep Relaxation Categories Meditation Meditation Teacher Training Superconscious Living About Expanding Light Nature and Spirit Spiritual Travel Sustainable Living Uncategorized Yoga Yoga Teacher Training Yoga Therapist Training Archives January 2016 December 2015 November 2015 October 2015 September 2015 August 2015
