    a field trip this past Friday to see Drawn Out Storytelling a live show combining personal narrative with comic book visuals and music Nisse Greenberg the maestro behind Drawn Out kicked things off with a video intro before settling into emcee duties for the rest of the well curated lineup As one part of the Gotham Storytelling Festival presented by FRIGID New York Horse Trade Drawn Out left us blown away by the caliber of its storytellers Steve Zimmer Brad Lawrence Ophira Eisenberg and Erin Barker were equally adept at comedy and drama laying bare their emotions to a room full of strangers There was just enough weird sprinkled in visualize a man lizard slithering toward a dominatrix that we remained on high alert It s always refreshing to hear a sampling of well told stories and the tales recounted of high school bullies Haitian witch doctors a car crash in a nature preserve and a pencil case theft were wonderfully eclectic We d encourage you to keep your eyes peeled for any upcoming Drawn Out Storytelling events or any other show curated by Nisse His commitment to the storytelling craft is infectious and as demonstrated by the graphic recording

    2014 Share Since the unveiling of the Samsung GearVR the company s smartphone based head mounted display HMD industry creatives have been jumping at the chance to adapt their interactive works for the new virtual reality platform Latest in this experimental wave is the underwater exploration game Ocean Rift created by indie developer and Bangor University Lecturer Dr Llyr ap Cenydd Although scheduled to launch on the Oculus Rift the game s first version is now being presented for Samsung s device Ocean Rift is a virtual deep sea expedition where users encounter a wide variety of aquatic creatures from playful dolphins to outlandish prehistoric species The experience is enhanced not just by a plethora of ocean flora and fauna but also underwater effects like bubbles and water currents What began as an experiment in underwater reality for VR headsets has quickly expanded into an intriguing interactive breakthrough in the ability of digital storytellers to create intensely lifelike underwater locations with reactive animations for their VR games and experiences The project has so far relied on donations and Kickstarter for development It won t be completed for the Oculus Rift until sometime next year but in the meantime you can

    San Francisco based studio Jamwix Premiering in traditional 2D formats back in 2013 Banshee has been criticized for failing to utilize the full 360 degree view a result of it being retrofitted for the new format The criticisms definitely feel overblown as Jamwix went so far as to develop a custom software enabling the film s release with 120 degrees of viewing potential If anything it should be celebrated as a worthy experimentation on what is still a relatively new platform Jamwix CEO Blair Erickson who also wrote and directed Banshee has even made it available for free download via Oculus s developer site The trailer offers some insight into the hurdles the Banshee team faced when conceptualizing and executing the feature so we d encourage you to take a peek at that and then head over to the Jamwix site to a learn a little more about Banshee and the Jamwix team The second recent release is Zero Point a documentary examining the emergence and future prospects of VR Produced by Condition One a visual technology startup specializing in experiential storytelling the doc explores the immersive capabilities of the headset with an eye toward future applications It also happens

  • Future of Storytelling | Spacey Stars in Advanced Warfare
    technique in the industry called Performance Capture It starts with the actors donning a black jumpsuit and affixing special markers to their face Dozens of tiny cameras then capture them from every angle as they talk run jump and climb their way through fictional environments However whereas previous games utilized the motion capture aspect for action sequences and then dubbed over the audio with lines from voice actors Advanced Warfare takes a different approach In a performance capture environment actors record scenes as they would for a movie responsible for both the dialog and the action According to Sledgehammer Games executive Michael Condrey this more wholistic approach eliminates the disconnect that comes from separating these two elements which can result in creepy and off putting characters Because of these differences as well as the exceedingly high cost of Hollywood talent many studios turn to an entirely different breed of actors for video games One particularly prolific example is Troy Baker known for playing as Joel in The Last of Us and both the Joker and Batman in the Arkham series In previous entries of the series he says performances were recorded in isolation and he might not have known who his costars were until he opened up the game Even during the production of Advanced Warfare Spacey s colleagues were not informed about his role until he showed up at the studio to their surprise Additionally in most cases actors do not get to see scripts in advance Not all Hollywood actors can thrive under these circumstances Kevin Spacey however is no stranger to entering new and uncharted territory In 2003 Spacey announced his leave from Hollywood to become the artistic director for London s Old Vic theater company In 2013 he jumped on board for streaming behemoth Netflix s
