    the Friends of Tibet INDIA Welfare officer welcomed the workshop team to Gangtok and thanked us on the behalf of the people of Gangtok Inauguration by the Settlement Officer Since there were many non participants in the crowd only the names were said in the Introduction Section Out of 60 people gathered at the Community Hall 20 people registered for the workshop Before the tea session reading materials were distributed Karma Yeshi la gave the first talk the first talk on Mapping the Tibetan Freedom Struggle followed by a question and answer session Lunch happened at 12 30pm and the post lunch session was dedicated to reading and other free materials were distributed I gave a brief introduction to the Rangzen Band 198 Methods of Non Violent Protests and Persuasion by Dr Gene Sharp Mahatma Gandhi s Hind Swaraj or Indian Home Rule to create an interest to the book From 2pm we discussed the coming four days of the workshop So agreed to do the Martyr Pillar but after seeking permission from the local Indian authorities of Gangtok The film Gandhi Dir Sir Richard Attenborough could not be screened as the workshop had to be dismissed by 3 30pm

    Tsedup s talk on Freedom Struggle Inside Tibet ended up with the argument on independence and middle way approach The discussion was followed by a debate After tea there was a talk by Karma Yeshi la on the Structure of the Exile Government It seemed to be very informative as every one had something to ask The afternoon session Drama As A Means of Expression got heated up into discussing what drama can we play Two groups were formed each having about 15 people Perhaps this has been the largest team we ever had and all of them taking part in the making of the drama Karma Yeshi la cited examples of successful plays enacted in different Tibetan camps where the audience reacted very strangely cases of people fainting seeing Tibetan being tortured by the Chinese on the stage I gave technical aspects of the drama the new and created world In the second session of the workshop in the afternoon the film A Force More Powerful A Century Of Non Violent Conflict Dir Steve York was screened only the first two parts Screening of A Force More Powerful DAY 1 DAY 2 DAY 3 DAY 4 DAY 5 List

    well organised Group A s drama was called Semgyur or Change In The Mind It was the story of a Tibetan family where the two brothers constantly fight and criticize each other The elder Choephel real name is a business minded person thinking only of making money for the family while he hates his brother always working hard for the freedom struggle which Choephel feels is pointless and leads nowhere Choephel happens to see a hunger strike in Delhi also the self immolation of Thupten Ngodup la This changes his life entirely and apologises for his mistakes He then starts supporting his brother s activities for Tibet Group B s drama was short It was had only one scene one location drama It was based on the workshop and a dialogue between two brothers one supporting the Holiness stand on Tibet and the other supporting Tibet s independence Dramas were followed by a very interesting discussion based on the film A Force More Powerful A Century of Non Violent Conflict I briefly ran through the different movements and observed the use of pamphlets newsletters to reach to the public Also the economic war people waged against the ruling power there

    freedom struggle which defined India as a nation By 1 30pm the crowd had grown to quite a huge size and the public talk begun with Thupten Wangyal la Tsewang la s talk to the public was very encouraging She became emotional while talking about those who died for Tibet but continues the talk I could hear many people crying sitting behind me Six trainees from the workshop spoke on various issues ranging from the importance of patriotism to Rangzen Band The session ended up with the drama presentation by Group A Karma Yeshi la Tenzin Tsedup la and myself spoke briefly At the end of the workshop Jimpa Phuntsok la the president of the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress announced that Tashi Dawa la is donating Rs 15 000 towards the workshop process He gave the money and wished the workshop team all the success and requested each one of us to continue the process Then there was a flow of participants and other individuals to donate money for the completion and continuation of the workshop in other settlements in India After tea concluding ceremony was held at 5pm Tibetan Welfare Officer spoke at the end He congratulated the workshop
