    patch work on the pillar While the work went on we had the first morning session where we discussed Mahatma Gandhi s Hind Swaraj or Indian Home Rule Participants did not seem to have read it So it was only three people talking Karma Yeshi la Sethu Das and myself The second and the last session was used to watch and discuss two films A Season Outside by Amar Kanwar and Hortsang Jigme la s talk on Return To Tibet To Resolve The Issue the third Heart Of The Matter discussion organised by the Friends of Tibet INDIA in Dharamsala recently And it was time for the inauguration of the Martyr Pillar More than 400 local Tibetans gathered near the pillar And it was inaugurated by Lhakpa Tsering la the Tezu settlement officer by lighting a lamp in the traditional way TT Karma Choephel la spoke on the significance of the pillar and the idea behind and Karma Yeshi la thanked the local Tibetans and participants of the workshop for initiating the work and making the pillar a reality in Tezu Tibetan settlement And sang the national anthem and the uprising song Listening to Karma Yeshi la We left the

    monks from the Gyuato Tantric University as trainees and they were told that the physical training is not compulsory There were many girls too From the next day we would go for jogging The inauguration was held at the community hall next to the settlement office at 9am Tenzin Gang settlement officer Tamdin la welcomed the trainors and Karma Yeshi la introduced the workshop theme and the trainers Karma Choephel la on Mapping The Tibetan Freedom Struggle The session started with TT Karma Choephel la s talk on Mapping The Tibetan Freedom Struggle followed by a question and answer session Reading materials were distributed Workshop Theme Hind Swaraj or Indian Home Rule by Mahatma Gandhi Rangzen Band National Anthem and Uprising Song and Dr Gene Sharp s 198 Methods of Non Violent Protests Persuation Each material was introduced to the trainees Afternoon session was used for discussing Individual s Role In The Freedom Struggle We shifted from the hall to a tent outside The session got over soon and we started working on the Martyr Pillar A small group of girls went for collecting sand and bricks from the compound It was from the participant s suggestion that we changed

    the workshop Their dialect was different and they were participating in a workshop for the first time The first session was a talk by Karma Yeshi la and the topic was Activism In Exile During the talk the mason had come and he was asked to look for an iron bar for the pillar skeleton and some wooden planks After tea all of us started working for the Martyr Pillar Some worked on the base while some went for collecting sand pebble and cement By lunch the base of the pillar should be ready Weather is bad it was driizzling and we need more time for the cement to dry before colouring it After lunch session was used to explain Drama As A Means Of Expression Two groups were formed and they started working on the script Work Session began after tea A good amount of sand and pebble was collected mixed and later filled inside the wooden frame Within minutes the pillar was ready to stand its own and the ground was cleared There are some changes in today s schedule as the Work Session went beyond 5 30pm So the idea was left behind for the next day

    After the tea session there was a talk by TT Karma Choephel la He spoke on the present state of Tibetan freedom struggle and a clarification based on the talk by Sethu Das He said it is not true that the Tibetan freedom movement is hijacked by the sponsors and millionaires Then there was a discussion based on the film A Force More Powerful The film seems to have worked with the participants as they came out with many different strategies and methods to continue their struggle Many praised the way the people of Denmark non violently resisted the German invasion of their country in 1940 In the afternoon Group A and B presented their dramas which was attended by the settlement officer and many other officials and workers from the nearby hand made paper factory Group A presented a drama for 30 minutes where at the end of the drama Tibet becomes an independent country The Chinese flag was lowered and the Tibetan anthem was sung the flag was hoisted Group B s drama was based on the 17 Point Agreement For many specially the monks from the Gyuato Tantric University were acting for the first time Many were

    Later we worked to clean the vicinity of the Martyr Pillar The Martyr Pillar is almost ready The pillar was painted red today And the paint was mixed with some drops of blood every participant and trainer donated Mason Jampa la came down to help paste the marble plate over the pillar Its time to colour the pillar with red oxide The pillar is almost ready now The yellow paint we ordered some days ago should reach here at any time One needs to travel atleast 5 6 hours by road to reach the nearest city in Assam Today s morning session talk is by Tenzin Tsedup la The topic was Freedom Struggle Inside Tibet and he spoke on various issues including his experiences in the prison in Tibet And there were many discussions on violence and non violence and what people in exile can do for the six million inside Discussion went on for hours Lunch time was shortened by 30 minutes and was allotted to discuss Mahatma Gandhi s Hind Swaraj or Indian Home Rule Many had just started reading the book Hind Swaraj was distributed in Tibetan English and Hindi Three of us spoke on the significance

    to an end at the Tenzin Gang Tibtean settlement This is also the conclusion ceremony Inauguration by the settlement officer Tamdin la By 10 am all the workshop participants trainers settlement officer and more than 200 monks from the Gyuato Tantrik University assembled in front of the pillar We all sang the Tibetan National Anthem and the Upsring Song Tamdin la the Tenzin Gang settlement officer inaugurated the Martyr Pillar in the traditional way of lighting a lamp Monks did a ceremonial puja TT Karma Choephel la and Karma Yeshi la addressed the gathering People offered Khatas at the pillar and observed a symbolic two minute silence for the memory of all those who gave their life for Tibet For many it was more than a pillar And it was time for us to leave the Tenzin Gang settlement On the way we are planning to stop at Bomdila to address a gathering of local Tibetans For many it was more than a pillar We left the settlement the next day morning Many participants and the villagers had some to say good bye and good wishes We continued our journey to Tenzin Gang the last Tibetan settlement in Arunachal Pradesh

    9am Chief guest for the inaugural function was Rev Chogyal Tenzin la Member ATPD He reached at 8 30am and worked with us and started waiting for the participants to arrive Time dragged on Regional Tibetan Youth Congress members heads of various NGOs also arrived on time for the inauguration Finally with 12 participants the inaugural talk started at 10am Karma Yeshi la spoke on the workshop and broke down while talking about the need of public support and the initiatives in the Tibetan freedom struggle Karma la secretary of the Darjeeling Tibetan Welfare Office welcomed the workshop team to Darjeeling Rev Chogyal Tenzin la spoke next He spoke on the importance of such workshops further analysis and action for Tibet even after the workshop His talk was the formal inauguration for the workshop First session began with Karma Yeshi la on Mapping the Tibetan Freedom Struggle followed by a question and answer session After lunch was for the in depth understanding of each participants a usual technique of pairing two participants talking to each other and introducing each other to the floor At 2pm we screened the film Gandhi by Richard Attenborough and at least 50 school children from
