    benefits at ever reducing cost The greatest cost value innovations and most daring advances have been achieved by new learning enterprises emerging competitors and enterprises willing to write new rules Many of these innovators are in burgeoning international markets Some are spin offs of existing educational leaders Others are fresh ventures well suited to a new era of knowledge workers in a global economy And some are grassroots ventures at existing institutions Even more transformative partnerships yet to come will radically shift the price value equation The educational world is awash in innovation Unfortunately many innovations are squandered because they fail to scale or do not deliver more value at less cost Many educators have great ideas and foster innovation with a lower case i This is like a thousand points of light if you will But the real payoff is in innovations that truly capture the imagination of practitioners are scalable and engage the energies of entire enterprises or even nations and societies The real ideal is innovation that rewrites the rules of competition satisfies new or unfulfilled value propositions and or enables reductions in cost and price Those innovations are desirable affordable and sustainable This is innovation with a capital I These are the innovations that really matter and that will be the gold standard globally What are some examples of transformative innovations that matter Consider the following real innovations that are emerging today For profit education that is competency based flexible adult oriented and can charge a premium price for the value provided to today s customers In future these price points can be driven down to interest the mass market of early and late majority adopters Institution wide efforts to leverage technology and learning redesign to reduce costs and enhance learning outcomes Richly textured transcripts and
