  • Future of Storytelling | Future Library Project
artist Katie Paterson s Future Library Project Every year for the next century one author will be invited to donate a short story an essay or a novel to a literary time capsule In the year 2114 the books will finally be available to read long after the lifetimes of most of the authors and the artist Many of the authors who will participate in this project haven t even been born yet Paterson began her work with the Future Library Project by planting a forest of 1 000 trees just outside of Oslo Norway She also secured a special room in the Diechmanske public library which will display the names of the authors and the titles of their works but won t have any of the manuscripts available to read for the next 100 years Paterson told the Guardian For some writers I think it could be an incredible freedom they can write whatever they like We re just asking that it be on the theme of imagination and time which they can take in so many directions I think it s important that the writing reflects maybe something of this moment in time so when future readers open the book they will have some kind of reflection of how we were living in this moment After 100 years have passed the forest of 1 000 trees will be cut down and used to make the paper to print the stories The resulting body of work will contain words that are 100 to only 1 year old creating a timeline of what authors throughout the century have thought fit to say to future readers Atwood s lips are sealed about what she wrote for the project and she claims that she won t miss reading the reviews for her

  • Future of Storytelling | Windows 10 for Raspberry Pi 2
maker communities a diverse cross section of hardcore technophiles weekend warriors and curious tinkerers It s a portion of the tech industry driven almost entirely by passion but that s not to say the seeds for radical new technologies can t emerge from its hordes of enthusiasts At the center of the maker and DIY communities are low barrier to entry connected devices like the Raspberry Pi a computer board that costs just 35 It s latest iteration the Raspberry Pi 2 has four times the processing power of its predecessor and will feature a more robust option to run a version of the Windows 10 operating system It s an expansion of the Windows Developer Program for the so called Internet of Things and a clear sign that Microsoft would like to strengthen its ties with the maker community It s a long shot that the next game changer like the HoloLens will grow out of a 35 computer board but Kevin Dallas General Manager of the Microsoft Internet of Things Group summed it up best writing on the Microsoft blog We see the Maker community as an amazing source of innovation for smart connected devices that represent the

  • Future of Storytelling | Zac’s Haunted House
Zac s Haunted House By Luisa Lizoain on February 9 2015 Share Believe it or not the GIF format has applications beyond punctuating BuzzFeed listicles and communicating government messages including storytelling Author Dennis Cooper has pushed the form to its limit with his visual novel which is told using only GIFs Zac s Haunted House is an eerie and thought provoking exploration of how GIFs of all types can be combined to create a complete story According to the novel s publisher Kiddiepunk Instead of gathering materials from language sentences and the developmental character and narrative possibilities allowed and restricted by written fiction Cooper has turned his characteristic inventiveness on the animated gif employing gifs tightly wound looping visual possibilities nervous rhythms tiny storylines and their status as dismembered twitching eye candy to compose a short novel of unexpected complexity strangeness poetry and comedy The visual format forces readers to puzzle through the meaning of the sequences of looping animations The flow of GIFs and particularly the visual continuity from one GIF to the next help readers understand the significance of a passage As an example here s an excerpt from Chapter One Our verdict Check out Zac s Haunted
