  • Lower-Level Homeschool Classes (ages 6–11) | Fernbrook Farms Education Center, Bordentown, NJ
    to experience and learn what you have taught is invaluable to our family as homeschoolers Fun interesting inventive able to capture and keep kids attention for all topics Daughter loves it and looks forward to it It definitely ties into our science curriculum and covers NJ content standards The kids are outside regardless of weather That helps demonstrate the importance of nature in all its forms Hands on activities are awesome Example 8 Week Lower Level Curriculum Amazing Arachnids Autumn brings an abundance of arachnids and Fernbrook Farms hosts a wide variety of species This entire class is devoted to demystifying and learning about our eight legged friends We ll examine spiders and their adaptations behavioral and physical learning about hunting techniques and web designs as well as other characteristics which help them to survive in their environments Fungus in Fall Autumn is a time of decomposition in the forest and one of the main contributors is fungus This class will focus entirely on fungus and its relationship with the forest We ll learn about fungus in symbiosis learn to identify several species of fungus and learn the parts of fungi and their functions Field Trip New Jersey Marine Science Consortium Our field trip this semester will focus on the marshes of Sandy Hook NJ at the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium Our group will be led by a naturalist from the NJMSC to the salt marshes where we ll enter the waters edge to capture small marine animals in nets and sieves to study up close Afterwards the class will picnic and explore the beach before heading back to the farm Birds of Prey Autumn migration brings many birds of prey to Fernbrook We ll learn about the Great Horned Owls Red Tailed Hawks and Screech Owls living in the forests here as well as some of the species found a little less frequently in the woods We ll discuss and learn about physical adaptations which make them well suited to hunt in the environments they live in We ll spend the last part of class dissecting owl pellets to learn more about diets of owls Forest Succession and Fall Colors Forests develop over time and at Fernbrook we re able to visit several forests in the early middle and late stages of forest succession We ll investigate how forests transition why they change and the different species of plants and animals which are found within the different stages of a forest s life This class helps build a strong foundation of basic ecological concepts while also admiring and learning about the fall leaf colors Oh Deer White tailed deer are the largest mammals found in central New Jersey aside from humans and have peculiar behavior this time of the year We ll follow deer trails around Fernbrook looking for deer learning about how they mark their territory and find a mate as well as how they prepare for the cold winter months We ll also use white tailed

  • Homeschool Upper-Lever Program | Fernbrook Farms Education Center, Bordentown, NJ
    loves science and this program keep my daughter excited about learning We love it here I love that they get to really get into everything Hands on experience wonderful staff It keeps getting better I especially like the emails of what was covered in class and additional ideas Excellent educational value as well as physical exercise Example 8 week Syllabus Each week we will explore the importance of water in all aspects of nature and life Week 1 Water Cycle The water cycle has been happening for millions and millions of years We will explore the water cycle and learn how nature uses and reuses its most precious resource Students will design their own strategies that can help conserve water at Fernbrook and at home Week 2 Water Pollution One of our most devastating sources of pollution is non point source pollution where scientists are unable to pinpoint where the culprit started We will discuss many aspects of water pollution including non point source ground water contamination and other common sources We will also brain storm on what we can do to improve our systems for monitoring and clean up Week 3 Stream We will explore the stream at Fernbrook Farms and its properties during this session of our water ecology series By taking an inventory of the plants and animals that live in and around Bacon s Run students will discover the importance of clean water to the flora and fauna and learn how the biotic aspects of a stream indicate the general health of the waterway Week 4 Pond Restoration Project There are a few things students can do to help not only maintain the health of the pond but make it better Students will work on some habitat improvement in the pond to help increase the diversity of the native flora and fauna that call it home We will plant native wetland plants to help with bank stabilization and wildlife food sources Week 5 Rain Garden Huge amounts of water are lost to rain This water can not only be used for drinking but irrigating fields as well Rain Gardens are not a new trend but are quickly becoming popular in households with space to plant Students will help plan and plant the Fernbrook Rain Garden and learn the strategies of proper placement to insure success Week 6 Water Survival Strategies Without water human s can only live for a few days What would you do if you were stranded with no water We will learn a few strategies for getting water from unusual sources such as plants the ground leaves and even the sun Week 7 Water and Energy Seems contradictory but you can get energy from water in several ways We will introduce the concept of using water as an energy source and discuss the viability of a waterwheel at Fernbrook Students will each design and build a small waterwheel to demonstrate Week 8 Field Trip Wastewater Treatment Plant We will take a private tour
