  • Future of Storytelling | Priya’s Shakti
    push the victims of sexual violence into the shadows The comic s plot centers on Priya a fictionalized victim of a brutal sexual attack but the story also incorporates popular Hindu myths and figures such as the Goddess Parvati in addition to the real life stories of sexual assault survivors in India Inspiration for the comic comes in part from a popular 1970 s comic book series created by Amar Chitra Katha that featured tales of the Hindu gods Coupling the mythical stories with AR enabled real life stories and the tale of Priya makes for a complex layered story structure A free app available upon the comic s release in December 2014 will help peel back some of the layers An upcoming four day workshop for teenagers in Mumbai on September 10 13 at the Colour Box a space run by the Society for Nutrition Education and Health Action SNEHA illuminates the comic s potential as one tool in a much larger dialogue The workshop will allow teenagers to make their own comics while also encouraging them to talk through many of the issues raised in the book The comics produced in the workshop will then be made into

    viewed alongside art Where do you draw the line between art and design Its about damn time Video games Even those who were happy about the announcement wondered how the institution could whittle down its selection to just a few notable titles And above all else a fundamental question remained how can a game s significance be conveyed without spending the necessary time playing it Paul Galloway the study center supervisor at the MoMA s Department of Architecture and Design addressed this vexing question in a recent interview with Polygon noting that the cinematic trailers utilized by the museum in the past have been a solid start but there is ample room for improvement To make matters more difficult s ome games pose unique challenges on top of those inherent to the medium Dwarf Fortress the single player fantasy game funded entirely through donations is a prime example Lead developer Tarn Adams has said in the past that it won t be complete for well over another decade with updates released intermittently For an institution like the MoMA that holds itself to an incredibly high standard as interpreter educator archivist safe house a game subject to change is a headache with little precedent The Polygon piece also revealed the unique solution that the MoMa came up with a script devised by the media conservator that automatically downloads updates as they are released While it s a strictly technical solution it points towards the institution s commitment to blazing trails in the digital realm while upholding its duties to preserve the game in its most accurate and up to date form Where the MoMA has been less successful is succinctly placing certain games within the grander trajectory of art and design works from the past few decades an all hands on
