  • Book of Job – Sad and Mad | The Listening Post
they are in pain But Job s conventional wisdom of a reward punishment religion that suffering is always a punishment from God does not allow him to be angry at God for fear of further repercussions So in a flash of artful genius Job decides to direct his anger at his birthday He doesn t just famously wish to have not been born In poetic flare he wants God to erase that day from history He wants that square on the calendar blotted out in black He wants time and light and life to skip over that day as if it never happened Of course Job s life didn t come from an interval in time Job didn t just happen God made Job And ultimately Job was wondering how God allowed the calamities that happened to him More here About Nick Pastor of Faithwerks Church in Vancouver BC View all posts by Nick This entry was posted in Uncategorized Bookmark the permalink Book of Job Conventional Wisdom Book of Job Talking TO God Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked Name Email Website Comment Search for Recent Posts Book of

  • Book of Job – Conventional Wisdom | The Listening Post
This story is also troubling because the writer of Job describes a conversation between God and the Devil messing with Job s life over a wager There is reason to believe that at least some parts of Job is fictional It is possible that the writer of Job adapted a popular widely circulated wisdom story to challenge conventional wisdom a common belief among his people that blessings are God s rewards for being good and suffering is divine punishment What happens to Job is a problem to conventional wisdom Job is is a good person suffering he has done nothing to warrant punishment His story invites us to ask harder questions about our suffering and the suffering we see in the world And it also asks us why we worship God if it s not to ward off suffering by getting on his good side More here About Nick Pastor of Faithwerks Church in Vancouver BC View all posts by Nick This entry was posted in Uncategorized Bookmark the permalink Psalm 34 Desperate Measures Book of Job Sad and Mad Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked Name Email Website Comment

  • Psalm 34 – Desperate Measures | The Listening Post
David s rescue quite a bit But what s peculiar this poem is the occasion that inspired this poem We are told that David was face to face with an enemy Abimelek But instead of a fight David pretended to be insane and annoyed Abimelek until he just wanted David gone That s all we know about this incident And we have this poem It s not a very heroic tale especially for someone known for his bravery and skill in battle It may even be a bit embarrassing to tell But David doesn t seem to care For him the story here is how God comes to his rescue even when he is not brave God helps us because this is what God does Whether we deserve his help is not part of the equation More here About Nick Pastor of Faithwerks Church in Vancouver BC View all posts by Nick This entry was posted in Uncategorized Bookmark the permalink Psalm 111 Fear and Wisdom Book of Job Conventional Wisdom Leave a Reply Cancel reply Your email address will not be published Required fields are marked Name Email Website Comment Search for Recent Posts Book of Job Talking TO
