    Issues The Academy of Aging project has now concluded We thank our funder our many partners and all of the participants for making this a great success The Academy of Aging educated and equipped seniors to approach their retirement years with confidence While the number of vulnerable seniors is increasing the provision of adequate services is not In a holistic manner the seminars catered to a segment of the population that has perpetually been neglected The Academy of Aging seminar series explored topics such as health and wellness financial planning emergency preparedness and other topics that matter to you The seminars allowed uniquely abled seniors to gain practical life skills Additionally the seminars educated older adults on aging successfully and various different aging related issues This also helped alleviate isolation by providing seniors an opportunity to meet others from their community Looking at current programs and initiatives funded for seniors in our community the availability of services is lagging The seminars provided up to date information and facilitated discussion on significant issues and challenges that face this segment of the population It created awareness and identified feasible remedies The seminars expanded the understanding of the needs and concerns of the senior population of the North Shore and suggested future initiatives for social planning The seminars promoted various aspects of health to create a healthy whole person This project was funded by Government of Canada s New Horizons for Seniors Program To learn more about how to join or for more information please contact the managers of this unique project Jeff Battle Project Coordinator 604 685 2267 jbattle gociss org Jim Jo Program Manager Where to find us Port Coquitlam Office 2175 Mary Hill Road Port Coquitlam BC V3C 3A2 Ph 604 461 2131 Fax 778 285 5520 North Vancouver Office

  • Kyle Kitchen | CISSCISS
    Port Moody Kyle Kitchen is a skill development work experience program which helps individuals build on their food preparation skills Many individuals in the program have gone on to paid employment at a variety of jobs and businesses The program is designed to provide local seniors a place to socialize with other seniors in their community The individuals working at Kyle Kitchen serve seniors an affordable lunch which consists of homemade soup sandwiches and dessert Kyle Kitchen sponsors employment development community partnerships and relationship building Menus are created shopping lists made weekly shopping trips done which include laundry services and a cleanup crew This project provides 12 individuals with volunteer positions learning applicable life and employment skills The program is run two days per week on Mondays preparing the lunch and Tuesdays serving it The duties required are preparing soup stock and making dessert all from scratch While the crew is at the kitchen preparing lunch for Tuesday a team of two is busy shopping for those weeks groceries On Tuesday the team arrives first thing in the morning to finish making the hearty soup preparing tasty sandwiches and adding a dessert for the sweet tooth Lunch is served at 11 30 sharp every Tuesday The seniors line up creating an opportunity for the individuals we support to learn how to take an order handle money and social skills Once lunch is finished another crew arrives to do clean up You can eat at Kyle Kitchen every Tuesday at 11 30 AM View Larger Map Kyle Kitchen at Port Moody 125 Kyle Street Port Moody BC Phone 604 461 2131 Email kylekitchen gociss org Where to find us Port Coquitlam Office 2175 Mary Hill Road Port Coquitlam BC V3C 3A2 Ph 604 461 2131 Fax 778 285 5520 North Vancouver

    Dan Dan is a very important volunteer at CISS s weekly Coffee House Every Thursday Dan and a fellow volunteer sell admission tickets to our customers which he enjoys by greeting the regular customers each week Dan has a paid position for Coffeehouse making bank deposits from the previous day s event Dan likes dressing in his best business attire for his job and takes his work very seriously He usually arrives at CISS and stays for a short while has a cup of coffee with his Program Manager and then is all business when it s time for his banking duties His confidence and pride in a job well done has been a huge step in his independent living skills We appreciate and rely on Dan to make the banking transactions that are necessary to keep things running smoothly at the Coffeehouse Visit Java with Friends Coffee House Brian and Michael Brian has been employed at McDonalds since November 2009 and Michael since February 2012 They both work a one and a half hour shift one day per week Their main responsibility is to bus tables ensuring that customers always have a clean place to eat Their other duties include cleaning the food trays keeping the condiment counter fully stocked sweeping and mopping the floors monitoring the garbage receptacles and checking to make sure the washrooms are clean Both Brian and Mike enjoy their job and take pride in doing the work to the best of their abilities Manager John Puflett says Having Brian and Mike be a part of the McDonald s team is a win win situation While it gives them an opportunity to be contributing members of society it also allows McDonald s a chance to give back to the community Nice to meet you I m Krista Krista started her paid position at the I Party With More dollar store in September 2008 Krista organizes and stocks shelves does returns and cleans the store One of Krista s favourite duties is directing customers to the object they are looking for Krista s co workers count on her to return items to the proper location in a store that has thousands of items Way to go Krista Hudson and Lee Hudson and Lee have been working at Boston Pizza since July 8 2011 for two hours once per week Duties include unboxing and weighing chicken and other meats Hudson and Lee work independently at their position supporting each other through any obstacles Congratulations Hi My name s Scott Scott brings tremendous energy and a contagious smile in fact he is known to bring a smile to all those he comes across Scott has a history of participating in many sporting activities and is currently taking part in a swimming program with CISS He maintains an active lifestyle and is heavily involved in the community Scott often volunteers his time at Maplewood farms ensuring that all the animals are well fed As well Scott enjoys his time
