  • Future of Storytelling | Mayday! Deep Space
of the ship s radar systems and flight information you must guide the survivor safely past enemies environmental hazards and moral quandaries in order to complete the game However unlike other games where the player is meant to embody the main character or at least control all of their decisions Mayday makes it clear that you are guiding the survivor to safety not controlling him as if an omnipotent god Your relative lack of control over the character has been compared to riding a horse You can steer a horse in the right direction but you can t make it run off a cliff Similarly the survivor has a sense of self preservation and will for example disobey and ignore your commands if you too obviously try to lead him to his death However frequent deaths are not a concern in Mayday Deep Space as the game is mostly meant to be a vehicle for the story not a tough challenge in its own right The story of Mayday Deep Space is written by Daniel Wilson roboticist and New York Times best selling author of novels including Robopocalypse and Ro bogenesis The inspiration behind Mayday came from the popular science fiction trope in which characters stuck in hostile territory are guided to safety by a voice on the other end of a walkie talkie This plot device has been used in movies from Jurassic Park to Aliens which Wilson named as a primary influence behind the project Wilson believes that the act of speaking out loud to someone creates a more intimate experience and in combination with the survivor s artificial intelligence and imitation of human characteristics can make for a more emotional connection than gamers are used to Osric Chau best known as Kevin Tran in the TV series

packages reaching into the millions Amazon even followed up its purchase of Twitch by acquiring Goodgames an advertising agency that specializes in monetizing live and streamed events through sponsorships and merchandising The infrastructure developing around E Sports is starting to resemble more traditional recreational pastimes by the day Few if any of the popular E Sport titles feature much in the way of narrative structure Call of Duty League of Legends Dota 2 Starcraft Each favors an onslaught of action over carefully constructed storytelling However narrative is starting to creep into the wild world of E Sports in at least one regard With so many superstars villains jokers rivalries and cash up for grabs there s bound to be some drama that further promotes the games and stars pushing them to new heights of popularity Much like the YouTube Vine and Snapchat stars that dominated much of the conversation in 2014 E Sport celebrities are the people s champs of the new year Nadeshot for example was aptly credited by the New York Times as the director producer and star of his own reality show reaching out to fans directly through social media promoting his overall brand and driving eyeballs towards his streaming channel MLG TV for which he is paid per view The reduced barrier to entry and overall democratization of game distribution and development has allowed indie games to flourish as 2014 FoST speaker Chris Charla illuminated It s unlikely that games featuring this dual structure will take off within the E Sporting realm anytime soon but the narratives and story lines concocted by fans advertisers agencies and the like will only become more varied as E Sports continues to take off The reality show currently in production from Nadeshot and others could easily morph into fictionalized accounts
