  • Alzheimer's Patients
is well documented that as Alzheimer s progresses the patient feels increasingly comfortable living in the past and can remember past episodes of life more readily than contemporaneous ones While this is viewed merely as a failure of the memory it also has to do with a disposition of the soul that can no longer find interest and meaning in present circumstances California Wild Rose Used in combination with Honeysuckle to bring more vigor and interest in life and to counteract states of boredom listlessness and apathy Iris To stimulate the soul s creative impulses This is especially important because many institutional approaches tend to deaden the soul life of the Alzheimer s patient with drugs television and monotonous routines Obviously this remedy needs to be used in tandem with other therapeutic measures that introduce and sustain the creative expression of the patient Milkweed To counteract states of over dependency or childlike behavior to help the patient be as capable and as independent as possible even as the disease progresses Bleeding Heart and Golden Ear Drops These two flower essences are close botanical cousins and can be used in tandem to help the heartbreak emotional confusion memory lapses and bouts of crying that occur easily for Alzheimer s patients Even though the mind cannot readily articulate the impact of the disease the emotional part of the self feels deep grief heartbreak and isolation Chamomile For bouts of crying angry outbursts or other forms of emotional moodiness that can beset the Alzheimer s patient Holly A generally good flower essence to consider to help the heart stay open to love and connected to others socially no matter what the outer condition To help the patient feel and respond to love as the greatest healer and universal bond between two human beings

process of refining the clinical protocol we will use To that end we are looking for feedback from flower essence practitioners to help guide in the design of the study We also seek to understand the ways in which flower essences are currently being used for depression We request your assistance by completing the Depression Study Questionnaire It should only take you 10 to 15 minutes to complete Editor s note We encourage all practitioners working with depression cases to fill out the form as much as possible whether or not you intend to participate in the clinical study or if you are unsure if your practice qualifies Your answers to the questionnaire will help us refine the clinical study design and select participating practitioners Participation in the Multi Site Study Besides tabulating the information received from the responses to this questionnaire we are looking for a number of interested clinicians to become active participants in the study To conduct a study of this magnitude we will need approximately 500 patients If each site provided only 5 patient samples it would take approximately 100 sites to complete the study If you are a professional health care provider who actively uses flower essences we invite your participation If you decide to join the study what is the commitment on your part You will identify a patient new to your practice who you feel has depression as part of the case or as the main presenting problem You will seek an informed consent from the patients to participate in the study and they sign a form which we will supply You will administer the Beck Depression Inventory that we supply to the your patients and conduct the structured depression interview The Hamilton Depression Scale during the first appointment These assessments must be taken before you give them their first flower remedy The client must also complete the demographics form which we supply for each person who has agreed to participate in the study This form will take less than five minutes to complete You will administer your usual therapy for one month and then add flower essence therapy to your other treatment methods for three more months for a total of four months During each visit with the patient you will complete a treatment form which allows us to track your work with the patient It simply includes a record of the essences prescribed and a 1 6 word description of any additional therapy given This should take you less than a minute to do Monthly you will ask the patient to complete the Beck Depression Inventory as part of their office visit At the end of your therapy with the patient you will complete a termination form and re administer the two original depression inventories to the patient Again this is a five minute assessment form Participation in this study is an opportunity to provide the Flower Essence Society with valuable clinical information which will deepen our understanding of flower essence

  • Plant Study of Showy Aster
spectacular except for its lavender colored petals So its name Showy puzzled me until I looked closer at its characteristics Height this one I m observing is about 2 tall while others can be shorter even less than a foot some even only a few inches tall Its smooth feeling fuzzy stem is rounded but has three sides This formation carries from its base to its extremely smooth tips Branches the plant rises from the ground almost straight and erect although it has a gentle curve but then a foot higher its branch shifts direction in a subtle zig zag Leaves these are a grass green color about 5 long near the base but less than 1 2 at the very top The larger leaves are toothed 2 from the tip the smaller ones are smoothed at the edges and flat Flowers there s a strong contrast between the beautiful lavender petals surrounding a yellow disk with the plant having about 50 clustered florets The aster typically blooms in late August through October often meeting the first frost The flowers form toward the top flowering at the tip of each branch each one lasting for a day or two before fading They tend to open horizontally in a receptive fashion Its buds have a torch shape that lighten in color at the tip Fire The same plant displays buds flowers at their peak and faded flowers that have lost their brilliant yellow turning to a pale brown beige The seeds are so tiny at the tips of the white stamen in the center of the flower This hardy plant thrives in open meadows It also gravitates along the edges of ponds and creeks where it can be more prolific The soil doesn t need to be especially fertile but it does need some direct sun it loves the sun When its sun shaped yellow centered flowers are open they conceal nothing being completely receptive to the sun The upper portion of the entire plant is shaggy overall and irregularly branched very top heavy Its refinement can be seen in its delicate tiny leaves near the graceful buds and flowers These characteristics indicate that most of its energy gravitates toward the sun it appears to be more lofty than grounded Apparently it is unobtrusive as a plant until it flowers and it has no strong apparent smell though I gradually became receptive to the blooms delicate fragrance The scent of a broken root is of rich chlorophyll like newly cut grass perhaps tinged with mint Its leaves are only slightly bitter to the taste but perfectly palatable Its soft silk like petals are not bitter tasting but soft like buttercrunch lettuce Elementally the torch like shaped bud and the bright yellow centered radiant disc flower of the aster suggest the fire of the sun It perhaps along with the daisy are the two flowers that are most similar to the image of the sun raying forth Green is certainly the plant

  • Personal Story: When You Wish Upon Aster
was Carmine Tedeschi and I still have a vivid memory of his physical appearance that day A warmth and trust developed during our conversation He convinced me to take the train home and give my father another chance He also insisted on giving me the two dollars for the trip home Things did calm down at my house and I never attempted to run away again While I was a senior in high school that year Carmine and I exchanged letters and I returned the two dollar loan We fell out of touch when I went to college Five years later his wife sent a note to my parents address asking if I would visit Carmine who was very ill in the hospital Even though I was living in New York City where his hospital was located I was unsure of myself and afraid to deal with anyone s illness I looked at the letter on my desk for days then weeks then months By that point I feared the worst and didn t even respond to her request Nearly 10 years elapsed before my soul grew further and I realized the importance of being there for friends in need I tried to locate Carmine but all my efforts were in vain I began accepting that I would have to live with my remorse Then a few days after I did the attunement exercise with the aster Carmine and his wife were rummaging through papers in their attic By seeming chance he discovered a letter I had written to him 27 years earlier He sent a letter to my home address and my parents forwarded it on to me I was shocked Not only was Carmine alive and well but he had cherished our meeting as much as I had What s more he had forgiven me for not visiting him in the hospital It seemed significant that I was now 44 years old the same age Carmine had been when he had given me the ride 27 years earlier It is also notable that I was 17 at the time and he was now 71 the same age with the numbers reversed Since that time our friendship continues to develop I had nurtured a wish in my soul to reconnect with someone who was dear to me My experience with the Aster flower seemed to draw my own Star more near to me The old belief that we can wish upon a star and that wish be fulfilled no doubt has to do with a deep knowing of how our Spirit Self can be quickened and called into our lives It seemed this is what had happened to me Listening to a Dream The other synchronous experience that happened during this same time frame involves a friend named Colette not her real name Colette s husband had passed away two months earlier They lived far from me so I met them in person only three times but the contacts

  • Plant Study of Monkshood
deeply indented then they again are less indented nearer the flowers There are a few leaves of three fingers then a single finger before reaching the flowers The flowers also grow singularly alternatively upward along the stem The leaves and flowers extend diagonally upward The large leaves are 4 to 5 inches across while the single fingered leaves are 1 to 2 inches long The flower is deep blue or blue purple Inside its deep inner sanctuary there is white and I see rays of white and purple in the petals going deep and rising up The hood of the flowers is like 2 petals fused and appear separate or perhaps it is one folded into its hood shape There are two other larger petals and two narrow lower ones on either side Inside the protective petals I see many little green stamens with yellow tip anthers Monkshood grows in a moist environment The plants I observed were growing by the flowing waters of an alpine creek The grounds are lush and light filled The similarly blue violet delphinium shares this creek side part of the alpine meadow Tall aspens are nearby but not too dense as to block the light From later study I read that what I thought were petals are actually five sepals resembling petals There are two petals concealed under the hood and three others that generally do not develop Audubon Field Guide to Wildflowers The hood is one arched sepal The leaves are described as palmately lobed and jaggedly toothed Imaginative perception of the Monkshood Flower I am drawn into your holy sanctuary Purple blue outer color white within Deep inner sanctum Rays of white and purple going deep and rising up My fingers pulse holding a blossom I hear the running waters After awhile
