also feature Oculus s enhanced VR audio headphones which are optimized for comfort and immersiveness The headphones are detachable and you can swap them out to plug in your own if you d like Other peripherals include a wireless Xbox One controller which Oculus announced would ship with the headset upon release While Facebook may have bought Oculus for 2 billion it looks like Microsoft may have a quite prominent role in the launch as well At launch the Rift will be able to play games streamed from a user s Xbox One console though not in the cool way we imagine the experience will be more akin to playing a regular video game while sitting in a virtual movie theater In order to take full advantage of the Rift s 3 D features games will have to be developed from the ground up for virtual reality For now VR software seems to remain in the domain of PC gamers Microsoft s late July release of Windows 10 should also be a boon to virtual reality as it will contain the first steps toward official VR hardware support Prior to this the Oculus Rift worked as a glorified external monitor with a USB connection that fed tracking information back to the computer In Windows 10 the Rift and possibly other headsets will be recognized as stand alone peripherals allowing for a more simplified consumer friendly user experience that has eluded the device thus far The downside to this is that Oculus is for the time being dropping support for the Mac and Linux platforms While unfortunate this may be a necessary cut in the short term Oculus s Mac and Linux support was considered half baked in previous releases to begin with Oculus is also working on their own set
