Winter Camp on Martin Luther King Jr Day was a wonderful mix of outdoor fun animal time relaxing by the crackling fireplace and enjoying special winter activities We hiked through an area of Fernbrook forest that is rarely explored during summer camp and even found an animal skull along the way Based on the size location it was found and type of teeth it has the group of camper detectives settled on a young fox as their conclusion It is now on the well known Discovery Table in the Kerney Learning Barn for all to see The weather was cold but not frigid and the campers discovered lots of fascinating ice designs and even some interesting sounds made by ice on the irrigation pond Other activities for the day included feeding the animals roasting marshmallows over the fire in the cottage making winter bird feeders to hang in the Fernbrook Rain Garden and on the Great Lawn played a survival game and stayed warm We have more Winter Break Camp to come on President s Day Feb 20th 2012 when students are off of school and Spring Break Camp is scheduled for April 9th 10th 11th as well as April 23rd and 24th 2012 to accommodate all our faithful summer camp families For more details about what we do during Winter and Spring Break Camps visit the Education Center website Registration forms can be printed and mailed to reserve a spot for your child ren to plug into nature with us during a day off of school Doesn t it make parents want to take the day off and explore Fernbrook with us also And if all this camp talk hasn t gotten you excited enough about spending time at Fernbrook maybe a little reminiscing will help with a 2011 Summer Camp Video It s worth the time and makes us laugh every time but you might need your campers to interpret the inside jokes so have them join you to watch these summer camp memories We hope to see you soon at Fernbrook Farms Education Center Posted in Camps Fall Break Camp Fiddlehead Summer Camp Spring Break Camp Winter Break Camp Young Stewards Summer Enrichment Program Tagged activities animals farm Fernbrook Farms hiking ice Kerney Barn pond rain garden seasons Planting a Rain Garden Posted on January 5 2012 by Jenna For a few years FFEC has dreamed about and planned to add a rain garden at Fernbrook Last year at this time Farmer Q planted three River Birch in the wet circle in the middle of the offices and Kerney Barn buildings to get the ball rolling This October Fernbrook Homeschool students ages 6 14 learned about the advantages and necessary considerations before planning the design of the Fernbrook rain garden Pinelands Nursery Bowman s Hill Wildflower Preserve and Fernbrook Nursery donated the wetland loving shrubs ferns and grasses that the students planted Then in November the staff prepped the garden for winter with mulch and bird feeders

  • Fiddlehead Summer Camp | Fernbrook Farms Environmental Education Center
on a child s life The American Camping Association ACA did a large research project and gathered results from over 5 000 families at over 80 camps over a four year period As Ellen Warren recently wrote in Metro Kids magazine about the ACA s research Results showed that even two weeks at camp led to gains in kids positive identity and values spirituality and social physical and thinking skills So here at Fernbrook Farms Summer Camp we believe campers get to experience the best of both for the ultimate summer experience They get to follow their natural curiosities in our varied eco systems while doing it with their peers True most everything at camp is geared towards having fun but we believe that s when the most learning and child development happens At Fernbrook our staff are dedicated to making every moment of every day an optimal experience for every camper so they come away with an appreciation of nature and a self confidence that just makes them feel good about themselves So there you have it a summer at Fernbrook Farms couldn t be beat Mr Brian Posted in Camps Fiddlehead Summer Camp Newsletter Uncategorized Young Stewards Summer Enrichment Program Summer Camp 2013 Posted on October 7 2013 by Mr Brian Summer Camp 2013 As summer camp director fall always brings mixed emotions as the days bring a more relaxed pace but missing are the smiles of campers and the joy they bring to Fernbrook on a daily basis From their excitement of picking up a chicken for the first time or the hundredth time to the joy of getting muddy at the creek I was reminded so often this summer of the power of nature to stimulate a child s natural curiosities Every summer is memorable but several things stand out about the summer of 2013 This was the most successful summer of our Young Steward s overnight camping trips as both our canoe trip to the Delaware River and our hiking trip along the Appalachian Trail were well attended and highly rewarding for the campers In addition the Young Stewards ventured out on several new exciting day trips including crabbing at Berkeley Island County Park exploring Union Lake with the natural land trust and investigating around Cheesequake State Park Around campus our chickens produced an abundance of eggs which provided plenty of opportunities for campers to create feasts in our Kerney Barn kitchen The meadow was a popular place of discovery as we uncovered several new species of caterpillars never before seen at Fernbrook The frogs at the pond were once again a source of great delight for campers from the thrill of trying to catch one in their net to the elation of attaining the mission to the joy of holding one in their hands As always we brought our weeks to an end with our Friday afternoon campfires filled with hilarious camper skits fun games and everyone s favorite marshmallow roasting And as always summer had to end as school days are in full swing now but the memories from summer will last with us for a lifetime We hope everyone has a great school year and that we will see you on the farm at some of our events over the school year before we see you next summer Remember Be Safe Have Fun and Help Each Other Mr Brian Posted in About the Farm Camps Fiddlehead Summer Camp Summer Camp Open House Posted on April 8 2013 by Mr Brian April 28th from 1pm to 3pm Attending summer camp can have a very positive effect on children s psychological development independence and self esteem Our campers at Fernbrook make lasting experiences and come back year after year We are preparing for another great summer Join us April 28 th from 1 3pm at our Summer Camp Open House Meet our staff take a wagon ride of the campgrounds and feed the animals Posted in About the Farm Camps Fiddlehead Summer Camp Young Stewards Summer Enrichment Program Thank You Summer Camp Families Posted on October 31 2012 by Jenna Dear Summer Camp Families Another summer has passed and the school year is in full swing It s hard to believe the camp season ended less than 6 weeks ago and yet it seems like the school year has been around forever Each year we look to improve the camp and now is the time to reflect and evaluate how some of the improvements impacted camp life this past summer as we start to plan for next summer First and foremost was the improvement in the Kerney Barn For anyone that was able to step into the barn the visual improvements were obvious cabinets refrigerators sinks etc From my viewpoint the improvements were priceless as the opportunities for engaging campers were endless The kitchen gave us the resources to give kids a range of hands on experiencesfrom making omelets using our own Fernbrook eggs and veggies to getting dirty by making their own play dough Another improvement around campus was the addition of several elements in the low ropes course We value team building at Fernbrook and the low ropes elements gave us another resource to challenge kids to push their own personal comfort zones while being supported by their peers to find success These elements really highlight the importance of working together and supporting one another to achieve both group and individual goals Another major change around campus was the addition of Lydia Francis as our garden expert Her presence and expertise in the garden provided the campers many varied hands on learning experiences as they spent time exploring the garden Discoveries in the garden truly became an enjoyable part of Fernbrook life that both campers and staff appreciated There were many more subtle changes around campus including the choice activities rain garden in the barnyard more animals in the barn and improved trail system All changes were guided by the principle that
