  • Summer Camp: Fiddleheads v. Young Stewards | Fernbrook Farms Environmental Education Center
program is designed to meet the growing development of our campers while challenging them in their personal growth and understanding of our environment The Fiddleheads are inspired and educated through adventures on the farm while having fun and being themselves Whereas the Young Stewards inspiration and engagement with nature happens through day trips and occasional overnight trips to the vast diversity of NJ s ecology where they can compare and contrast the range of ecosystems that exist here Our Young Stewards program also values the understanding that children aged 12 14 years old are experiencing emotional growth physical development and new social pressures With that in mind this important stage in their lives is part of the reason that we focus on small groups and a camper to staff ratio of 5 1 Our staff are experienced educators that understand the varied needs of campers at this time in their lives Through engaging with nature the Young Stewards are encouraged to promote teamwork leadership and ecological awareness The power of nature always amazes me as it seems to always make campers forget about the pressures and stereotypes they see on a daily basis through media and allows them to be kids without external stress Similarly our Fiddlehead Camp allows campers to follow their natural curiosity in nature where they can grow and learn for themselves without the pressures of a school environment On the farm every camper is equally inspired to let their passions guide their inquisitions They have the freedom to play and learn for themselves while our professional staff guide them where appropriate We believe that when campers are given the opportunity to experience nature first hand that s when the most transformative development occurs and not only with their education of nature but also with their growth

  • Why Fernbrook Farms summer camp? | Fernbrook Farms Environmental Education Center
by Mr Brian You may have noticed that we are fans of Richard Louv and his book Last Child In The Woods He has put into words a whole book s worth of our philosophy on why we are trying to engage kids with nature He also has done extensive research which is showing more and more that our mental physical and spiritual health links directly to our association with nature in positive ways Louv p 3 Throughout the book he expands on the many ways that engaging with nature is beneficial for us as human beings and that getting kids engaged with nature at an early age leaves them a lifetime to appreciate their experiences Similarly there has been extensive research done on the power of attending summer camp and the positive impact it has on a child s life The American Camping Association ACA did a large research project and gathered results from over 5 000 families at over 80 camps over a four year period As Ellen Warren recently wrote in Metro Kids magazine about the ACA s research Results showed that even two weeks at camp led to gains in kids positive identity and values spirituality and social physical and thinking skills So here at Fernbrook Farms Summer Camp we believe campers get to experience the best of both for the ultimate summer experience They get to follow their natural curiosities in our varied eco systems while doing it with their peers True most everything at camp is geared towards having fun but we believe that s when the most learning and child development happens At Fernbrook our staff are dedicated to making every moment of every day an optimal experience for every camper so they come away with an appreciation of nature and a self
